Get DC 2 GHz. For what you're doing its more than enough. Man, even single-core/processor machine is enough for your needs.

You said that you will not do any special effects in Motion which havily uses the graphics card, so GeForce 6600 LE is fine. Even if you get 7800 there will be no performance increase in DV editing/rendering/encoding.

Get 2 GB of RAM, a second HD for render/footage and u're loaded

correct, however he will be able to play poorly encoded, mac-soft games runing in open GL, on a direct X9 emulator at playable frame rates.

P.S: with the Quad he might repeat might be able to have itunes and random program 'X' open at the same time and suffer no performace loss on program 'X'
