My late model PowerMac G5 is far more powerful than the original Mac Mini X86 and probably still more powerful than the original MacBook.

Who's computer is more dead?

This is hilarious! You're comparing a $3,000 workstation to an old generation $500 small-form-factor Intel system.. If that doesn't close the case for PPC viability, I don't know what does! :D

Get used to it, you're going to see less and less hardware & software offering PPC support as time goes on. That's what normally happens to legacy technology.

I am happy that Apple steps up to the plate for their customers and gets software out there so we don't have to be slave to these 3rd party companies that want to leave the Mac community in the cold.
If they (3rd party companies) plan on making the software, make it now. What's the point of making it later? Lower market share should have nothing to do with it. If that were the case then there's no point in making it at all.

Again, if some of you feel the need to defend the fact that some companies are slow at making Mac versions of their software then maybe some of you are working for these companies.

As users of OS X we can hope all we want that 3rd party software is released at the same time as the Windows version, but the fact of the matter is companies will always cater to the larger market share. I would imagine that a significant amount of resources are necessary to develop programs that run as efficiently on OS X as they do on Windows and there are numerous cases where this development simply cannot be done simulatenously.

I don't think it is a coincidence that there has been a drastic change in safari's UI right after Chrome broke through with it's innovative design. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple is working on each tab being a seperate process either, albeit it was MS who started that first with IE8 beta.

Chrome isn't pure innovation either. Google copied a lot from other browsers as well. When a feature is good, why not support it? In the end you can choose a browser that fits. :)

I don't like the clunky style of Chrome, especially the menu bar. At least Safari has the same look of all other applications. I'll stick with Safari, as I don't expect Chrome to be faster. :D

Install 'Chrome' on my system!? When they pry Firefox out of my cold dead hand! ;)

As a designer/developer I love the addons that are available with Firefox. I've tried this (Chrome) on Windows however and failed to see what all the fuss was about.

I shall pass.

Not the prettiest browser in its current form, I must say...

Prediction:

Like most of Google's latest Mac offerings, there is no PowerPC version meaning Safari and Firefox will for a long LONG time have better marketshare and Chromium will be DOA and ignored by most Mac users as a result.
Only PC switchers will consider it.

I fear the same fate awaits Snow Leopard, the Leopard that PowerPC users expected, ya know, the one that's optimized and fixed. HAha!

I was wondering why the Camino project seems to have stalled.
Thanks Google... NOT!

You are aware that the newest PPC Mac is now over 3 years old and using Adium as a benchmark (since they actually put out their stats) is as of today at THIRTEEN (13) per cent. Source: http://adium.im/sparkle/

PPC is dead whether we like it or not. (I have several PPC machines that still work fine but going forward their days are numbered).

Oh and an edit for those who want to be on the bleeding edge and expect to bleed I put together a script that will update Chromium for you. (Quit Chromium, run the script, open it back up).

My god, it FLIES. Launches near instantaneously and makes both Safari 4 and Camino (my usual weapons of choice) look very sluggish indeed at loading and rendering pages.

Hate the HUGE text in the address and don't like the visual style at all (I don't use tabs, I open new windows for each page, and don't understand why anyone ever would use tabs on an OS that has Expose). The moment they have Flash up and running I'll switch in a heartbeat. Have been getting increasingly irritated with the spinning beachball on Safari.

Damn you guys need to loosen up a bit and stop drinking so much Apple kool-aid. [...]

They're drinking something down, for sure. Maybe some folks here need to wipe their chin before they carry.

It's no wonder Apple fans get such a bad rep when people just brush aside Apple's rather blatant copying - yet are quick to jump on anyone doing anything similar to Apple. Complaining that the UI isn't completely done? It's not even "officially" available for testing yet! Jesus.

am i being really dim, but when i try to run chromium it doesn't work.

i have downloaded the latest build and when i double click it nothing happens.

i am running Tiger on an intel macbook.

Agree with lots of comments here.

Toolbar is too big, menu text is huuuuuge and looks relatively unpolished. BUT, this is a beta. I doubt they really took lots of time to work the aesthetics for it. I'm sure it'll come out looking golden. Can't wait!

For the record, I use Chrome on Windows at work and love it.

I'm not a big fan of Chromium or Safari 4.
Looks like I'm sticking with Firefox

Who's computer is more dead?

They can run Chromium and SL. You can't. I think you just answered your question there. A platform isn't very useful if support for it is dropping.

Chromium, just like Snow Leopard is destined to FLOP!

I'm sure Chromium will flop, being that it's only the development branch of Chrome. Usually development branches don't attain popularity (like minefield, which is the development branch of Firefox), but the stable branches can.

And I doubt SL will flop. As soon as it's released, Leopard will become unsupported and developers will stop developing for Leopard. That's why I won't go back to Tiger, because of lack of support.

Who will pay $129 for BUG FIXES ?!? LMAO

Maybe not you, but I don't think Apple will be disappointed in sales.

Well guess what, PEECEE switchers DO NOT make up the vast majority of Mac users.

Denial? Anyone?

This is from a year ago. Somehow the graph is showing from July 2007 to July 2008 that the green bar keeps shrinking (the PPC bar).

Sorry to inform you of that.

I'm too am sorry that you informed me of your disillusioned opinion.

I wonder if it's possible to compile a PPC (or Universal) build with the current source code?
Any news or rumors on that subject?

Considering they use their own custom javascript engine which is an Intel only just in time compiler or some such I believe, I doubt it.

ot

OK just tried it and guess what it only works for you intel users I guess my architecture is not compatible so clearly my Firefox is superior at least on this old thing LOL

Sorry to be off topic, but how is that Sawtooth upgrade working out for you? I was thinking about upgrading to similar specs on my '99 to tide me over 'till I can grab a new machine.

Google becoming "next Microsoft" by releasing a new browser? How's that exactly?

Nearly all of the browsers out there are based on a few rendering engines - Trident, Gecko, and WebKit being the main three. Both Safari and Chrome are built on WebKit. So the web developers really need to test the compatibility against these main rendering engines, not each browser out there.

More user choices and competition in browser space is good, and it ensures we don't end up with de-facto monopolies, like IE 4 years ago!

It's not just the browser, it's the attempt to literally blanket the market. You've got the Google search engine, Google Maps, Google Docs, Google Street View, Android, Chrome, etc. etc. Before long, Google will probably attempt some Web-based OS. I just don't like one company owning too much real estate in that many markets. It's why I never buy gasoline from Wal-Mart and rarely from Kroger.

You may point out that Apple wears a lot of hats as well, but it's small potatoes. Apple has about 10 percent of the PC market, maybe 20 percent of the smart phone market (which means maybe 1 percent of overall mobile devices), and similar share with Safari. I'm glad Amazon came along and is giving a decent fight to iTunes even though I like iTunes MUCH better. I also don't think that the digital media player market is quite as important as the Web browser and search engine markets.

I realize that chrome had "most visited sites" before "topsites" in safari, but I really think Apples implementation is much more graceful.

I installed chrome last night when redoing my dads dell laptop with XP (the computer is basically breaking down every few months now) so I put chrome on there because it feels like it is much less resource hungry.

Sorry to be off topic, but how is that Sawtooth upgrade working out for you? I was thinking about upgrading to similar specs on my '99.

It works damn good, It runs circles around my fiance's 2.5 gig HD Dell all day the newer tech processor comes with a firmware disk you have to boot into to install first in order to run it because the standard firmware update won't do the trick and you have to set the jumpers on the card to run right with a 100 mz bus(do nothing if you have a 133 bus) first though but once you get past that it runs like a screaming raped ape and seems to take the OS updates very well. I'd like to overclock it just a little it's sooo damn tempting but I'd have to get a liquid cooling system first. I have been an OWC addict now for about 5 years but they don't carry that kind of cooling at a reasonable expense I may have to get off my lazy ass and build one using some of my skills working with plumbing and refrigeration :(
