I had not considered 3 and I am not sure if it is in the budget (I'm at a state college). But if I went for 3 I'd definitely have to find an alternative to the Thunderbolt displays.

Anyone have good experience with $500ish displays?

They are okay for this kind of use.

Here's an Eizo office monitor for $500ish. It's a 6 bit IPS type, but a lot of them are in that price range. Their dithering algorithms are actually quite good.

The NEC 23" might not be quite as good as their 24" of similar type, but it includes some of the features to improve uniformity that you find on the higher ones. In cart B+H charges $498. You can find the old model directly for $450 closeout. They have some of the standard office NEC displays for less. Those vary a bit. They aren't always flawless, but they are actually more consistent than Apple imo. It's also a brand that is largely focused on displays. A U2412m wouldn't be a bad buy. I think it's another 6 bit type. I'm partial to Eizo as I've had good results from them using the CG displays.

Apple displays typically aren't the best value. If you do decide to go with Apple displays though, get them in the same order. That way you can apply applecare to both through the purchase of the mac pro. Most other displays have longer warranties. NEC has a 48 hour replacement. They and Eizo are known more for professional displays, but they make ones intended for office use as well.

Can you guys post a picture of your setup of 27in ATD with 24 or 22in on the side (horizontally)? Im planning to have this setup. Thanks

One 27" in the middle, flanked by two 22" rotated 90 degree.

That sounds good...

For the OP, it really depends on the apps you are running, and how you want to arrange them.

For apps like PS and LR that go full screen, dual 24"s can be a good choice, but if you are doing other sorts of stuff, the 27" in the middle might be better.

Comp your apps the way you would really like to arrange them in some sort of layout program, and that might answer your question...
