Now, now...don't make fun of John Nash, Jr.

He's clearly got so much more going on right now while coming up with witty interweb repartee like "tard". He's very likely working on plans to turn his microwave into a fusion reactor, while splicing shark genes into human stem cells to cure cancer, while memorizing all of Wikipedia in alphabetical order. It's tough being "not special in any way" and just like everyone else who memorizes pages of mathematic formulae at a glance, so let's cut the kid some slack. :D

What I was getting at is that if you never studied you got NO idea on how you actually learn things when studying. I never said "at a glance" I said read them once or twice.

And no, right now I am not doing anything productive really as I am done with studying for today.

LOL, alright, I'm done. But at least I'll have a first class seat in hell. At the bar.

there is only 2 things i would use multi tasking on ipad for:
1) listening to music and doing something else
2) while typing say i need info or a pic from the net i would like to copy the info or pic (witch we can do already) and re enter the pages app right where i left off and put the thing i copied in the document.

but im thinking that in the months before the os 4.0 is implemented on the ipad apple will add new features to make it more computery things like everything already in 4.0 and and features like wireless printing within the pages app or just in general wireless printing, maybe a file system and a way to view those files i sincerely think apple is cooking something up.:D:apple:

Research in cognitive neuroscience shows that "multitasking" is a myth. Productivity, in fact, drops dramatically with computer users who constantly switch between tasks.

So if somebody says that they are great at multitasking, dismiss them with a chuckle and move on the next job candidate.

Ummm.... You CAN do that.

Most people want the ability to SWITCH between aps quickly... because MOST people can't actually multitask. Geez, most people can't even read the scroll on the bottom of CNN while also watching the video (and actually ABSORB both). Having music or video "in the background" isn't multitasking... that's just giving yourself background noise LOL.

The ONLY time I've ever really wanted multitasking (on my iPhone) is so that texting doesn't interrupt what I'm reading or writing. If you notice though, you actually STOP doing whatever it is you're doing when you're texting or IMing (hence the reason no one should drive and watch TV, drive and text, drive and talk on the phone).

It's the lack of quick switching that bugs people. There's no quick way to just answer someone in a text without leaving the app you're in and opening texting, then doing the reverse to get back.

It's annoying, but not a deal-breaker for me... and I expect OS4 will resolve most of it.

If you guys think pandora music in the background is multitasking...then wow. Really...wow.

Just personality difference. I don't think you see the value of film the way I do. To me, I see it as a discredit to a good film to give it anything else other than your undivided attention.

I have to agree with you here. So much of the meaning in a film is given through the things that happen on the screen. Audio is just as important, but it is the combination of the two that makes film unique.

For most TV shows I usually am on my laptop at the same time, as less thought is typically put into the cinematography because of lower budgets and shorter time scales.

Been really hard for me to use my iPad after having used pr0switcher on my iPhone for a couple months. I didn't realize I'd gotten so dependent on multitasking. I find myself going back to the iPhone a lot.

I hope this gets better with a jailbreak...

OS4 is way too far away.

If you haven't tried iPhone OS multitasking in jailbreak world, I would recommend it, even if you check it out on a friend's phone. It really extends the functionality of the phone and makes it very very versatile.

Edit: You may think it makes you unproductive, but having a thesaurus and dictionary handy while you write, or access to wikipedia while you email, or access to IM and iPod playlist or the Settings app while you're doing stuff only helps productivity, not hinder it. Sometimes you need to look at a reference material (PDF) while you're working in excel... this stuff gets to be a problem eventually.

As far as a "Documents" folder goes, I'm missing this too - my biggest missing feature.

Just picked up an iPad two days ago. Have been using it quite a bit and enjoying every single moment of it, except when I have to type something long like now. One thing I noticed during these two days is how much I enjoy just doing one thing at a time instead of 4-5 things as I would have on my laptop. My old way of using the computer consisted of constant distraction.

With the iPad, I am very focused on the one thing I am doing. I find myself finishing articles, watching every single second of video clips, just in general paying more attention to what is in front of me instead of thinking about the 5 other tabs I have opened. I enjoy this experience very much as it makes my feel more calm and focused. I also find consuming content on apps to be much less distracting also than consuming the same content on the web counterpart. This is definitely a much better device for content consumption as it lets you focus on the content. If I need to do any heavy lifting I will go on the MBP which now sits on my desk.

Anyone else feel this way also? Although I could definitely use the audio backgrounder API.

And just imagine how much you would accomplish in on day if you got rid of iPad altogether! Stop browsing the Internet, do something productive!

I've been using the iPad when I'm writing music and I'd say it's very productive for content creation in my case. I've already used it on two projects in the past week.

Using reference material while your working on a paper or something isn't human-multitasking. You're still focused on doing one thing, I don't think anybody's saying that is unproductive. It's when you switch between totally different activities that your brain gets less effective. At least my brain does.

hmm...clearly you guys who say humans can't multitask don't drive and talk on your phone. If you don't, good job on being safe on the road. If you do, multitasking on ipad sitting in front of TV is much safer than talking on phone while driving...well doing anything else while driving.
I love my ipad but do hate that I can't be in a webex meeting and look up an email or something online...see blackberries do have some use. Just wish i could do all on ipad. I do wonder how apps like webex and gotomeeting will be handled in hibernating stage when you get out of it to check email or use safari. Anyways great discussion so far.

He wasn't trying to out-degree you, McFly.

No, I'm quite certain that I can't out-degree Baby Einstein here. I'm sure that my Ph.D. in molecular biology pales in comparison to whatever academic achievements he has earned. Someone as preternaturally gifted in multi-tasking as Davidkoh would obviously be bored by the pedestrian task of earning only one doctorate at a time. It's too bad I have no idea how to actually learn things when studying, or I could have accomplished so much more in my graduate school years.

Oh well. ;)

absolutely right

Talking about efficiency, single task is really the right thing to do when you need to put your 100% in it. forget your twits, leave your mails, let's just be quiet. :D

Web browsing was really nice and relaxing for a week. Then I got Atomic Browser and back to five tabs at a time.

Oh and Davidkoh, you have some serious ADD. I would take some medication for that. You are the reason Hollywood movies have been so dumbed down.

EDIT: After some thought, I think David may have Asperger's Syndrome. He mentioned an interest in math. He cannot empathize with characters in movies. Movies in particular, one facial expression can say more about a character than all the dialogue in the world. If you glance away from the screen repeatedly, you'll never understand the characters you are watching. People with AS cannot recognize facial expressions or body language. They usually take everything you say literally because they cannot detect sarcasm. For someone like that, there is no point in paying full attention to a movie because they cannot comprehend the images they are seeing. They can still enjoy movies, usually on a surface level, without grasping the subtleties and depth of the characters.
