Enable Native Tethering the Easy Way on 3.1.2 (Not DevTeam way)

The nation's fastest 3G network
This is for those of you who were holding on to 3.0 or 3.0.1 because tethering wasn't working. Although DevTeam released their hack just recently, it's very complicated to the average user. I found this while playing with MyWi and thought I'd share. No weird coding and entering stuff in terminal. This is pretty straight forward.

  1. Upgrade to 3.1.2 using PwnageTool.
  2. Make sure Open SSH and Open SSL are installed through Cydia.
  3. Install Rock App from Cydia
  4. Download and install the MyWi 3.2.4 Trial through Rock.
  5. Run the MyWi app and enable tethering on Bluetooth and USB.
  6. Reboot your iPhone.
  7. Go to Settings >> General >> Network, and make sure Internet Tethering is available.
  8. Use Transmit or any other FTP program to establish connection with the iPhone. (Username: root, Password: alpine)
  9. Navigate to the Applications folder and delete MyWi.app and Rock.app (if you don't want to keep them).
  10. Restart or Respring your iPhone.
  11. Enjoy Tethering by connecting through USB or Bluetooth!

This method lets you keep native tethering without paying $10 for MyWi or any other amount for PDANet. The tethering stays through reboots as well!

MuscleNerd Warning: AT&T may start getting aggressive with your billing if you use that patch to re-enable tethering.

just warring..if this is true..watch out AT&T wants money..i been doing this on my 3.0.1 but i dont really use tethering on my 3GS i can pretty much access all the info i need but tethering is good to have.. AT&T want to be a BEEP:rolleyes: they cant keep up..
 
Well, I haven't been charged yet. I rarely use tethering as well. I only use it at airports that don't have free wifi. Everywhere else, I have wi-fi. It's those long waits at the airport that having tethering helps me.

I guess the only thing that we can do is wait and see. My bet is that for patched iphones, you can't tell the difference if it's being used with a computer or not for the tethering and use of data. I guess we'll find out soon enough though.
 
Works for me BUT I cannot access the internet from my MBP. A "self assigned IP address" error comes up in Network Preferences.

BTW, tethering worked fine for me on 3.0.1

You could use Cydia if MyWi has been updated to 3.2.4, which I don't think it has. That's the only version that hasn't given any problems. I do believe, however, that the 3.2.1 version that was there when I last checked is new enough to make the mods necessary and you can use it. It should work for you. Let me know if it does.
 
I wonder how MuscleNerd would know that about AT&T? I can't see AT&T and the Dev Team being very Buddy Buddy. :p

does anyone here ever research anything? From MN's twitter right after posting the warning about AT&T:

@87linux someone brought it up that rumor on IRC the other night. But if PDANet users still aren't seeing usage $$ then it's prob ok.

Just a rumor folks, along with the usual warning. As anyone knows, MN and Dev-Team are always very cautious and always warn people of the possible downsides. This is one of them. chill.

Umm... I don't follow MN on twitter so I didn't see that. I only read what is in this thread. Chill.

I was assuming it was something like you were saying, hence my comment about his relationship with AT&T. He obviously doesn't want lots of people pissed at him for getting smacked with charges after modding their phones.

I'd be surprised if they did start hitting people with charges now after it's been going on for so long with nothing. If they did, I'd expect it's because a tethering for $$ option would be coming and they would want some sales.
 
whats the difference between deleting the MyWi app through SSH and just deleting it through RockApp?

I think it's very feasible to hack it to dupe the AT&T servers into thinking it's your iPhone using data and it isn't being tethered. The only way you're even on their radar is if you go over 5GB bandwidth per month.

There have been many threads reporting how AT&T could know (in theory) whether or not the data is going to your phone.

The thing I'm interested in is how Net Neutrality will effect the Tethering issue.

It basically means that AT&T can't treat any data differently over their network. Data is just data. So TV signals, VoIP and all that is treated the same.

So will that carry over to tethering? Honestly, as much as I want it, I do think that if AT&T wants they should be able to charge for tethering as it could be a significant drain on their network as well as be a replacement for services already offered by AT&T. Although, they should offer it as an official plan if they want people to stop doing it without paying.

I agree, but what I meant that although it might not be possible now, it is shouldn't be that hard to trick AT&T into believing that the phone is using data and not your computer. They probably use different routing, but if you route everything through the phone and back again, it shouldn't be a problem. It would probably mean slower 3G, but a slower 3G is better than no 3G. Only time will tell, really.

The iPhone was highly advertised as being capable of tethering, but only with lack of support from AT&T. It's really ridiculous that every other major carrier has supported tethering from the beginning or has made plans available.

I wonder if Apple would have given them the Exclusive agreement if they had known AT&T would be so slow to keep up with MMS and Tethering.
