I own the 2G for the sole purpose of reading books online. It's quite a decent machine for the price ($300). Don't know that I'd fork another 3 bills for a 9" screen. Once Apple releases an affordable micro laptop, I'm all over it.

It all depends on what you want from a machine.

The macbook air is all nice and i admit i was drooling over them in the apple store today, but only the most rabid mac fan would claim it's more than a anorexic macbook.

The eee and other such machine are so much smaller they are in a different market and there is little overlap. You either want a very small machine of you don't. The air is nice and thin but that aint the most inportant dimension in small computers!

Me I want both! i have a 4g eee and love it but it's not for the same purpose as an air would be.

Though a nice compromise I would like is a 10 inch mac, now than would be great!

Don't get me wrong, I would rather have an MBA than an eeePC any day of the week. But, they fit different niches. I have friends who fit their eeePC in their jacket pocket.

One of my best friends did the branding in Australia for this eeePC, I have seen and used them but I feel it's too small, not enough functionality and it feels like a very cheap build.

I really don't this will compete with Apple at all....

I'm close to pulling the trigger on an EEE and will wait until pricing on the new models is announced before deciding to purchase or not.

The current models go for between $300 and $400 which in my opinion almost makes them a disposable laptop.

I intend to purchase one, mostly for use when on vacation (blogging, dumping and sharing photos, emailing, research) where I would normally leave my larger more expensive laptop at home.

Should it get damaged or stolen, there is no real loss and I’ll purchase a new one.

Generally € converts directly over to dollar so I'd assume it will actually be $399 dollar

I really like the eee PC. It has a small dedicated group of hackers and modders that are doing some pretty cool things with them. Adding 3G and GPS to name a few, I am considering buying it just to play around with it.

Hope so, $400 is within what I would pay for it. At upwards of $600, I would put the money towards an MBA.

It turns out the resolution is 1024x600 compared to the 7" model's 800x480. The main reason I was put off the first one was the low resolution, this larger screen and higher res is definitely a step in the right direction and will hopefully make it far more usable. The best thing though is that the dimensions are basically the same!

Anyone else now tempted for what is a TRUE ultraportable (*cough*, MBA, *cough*)? I can imagine this baby on my lap while watching TV. I'm curious to know what price they're gonna charge here in the UK ...

There may be some people who find the eeePC to be useful (I'm not one of them), but this thing is no more competition for the Air with a 9" screen than it was with a 7" screen.

The MBA is a great tool for writing. The eeePC is a great machine (for some) for browsing and emailing.

There is no comparison between either the displays, the size of the workspaces and the size of the keyboards on the two machines. For those of us wanting to get serious writing done, even the 9" display, and the kiddie-sized keyboard make it of little interest.

Different market altogether.

I agree completely, but again I do appreciate that some might want the eeePC, and the upgrade to the display is definitely an improvement to their previous model.

One for:

• Me - keep an eye on my trades when I'm away from the comp
• Sister - she's constantly checking Facebook and e-mail
• Cousin - need something small to fit in her handbag
• Other cousin - Going to Uni; useful on campus

Sorted. We're not gonna be writing long novels, we don't have chubby fingers that can only be used on full size keyboards and we don't need more than one window open or have such bad eyesight that we need a 13" screen.

Of course everyone has different requirements and for some the MBA is their idea of a dream machine but for OUR uses the EEE is perfect and that's all that matters in the end, right?

Eee and Classmate and now MBA

I have used the Eee PC for several weeks and the Intel Classmate PC also for several weeks - prior to Apple's January announcement of the MBA.

I did not like the Classmate PC so it is no longer an issue here. The Eee PC, otoh, is one interesting machine. Perfect for those quick email and surfing - something which the iPhone does pretty well, too - but with a smaller keyboard and screen. What makes the Eee PC powerful is its VGA out, SD card reader and 3 USB 2.0 ports. The trackpad is pretty decent, too.

However, first, it does not run Mac OS X legally! I advocate Linux but I prefer using Mac OS X whenever I could. Next, the Eee PC is just 1lb less than the MBA - the price difference of USD1400 is enough for me to justify the bigger screen, backlit keyboard, theoretically 76GB more storage space and it runs my commercial applications, too. (Yeah, have some sw investments already)... and not to forget my iTunes purchases and iPhone sync. [oh, my Eee PC had 2GB of RAM so same memory as the MBA]

The new Eee with the 9" display looks like a baby MacBook. I like it!

I checked the dimensions, and in terms of footprint, it's almost exactly half a MacBook, though it's a little thicker.

Go to eBay, click "buy it now" on a decent used laptop with a 12, 13, or 14" screen with an nVidia gpu, and put Ubuntu on it. You save money, get a laptop with a screen that you don't have to use a microscope to read, and get an actual laptop to use.

Size and weight. IOW, mostly the same reasons why people buy a MBA instead of a regular MB. And buying used eBay gear is hardly comparable to buying new from the store, otherwise nobody would be shopping at Apple stores when they can get cheaper used versions on eBay.
