Hi, Tagan. I don't think there's a step by step guide. What have you already done? And what is your problem?

Did you already connect everything? Which card do you have exactly? Is your card the short one or the long one? Does your card need external power or it can work with bus power? Did you already download the Nvidia web drivers? Maybe you could first update to the latest version of High Sierra, 10.13.6 (17G7024), download the matching Nvidia driver (here is the list) and activate it.

Yes I already connect everything. I'ts the short one. I plug in power supply from my PSU. I install NVIDIA Web Driver 387.10.10.10.40.124 with macOS 10.13.6 (17G6030). It says on the site that it is the right one. but mu mac canot start properly it make kernel panic if exprescard is connected with error

Yes I already connect everything. I'ts the short one. I plug in power supply from my PSU. I install NVIDIA Web Driver 387.10.10.10.40.124 with macOS 10.13.6 (17G6030). It says on the site that it is the right one.

It could be a driver problem: you could try the other one (387.10.10.10.40.127), that's for the same 17G6030 version, or update to High Sierra 17G7024 and web driver 387.10.10.10.40.128.

Judging from your second screenshot it's not recognized as the right card (it should tell you the name of the card and the right amount of VRAM, as you can see in my screenshot).

Sorry for the question, but is your Nvidia Driver active? (see the screenshot from my menubar)

It was hard but I made first step. I upgrade Mac OS 10.13.6 (17G7024) and install 387.10.10.10.40.128. The most hard part in my situation that I have dGPU problems on my mac.
First when my eGPU connected and I start up my computer (Nvidia Drivers set on WEB Driver ). Mac go to kernel panic

If Mac loaded (Nvidia Drivers set on Default macOS ) and I plug in my eGPU become work like HDMI cable. So it mirroring my screen on TV. but not working as eGPU

If you think the driver is correct for your graphics card, then I think you need to find a way to force the MacOS to prioritize (choose) eGPU. you can also post at egpu.io as there are more active members for eGPU that can help.

I think that your problems derive from this dGPU problem. The system you used to disable your dGPU is similar to the one realized by Dosdude here, right? That solution, though, gives some problems. it says that "After performing the steps below, sleep mode and brightness control will NOT work properly on your system".

Dosdude now has also a hardware, permanent solution to this problem, but it's more difficult because you have to solder (but now he's working also on a no soldering solution), it's risky and it needs some skills. This is the page for that project.

Hello to all,
I wonder if someone can help me or instruct me about how to set up my eGPU.

From the top:

I have iMac 2011 27". Intel Core i7 2600, 32GB of RAM and abysmal Radeon HD 6770 with even worse memory of 512MB.

Also, this is upgraded iMac. The stock was with 8GB and i5 2300 I think.

A few days ago I bought EXP GDC v8.4 or 8.5 not sure.

I have a variety of GPU's to choose from:

GIGABYTE Nvidia GTX 1050Ti 4GB
GIGABYTE AMD R9 390 8GB
MSI AMD RX 480 8GB

leftovers from mining days... :)

Before I bought EXP GDC I have tried with upgrading its stock GPU with Radeon HD 6970 2GB from Alienware.
Flashed BIOS put it in and it was working like a charm. I was so happy. But, the next day iMac wouldn't wake up from sleep. So GPU died the very next day from installing. Talking about bad luck... so 90$ down the drain.

Now I decided to try my luck with eGPU.

I could not find anything about instructions about iMac 2011, so decided to ask.

I tried to set it up by my self but I gut stuck.
I have Windows and macOS on it and when I run Win GPU starts up normally but only on an external monitor and it is always stuck on loading Windows screen (Windows 10 picture). If I run macOS it starts normally but on internal GPU.
It does not even recognize GPU from the mini PCIe slot.

I tried the same thing with the Windows laptop and also got stuck on the loading screen on an external monitor.

All GPUs are tested and 100% working.

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Hi, miloshov. I have an iMac very similar to yours: 21.5" iMac Mid 2011 , 2,8 Ghz Intel Core i7, 16 GB of RAM and AMD Radeon HD 6770M. High Sierra 10.13.6.
As I wrote in this post, I'm using the GDC Beast (I don't know which version, maybe the 8.0, from this page) and everything is going well. I'm using an MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC. Since this is a small one, for the power I'm just using a 12 volt DC supply plugged in the hole on the front (near the USB port).

It DOESN'T WORK with the internal display, but I don't care, because I've connected the card to a 4K monitor I put in front of my iMac via DisplayPort and to another monitor via DVI.

For it to work with an Nvidia card you need to download the Nvidia web drivers. If you're on High Sierra, you can find the right driver for your OS version here.

I've tried to use it with an MSI Radeon RX 560 AERO ITX 4G OC, but I couldn't manage to make it work or even recognize it.

So apparently AMD cards which are factory used brand are having issues and nVidia which are not are working...

I am sure there is a way to use internal display we only didn’t figure it up yet.

There is no point in using eGPU if you cannot use an internal monitor. In that case, I can buy PC with 2nd gen i7 for 70-80$ and just put my GPU there. Install Hackintosh and you are good to go.

The point here is to use 27" 2K display and all in one model with eGPU extension when you need it...

Thank you for sharing this. I will try with 1050ti and see what will happen.

If anyone has an idea on how to solve internal display issue or AMD cards please share...

The "point" is different for everyone and it depends on your needs. In my case, I just wanted to work on a big 4K (or 5K) screen, but a 5K iMac was too expensive for me, and this solution has given me something similar for much less money (i bought a used 27'' 4K LG monitor for 300$, and the GTX 1050 + GDC Beast + case were less than 200$).
And I'm still using a real Mac instead of a Hackintosh because I feel more comfortable in this way.

Of course. I was not questioning your "point" I was just saying that it is not same for me.
Sorry if I sounded differently.

No problem.
Anyway, I've just received a second GDC Beast I ordered last week (this time it's an 8.5c model, even if the AliExpress page where I bought it says "8.4D"), and the MSI Radeon RX 560 AERO ITX 4G OC that didn't work before, now is working. I didn't have to do anything (like waiting for the chime, or something like that): it turns on by itself when I turn on the iMac and it just works (exactly like the MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 2G OC I was using until yesterday).
I've tried this because with the NVIDIA sometimes the iMac suddenly logs me out, and in rare cases it restarts (it seems like if the driver crashes, or maybe it depends on the GDC Beast, I don't know). Anyway, I'm going to see how this card behaves.

I too have got this going with a 2011 27inch iMac, with the latest High Sierra, and no patches at all. I am using a rx 550 640sp card with a 4k monitor (running at 60Hz). (The 640sp part is important.) I see that there are even cheaper devices than the exp gdc, that do the same thing.
Currently I am trying to get the eGPU working with Mojave, but that does need patching, and I am struggling a bit.

Let me know if you succeed because I don't think it's possible to have full hardware acceleration with an AMD card that is not in the list of supported graphics cards.

I have used this card in a thunderbolt enclosure, connected to a Mac mini 2014, and it worked well. I have made some progress with my iMac, getting the egpu to work, booting from Mojave, but it has a weird colour. I am pretty happy with HS.

@Larsvonhier (or someone else), did you succeed in installing Catalina on an unsupported Mac with GDC Beast and an AMD Metal supported card (like my RX560)? On my iMac 12,1 I've miserably failed… It doesn't see the card at all.

I´ll try soon and report back here!
Thank you, but I've just tried to install Mojave with Dosdude's patch and the result is the same:
the card is not recognized. Same as with Catalina, if I DON'T apply the legacy Video card patch, it's just as if the card wasn't there. If I apply it, System Report tells me that there's an AMD GPU in the PCIe slot, but it doesn't recognize the model (it's an RX 560) and it says that there's no Kext loaded.

I'm beginning to think that what Dosdude wrote on his homepage regarding my internal GPU means that it's actually impossible to use another GPU:

iMac12,x (systems with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs will be almost unusable when running Catalina.)

And in the Mojave page, he says that

If you want to enable GPU acceleration on these machines, you'll need to disable the AMD GPU (This will work on MacBook Pro 8,2 and 8,3 systems ONLY. You CANNOT disable the AMD GPU in an iMac.)

At this point, I think I have to stay with High Sierra (the latest OS I can natively have on my iMac 12,1).

@kautame ,

For Imac users (2009-2011) please upgrade your MXM GPU !
more info can be found here :

An EFI bootscreen mod is available since a short while for some nvidia and AMD cards thx to Nick over there !
newer and beter roms will be there someday, since we have dumps of a 2011 nvidia card prototype ;)

Thank you, but that's not the solution for me. I already have an eGpu (GDC Beast with Radeon RX 560 4GB) connected to one 27'' 4K LG monitor and another 1080p monitor. It works super-great in High Sierra, and I'm just trying to find a way to use it in Mojave or Catalina too, because the 4K monitor is my main monitor now. Also, this is my main computer for work, and I prefer not to mess too much with it.

ok I see, but do keep in mind that your 6770m will die someday.
perhaps eGPU does not work since Mojave/Catalina dont work well with AMD HD5xxx/6xxxx series of cards, and therefore eGPU also does not work.
Since you say it does work under HS this could explain this..

I dont have eGPU boxes, otherwise I would happily test it for you on one of our 27" 2011 upgraded GPU iMac's..

Resolved here: Catalina 10.15.0 still eGPU capable on unsupported machines... (had a shakey internal slot
to the card, so it first looked like Catalina does not play along any more).

Have just tried it again with the screen saver "raining cubes" that requires Metal GFX.
Runs even on headless eGPU, see screenshots.

Thank you, Larsvonhier. In my case it's not working even in Mojave. Is it possible that the problem lies in the "GPUFamily1 v4" stuff? Because about my card (MSI Radeon RX 560) High Sierra says that it's GPUFamily1 v3.
I can't try a different card since the only one I have is this one and the NVIDIA GTX 1050 (that requires web drivers).
Schermata 2019-10-14 alle 11.43.18.png

This is what Apple says about this GPUFamily1 v4:

"This feature set was introduced with the first family of Mac GPUs that support Metal and run macOS 10.14."

Does this mean that if I see "GPUFamily1 v3" my card is not compatible with Mojave? Or it just means that, under Mojave, a compatible GPU card will obtain "GPUFamily1 v4" functionality?

UPDATE: It seems that my second guess was the right one. "GPUFamily1 v4" it's just the condition of the card in Mojave (the same card that in High Sierra says "GPUFamily1 v3"). In other words, "GPUFamily1 v4" is the official name of "Metal 2" in Mojave and Catalina.

At this point, as it seems impossible for me to have my card recognized in Mojave and Catalina, I think it could actually be the problem with iMacs with AMD Radeon HD 5xxx and 6xxx series GPUs, as I already said in a previous post here, citing Dosdude's words:

If you want to enable GPU acceleration on these machines, you'll need to disable the AMD GPU (This will work on MacBook Pro 8,2 and 8,3 systems ONLY. You CANNOT disable the AMD GPU in an iMac.)

Anyway, I think that there should be a way to solve this problem since I don't need or want to disable the AMD GPU: even now I'm using my eGPU only for my external 4K monitor, and the internal GPU should continue to work on the internal one as it's doing now in High Sierra.

I have an early 2011 13' MacBook Pro that has a mini PCIe slot, is there any chance of getting an eGPU to work with this system? If so is there a graphics card that is recommended? I am using Mojave at the moment but to be able to run Catalina using an eGPU would be ideal.
