Human factors ergonomics. I've nearly erased a few disks when meaning to eject them.

No, but I do think it’s a bad idea to have those two commands so close to each other. That popup is there precisely to make it an almost oops instead of a disaster. You are not used to making a second click when you choose Eject, so it’s not a reflex that would make it likely for you to click on Yes.

Today, after I inserted usb memory into my Mac, I noticed something in the menu bar for the memory: first entry eject disk, ok fine. Second entry right after that is Erase disk.

This the current genius of Apple to defy common sense.
