A potential crisis here, chez Shrink!

On Thursday last I placed in order for coffee, in the hopes that it would be shipped on the day I placed the order. Foolish of me as the order did not go out. As Monday is a holiday here in the States, the earliest that the order might go out is Tuesday. That means that the earliest I might receive the order is Wednesday.

But… I don't think I have enough beans to last until Wednesday!

Should I run out of beans I'm sure that you will all understand if hysteria ensues. Forget support and sympathy for having broken my neck, a trivial event compared to the possibility of running out of coffee.:(

Stay tuned as early next week my posts may be even more incoherent than usual and filled with pathetic whining and crying.o_O

I applaud and roundly echo your priorities: For, as you so rightly observe, a broken neck is nothing, but nothing, when set in the scales and measured against the cosmic and wider scheme of things, and, candidly, is less than nothing when compared to - or contrasted with - the indubitable trauma of running out of coffee, decent, suitable, high grade quality coffee - by this coming Wednesday.

You have my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy, my earnest commiserations. And you have my respect for your unflinching recognition of just where one's priorities ought to lie in an emergency, especially a coffee-deprived emergency. A man who understands the important things in life.......who richly merits his well deserved place as Our Mentor In All Things Coffee Related On This Very Thread.

Thanks for the warning. Otherwise we might have come to the conclusion that the dementia had accelerated!

Ah @Scepticalscribe one more thing to add to my commentary on the book I just read, in the other thread I just replied to you in, one thing of note about Captain Picard and his tea consumption in the series is that the very first thing he drinks in the book and episode is coffee, not tea! He had a cup and offered one to Commander RIker as well.

Ah, fascinating.

When did the preference for 'Tea. Earl Grey. Hot' become such a norm for Captain Picard?

If I had to hazard a guess, I suspect that it might be the personal preference of Patrick Stewart - who is British, a superb actor - and who possibly worked his own personal preferences into the his interpretation of the character of Jean-Luc Picard (and yes, I have known close French friends who came to acquire a taste for, or, develop a marked preference for good quality tea over coffee, after visits to the UK or Ireland).

That I am not sure of. I suppose I'd have to start watching the show, or continue reading more of the books to see when that changed. I was surprised to see he started with coffee as I had always assumed he was the tea guy.

That would be my best guess as well.

And yes they are from my kitchen drawer when you have one of those awkward people who turn up and ask for decaf!

Death before dishonor.
Well needs must and all that.

Hope the delivery turns up sooner than expected.
Have you limited yourself to one cup a day?
[doublepost=1476038055][/doublepost]
Agreed.

Wouldn't touch such things with the proverbial barge-pole..........
Probably why we don't get any visitors! :D

I don't get many visitors, either.

I wonder if that might have something to do with my "Welcome" mat.

(I had to have it custom made...I couldn't find any pre-made with the quote from Dante. Go figure...)

Oh, well, Dante.....are you surprised that the descendants of the world's first modern democratic polity don't feel the need to make a living from the manufacture of tastefully intelligent and thought provoking door-mats?

And yet, you expect those who enter (especially if they have managed to successfully identify this source) to feel an, um, warm welcome? Hm. (Cue the sound of muffled applause).

Damn. Where can I find a Dante mat?

(Nevertheless, a wonderful source; count me impressed. But then, my tastes are quite specific, rather peculiar and exceedingly particular....)

Did I ever relate - oh, around almost three to four years ago - my unrestrained joy in finding a lovely hardback copy - quite old - but beautifully bound of this self same work?

What do you guys think about this machine?

What do I think?

Well, I think you should stop looking at what flashy TV chefs are advertising, and, instead, start thinking about what you, yourself, would like to be able to learn to prepare as good quality coffee.

That means working out not just what you wish to learn to do, but also asking yourself what you are not prepared to learn to do, or to to want to do, and not to want to do. Personally, for example, at the moment, I have absolutely no interest in roasting my own beans.

Thus, I buy pre-roasted beans. At least two days a week, I am in a hurry, as I have meetings to attend, elsewhere; on those days, I will not grind my own beans, thus, I have a (small) ready supply (of freshly roasted) pre-ground beans to hand.

You need to work out for yourself what your needs - and equally - what your limits are.

Yes, that's what I'm trying to do. It's a balance between time and effort. I'm struggling a bit with getting the right grind, be it espresso or French press. My main drink of choice (at the moment) is a milky latte or flat white. The Sage looks a nice and quick solution that doesn't require too much skill. I'm also looking at the DeLonghi bean to cup but not sure about it. It requires even less 'skill'.

It appears to be a rebranded Breville Barista Express.

From the sound of my meticulously weighed 18.5 grams of freshly double roasted beans falling into the hopper, the heady aroma of said beans as they are transmuted to an extremely desirable form, the muscle memory invoked tamp, the giddy gleeful extraction that never fails to put me into a wide eyed trancelike state of euphoria to the first and last sinful sip of the resulting nectar this machine has not once let me down in just short of 2 years.

Is it the best machine available? No. However its a great starter for the budding home barista and at its price point offers enough temperature, dose and grind adjustments to allow shot tailoring. Its sturdy build, compact all in one design, small footprint and simple user interface make it cost effective, comfortable, easy and convenient to use.

It is quick to come to temperature, delivers consistent results although may require small adjustments between different beans, roasts and levels of bean freshness. It froths adequately enough to partake in a little latte art should the whim catch you and has never once run out of steam on me.

Other than a wipe down after use, a flush when she tells me (about once a month) and because of our hard water supply I follow with a purge of white vinegar to remove any possible scale buildup very little maintenance has been required to keep it in pristine condition.

In all honesty I have no regrets with this machine however after all that I am currently at a point where I am considering an upgrade to something a little more classical. Something a little more powerful. Something much more curvaceous and whole lot more shiny. Something undoubtably far more expensive.

My dream is to own a cafe grade La Marzocco machine. The dream is easily accomplished financially, it's convincing your other half you, no, you both need it to get it. Maybe one day. I'd probably have to sell a lot of my gear. You realize you have a coffee making problem when you do some "fall cleaning" and notice you have about 50 different coffee appliances. Not to mention multiple sets of coffee mugs, espresso cups, Turkish coffee cups, etc.

Anyway, I posted several weeks back that on a trip to the UK I had Kenco, but I recall it coming in a blue stickered glass jar. Awful rubbish. Anyway, we had a very hot weekend here. Absolutely appalling weather. Little wind, some humidity and high heat in the middle of the day. Strong coffee, mixed with organic additive free almond milk and plenty of ice. Though I did add a half shot of Flor De Cana 12 year to the last glass of the day. I don't like using a "pricy" rum for mixing, but I couldn't find the bottle of Pyrat XO I keep around for dark rum mixed drinks.

A far cry from the chilly weather we had two weeks ago with light morning drizzles. I want off this crazy weather pattern!

Ah, that is my dream too - a La Marzocco, but not a café grade machine; quite candidly, I would be more than happily content with the GS/3 or the Linea Mini. In truth, I am nowhere nearly as - I was about to write 'obsessive' - let us instead use a milder term, 'perfectionist' - as some who dwell here on this thread.
[doublepost=1476091874][/doublepost]I love trains, and travelling by train - it is such a civilised way to travel - and really love those old (Victorian) railway stations. Thye are a wonderful example of solidly conceived and built "public architecture", classic in design and appearance, robust, elegantly proportionate, functional - in the best sense of that word - and wonderfully enduring.

In some private conversations over the weekend with @Shrink it was declared that in relation to coffee criticism I am officially insane! Apparently that ship sailed long ago and since he's the guy who gets to decide who is and who isn't insane, I can take it to the bank!

Oh, yes, dear boy, you joined many of us in the Land of Coffee Insanity long ago. You are, indeed, among the lost souls.

BTW...my Atomic order of beans has arrived! As I will run out of my old order today...this is a positive event of biblical proportions!:D
