I've got the same problem. any suggestion to solve? driving me crash...


When trying to erase the disk, got the following error:
>> newfs_apfs: unable to reformat /dev/disk2s1: Illegal byte sequence
When trying to erase with APF encrypt, got this error:
>> newfs_apfs: /dev/disk2s1: is hosting another file ssytem: Resource busy

diskutil mount readOnly /dev/disk2s1
>> Volume on disk2s1 failed to mount; it appears to be an APFS Volume which might be locked

diskutil unlockVolume /dev/disk2s1
Passphrase:
>> Unlocking any cryptograhphic user on APFS Volume disk2s1
>> Error unlocking APFS Volume: Couldn't mount disk (-69842)

diskutil apfs listCryptoUsers /dev/disk2s1
  • Local Open Directory User
  • iCloud User
  • ICloud Recorvery External Key


fsck_apfs -n /dev/disk2s1
>> error: mount_apfs exit satus 73
fsck_apfs -y /dev/disk2s1
>> error: mount_apfs exit satus 73
 
THanks for your help in advance, as i got a similar problem i went to read all the comments, and thank to you ive got this information from my disk the one that is not allowing me to mont the disk and the passwords are not working at all.
seems that filevault was locked automaticaly.

and doesnt allow me to mount it back
is there any advise by this issue community ?

Hi there. The nomount suggestion seems to have worked for me.

Try

diskutil apfs unlock Volume disk6s1 - passphrase(YOUR PASSWORD) - nomount

For me this returned the message:

Unlocking any cryptographic user on apfs volume disk6s1
Unlocked but did not mount apfs volume
 
fsck_apfs -n /dev/rdisk4s1

** Checking volume.
** Checking the container superblock.
** Checking the EFI jumpstart record.
** Checking the space manager.
** Checking the object map.
** Checking the APFS volume superblock.
** Checking the object map.
