We had a PowerBook at work that fell onto the floor and dented the corner. A few months later, for an unrelated issue, it went into Apple for repair. They fixed the dent, too, without any questions. Maybe they thought they damaged it in shipment, I don't know.

Of course, if your MBA is working perfectly, that's not much of an option for you. :)

My guess is that your friend's powerbook was seriously messed up and Apple just replaced it with a new or refurb model. I seriously doubt they would fix a dent just because they had it in the shop... unless they were trying to boost their image by going above and beyond in order to keep a customer for life (what a novel idea).

It's called "fraud" or, more specifically, "insurance fraud."

I had to go back through some of my old law school books to find the answer, but apparently it's not legal.

Depends on the cover - if I'd dropped my MBA and it was in such a state it needed some serious cash for a repair or even replacement, I'd be completely covered under my home contents insurance. You pay extra and depending on the cover the items need to be named, but you would be covered...

If their insurance covers damage outside of the home (which mine does for my laptops & cameras) then it's completely legal - if they don't mind that is. May be worth exploring though.

Once again, factor in the puppy dog eyes, and change the story to that you had your bag knocked off your shoulder by a random stranger ;)

Haha, thanks.

Denting an $1800 laptop is something you don't get over.
I've got a small dent in my $2000 MBP on the right side between the plug in for a monitor and the hinge. Not sure how it got there, it's probably been there a while bt since it's so small, I never noticed it. My ACD will still plug into it perfectly so I'm not too worried and yeah, I'm pretty much over it. Yes, you can get over it. It's aluminum after all.

I just got off the phone from the Authorized reseller... thank goodness I didn't tell them my Air's serial number. The guy told me to call the "Apple Center" and to get a quote from them regarding the cost of repair. Thing is, it's closed right now (after office hours) so I'll have to wait until the weekend. Meanwhile, I face scrutiny from my classmates. Oh well. Any other suggestions? Maybe using a hammer? :D

Emergency? Really? Over scrutiny from classmates? Who cares about them?
The dent should be ok and you should be able to live with it unless the computer is not working properly. If it's having problems then take it in and bring your credit card.

Here's what you do (if you are the brave at heart type) :D
Take a pair of channel lock pliers and wrap plenty of masking tape around the jaws until you cannot feel the ridges of the jaws. Then very carefully try to bend the lid back to close to its original profile.
To fix the scratches and nicks take a very fine file and carefully clean up the edge until it's nice an smooth. To finish it off an give it a brushed finish take some Scotchbrite and polish the area of the ding.
As I say this is for the brave of heart and if you don't want to spend big bucks for a new screen and cover (I don't recommend trying to remove the screen as it's attached with double sided tape and you will really mess it up.

Hong Kong service for apple repair sucks, what you need to do is go to Shenzhen and get it done there, just tell them thats the way it came out of the box.

They should fix it for you.

Cheers

I don't agree... I would be upset too. Spend all that money on my MBA and then dent it like that??? Shoot... I got pissed the first time I dropped my Iphone... Working properly or not, the damage would ruin it for me!!!

good luck sir...

Get a quote for the top case which should resolve the closing then later if it bugs do the bottom.

Fixed! (somewhat.

I followed Siron's instructions and bent it back. The bent part no longer makes the screen tilt, but it's still tilted for some reason... I think the hinge has loosened a bit, but it works and isn't bugging me that much anymore.

These types of posts always lead to one question: did you buy it with a credit card? Have you contacted them to find out if provide accidental coverage? I know that AMEX does cover for 90 days and that is who I use for my Apple purchases.

Ouch that's a severe drop. You probably need a new laptop bag if you "don't know how it happened".

May be this simple answer is

You had an accident at home and see if your parents can claim off the home insurance??

Small claims will increase your insurance costs and possibly make you lose your insurance. Yes it sucks but the insurance companies are rip offs, they like to take your money but don't want to pay out.

No, that lie won't work.

Much better idea. Notice these types of credit card benefits sometimes come and go, and can differ depending on the card, but it's worth a shot to look into it.

What's the emergency then? Other than being dumb.

I can sympathize with putting a dent in you expensive new laptop.
I crimped the case of my PB in a hotel safe shortly after buying it. 4 years later it still works, so WTF!

BTW damage like this might have been prevented with a nice protective laptop sleeve for $39.00

Heh...

In my opinion, it looks worse after i "fixed" it but the hinge is fine, so I'm good. Thanks for all your help people.

I apologize if the "EMERGENCY" part of the title kinda pissed you off, but... yeah. Whatever. :)
