10.11.1 and 10.11.2
The Contacts App freezes all the time when I am editing my Google Contacts.
There is a beachball icon after you press the edit button in the contacts app and it will take 10-20 seconds before the app allows you to edit the fields.

10.10 - all works fine.

Thank you! I also have noticed this. Delays occur when you're doing anything involving Contacts such as, in the Messages app, adding a Messages sender to the address book or just adding a new phone number to an existing contact.

I'm surprised I haven't heard more about this. It's definitely a Google Contacts issue. Doesn't do it with my Exchange contacts (which I don't ordinarily use). Could be worse for me as I'm on an old 2007 MBP.

A re-installation of El Capitan didn't resolve it.

Last night I found discovered a fix. In a nutshell it's turning off contact syncing for the Google account and adding your Google contacts sync back via CardDAV:
  1. Go to System Preferences>Internet Accounts
  2. Uncheck "Contacts" for the Google account
  3. Click the "+" to add a new account
  4. Select "CardDAV"
  5. Set Account Type to "Manual"
  6. User Name is Gmail address
  7. Password is password, or a new app-specific password if 2-factor authorization is "ON" for Google
  8. Server Address is "google.com"
Now enjoy your responsive Contacts app.

Next OS update I'll switch back to see if it's fixed.

Thank you! Yes, it works.
Only - I had to turn on “Allowing less secure apps to access your account” in Google options. Otherwise impossible to create an CardDAV account.

10.11.3 Beta (15D9c) - it's not fixed.

It happens with other CardDAV accounts too. I’m not sure whether it is the same issue, but whenever I start typing in a contacts card, such as address, there is a serious input delay. This doesn’t happen on Mavericks.

In my case, I have two-factor authentication "on" at Google and I just needed to create a new, app-specific password for the separate CardDAV account.

I can confirm this issue in OS X 10.11.2, switching to CardDAV solved the issue for me as well. Hopefully it will be resolved in the next OS X update.

Same here, I've switched to cardDAV, hardly any beach-ball activity anymore.
Great workaround!
I'm on 10.11.2, on an OLD iMac C2D.

Same here. CardDAV account at Fastmail freezes. Have to wait 10-12 seconds after clicking "Edit". Using 10.11.3. App is beach balling. I have already tried to remove the Address book folder in ~/Library/Application Support without success.

I have tried both local contacts (On My Mac) and iCloud contacts and these get into edit mode instantly, so the issue is actually related to CardDAV accounts.

My only comment re this fix is that by doing the above (which is very useful, thank you) , imessenger now experiences the spinning wheel.....its like the problem has transferred from one application to another. Has anyone experienced this too and found a workaround?

I use Messages frequently and haven't seen what you're describing since switching to a separate CardDAV account for my Google contacts.

Hi Brian,

Its almost like the problem simply moved from one application to another. Messages has always worked very well on my 5K imacs (running version 10.11.3) and now since creating the new Carddav for google contacts (thats all my contacts) its performing very poorly?

I'm very tired of this OS. Its been a complete pain since updating which naturally I didn't have a chance as thee are two brand new imacs.

The spelling correction is non existent in mail for example, the Office 2016 has been shocking and now this....Its about time Apple slowed down and actually tested there products first rather than simply say "hey look we're so clever we just released another OS" to all the kids who use iphones. The software is becoming dumbed down and unreliable and boring for professional users.

Others can chime in about the Contacts fix and Messages but, like I said, it's working for me.

Yes, major Mac OS updates have been too frequent in recent years. Hopefully, they're reconsidering this strategy.

Thanks, worked for me too. Was really disappointed to have the same issue after I spent an afternoon reinstalling fresh.

I've given up on 'mail' and 'calandar' now opting for Airmail and Sunrise. Only needed contacts for iMessage which now thankfully works with CardDAV

I have the same problem and get the same error logs when I use my personal CardDAV server (radicale) with Contacts. It doesn't seem to be simply an issue with Google Contacts.
