Currently the MBP are using the Ati x1600 and the only thing they could upgrade is to the x1800 which would be a nice bump, enough to upgrade my g4 finally if they do it. Due to Nvidia being an ass when it comes to working with intel chipsets I only see ATI upgrades in the near future.

Chip Memory Pixel shader/vertex shader core speed
x1600 128bit 4 channel 12/5 400MHz
x1800 256bit 8 channel 12/8 450Mhz
x1800 xt 256bit 8 channel 16/8 550Mhz
7900gs 256bit 20/7 375Mhz

Best hope would be for an underclocked x1800 xt but even a x1800 would be an improvement. The only NVidia part that is likely is the 7900 gs not the faster gtx model also not the 7800.
The 7900gs uses only 20watts vs 40+ for the 7800/7900 gtx.

Personlly the best would be a 7900gs for games. Less power and quicker at games but even a x1800 would be an improvement.

X10 parts are a long ways away considering the extreme cooling needed for the desktop models.

nVidia being an ass with Intel chipsets? WTF? That's pretty much nVidia's only market for chipsets since the AMD/ATI merger.

When it will be useful in an Mac OSX environment. That is, quite frankly, not going to happen anytime soon as the only available DirectX 10 chip is a power hog.

Apple doesn't use MXM on the portables...there's no room for a removable GPU card. Apple doesn't even use socketed CPUs for the same reason.

Apple doesn't use socketed CPUs to prevent people from upgrading, remember those days when Apple used to solder memory modules on the PB 12"? If Apple has a monopoly instead of Microsoft we'd all be buying PCs where even the graphics cards are socketed in.

A soldered CPU shaves a few more millimeters of height off. MXM doesn't show up in anything less then the 17" or larger monsters.

The actual reason they do not use sockets are because of the form factor.

Remember that the MacBook Pro is 1 inch thick. By soldering the processor and memory (it isn't anymore I know) directly on the PCB, you save space.
