Assuming you want the box... I'd be tempted to put the laptop in your hand luggage in an appropriate sleeve, being VERY careful that it isn't under excessive pressure or inadequately padded - i.e. use a proper laptop carrying bag and sleeve and don't over fill or knock it around. Keep the power adapter and other bits in your luggage too, and then ship yourself the empty box in the mail. You can truthfully enough say it's just an empty box worth pennies on the customs declaration on the mail item. As for what you declare in the airport, that's none of my business and I don't even know what you're supposed to do going to Germany.

i am in the military. i am deployed there and i fly back with the wounded from downrange as a medical attendant to the states...

speaking of which we had to do an emergency landing just now (scared ********) as our landing gears were broke and wouldn't go down...

i am in the uso right now at the casaf...i am still shook up...and trying to get my mind off it by going on a computer...

Whatever you do, don't exclaim that the "new MacBook Pro is the BOMB" during the flight.

You'll get in trouble. :(

haha yeah nothing like that. My friends and I would always say that our phones were being tapped after watching Conspiracy Theory and saying that, "the president is the bomb!"

Never ever EVER

Check a laptop with your luggage unless it is sealed in one of those metallic cases that the movie guys fill with unmarked bills.

+1 TSA have been known to steal cameras and other valuables out of checked luggage. Never ever put valuables in checked luggage. Always carry it on. In some cases, TSA will open your bag and not bother to let you know. Put locking luggage seals on your checked baggage. Because it's not a lock, it won't matter if the TSA breaks it (they've broken TSA approved locks and not bothered to use the key), but you'll still have the security. Also, it'll help with luggage identification when picking it off the carousel.
As others have said, carry on the actual computer and put the box in checked luggage. This way, if the airline loses your checked luggage (which it's likely to do), you won't cry much over a lost box.
In case you can't tell, I hate checking my luggage. Viva la carry on! ;)

To prove that you didn't replace the electronics they scan with a bomb.
Well, assuming that the scanner couldn't see the bomb and therefore they make you boot it anyway, there's no way they'd know you didn't, say, replace the optical with a bomb or whatnot.
