Does anyone have an educated guess on when they think Apple will start iPad pre orders? Or even if you think they will at all? What is Apple's history on this sort of thing? Pre ordering new products I mean.
Thanks

You can sign up on Apple's website to be notified when you can preorder

well assuming they take preorders, they will when they announce the release date which would be around when the fcc are done with the ipad

I'd say late March for the WiFi and April for the 3G.

Yeah, that's right... When they come out.

I honestly don't really see a point in pre ordering... I only do that with video games, but usually a week before they come out. Plus you usually get free *EDIT: "stuff"*

I remember when the iPhone 3G came out there were sales of boxes only, that's right boxes only of someone who bought a phone, and was selling the box from it and it said that all over the eBay listing and 3 or 4 listings like that still sold for $500.

Note: signing up for the notification on the site usually results in an email being sent to you a few days after you can actually order. This has happened in the past with Apple.

I know people who hang here are going to know the second the link goes live, but for 'normal' people I'd recommend not relying simply on that sign up page.

My uneducated guess is that Apple won't have preorders and will release it in store only so they can have lines for news coverage and promotion purposes. This makes great hype for a new product (like was done withe the original iPhone). Showing the lines the in NY, LA, Dallas, Chicago... make great copy and gets fence sitters jumping and people who have heard of it but unfamiliar want to know more.

I disagree. There will be lines regardless of pre-orders (iPhone 3Gs) and not everyone has an Apple store w/i a convenient driving distance. Pre-orders are the ultimate impluse buy and necessity for more than 50% of the U.S. population that ight want an iPad on Day One. Apple isn't going to lose those sales in such a calculated way.

As for when pre-orders will begin... as others have said, when the FCC says Apple can, probably end of the month, as I imagine it will take another month for Apple to ramp up production to built up enough stock for launch and get them into the supply chain by end of March.

+1. Exactly. No WAY Apple leaves so much Day 1 money on the table by not allowing pre-orders. Remember - a very tiny % of the world's population lives near an Apple store.

I am going to predict either March 1, 2010 at 12:00AM for the Wi-fi versions and April 1, 2010 at 12:00AM for the 3G versions. or

March 30, 2010 and April 30, 2010.:p

That's why they have the email notification thing. They know that as soon as we get our emails, we will be rushing to apple.com to put in our orders.

They want a huge opening for this thing, for the good press and to quiet all the naysayers. The folks who stand in line would be there anyway. They like to be a part of something.
