you are of course correct, but the nespresso capsules are vacuum sealed, so it's not like grinding your own, but it's not a bad compromise. making "real"coffee at home is a bit of a bother: you can only buy coffee beans in small portions (otherwise they lose their freshness), you need to grind (and clean the grinder) and than you have the machines that tend to be big, and require cleaning of their own.

Quite right, maintaining a proper coffee setup takes some dedication. These days I usually just drip from a ceramic cone with a cloth filter or do a press: far less mantenance!

yeah, that's great (and for just coffee i use macchinetta with ground coffee that i buy in a very small bag, so it's fresh for like 2 days), but if you like steamed milk and foam you're in a tight spot. i guess it's very personal, based on one's uses. i quite like coffee with steamed milk so, the macchinetta is used once / twice per day.

Hmmm, I've used Nespresso machines in the past. There is certainly worse coffee out there, but I didn't think it was worth the $$$.

Perhaps I'm just being a coffee snob, but anything that comes in pre-ground pods is guaranteed to be inferior to good beans, freshly ground.

Then again, that's a tautology.

;)

I'll take it one step further...nothing beats fresh, home roasted, beans!

Not THAT'S coffee snobbery!!!

I have to agree...that instant crap I used to drink is a thing of the past big time...can't drink coffee at present, but I wouldn't want anything other than my own fresh ground beans....The difference is simply amazing.

Leave it to you to take it to the next level...:p

One of these days (after any number of life conditions are met), I'm going to go that route!

I bow to no man in my totally demented espresso insanity!

When the time comes, you'll find roasting a complex, but wonderful experience. And the beans can't be fresher!! You get incredibly spoiled when you have the freshest beans possible.

Note to SBG: Do not read the post above, I used the "F" word!!:p

Cost ... are not issues.

Had to think about you while seeing this:

Theres an idea for a roaster....

One of those enormous electro magnets that can levitate objects with a single bean being fed into it at a time with scales and sensors to measure exact weight, water content, etc. Then one bean at a time could be roasted to the exact same standard while the bean levitates and spins freely in the air.

This way there would be no differences in a batch due to bean size or beans that have been on the outside of the bag while being shipped rather than the middle, you could have complete consistency, a slightly smaller bean could be roasted for slightly less time than a larger one.

Obviously then you'd need to design an atmosphere controlled chamber packed with sensors to outgas and age the beans to the perfect level.

Then get a WBC champion in to make the coffee and you have your $500000 cup.

OK...you definitely win the Most Incredibly Amazing And Scientifically Insane Roasting Process Award.

Sir, I bow humbly before your creativity!!!

Now for stage 2 of the plan. Win lotto and get it built.

I would fund it myself if I could! Then again, I would pay my mortgage payment if I could.

You could go for Gov't funding. There must be some way to twist it into a weapon, thereby justifying DOD funding. Or perhaps find a private source of funding among the truly and deeply demented in the coffee freak community.

Anyway, if you get it built...pictures, please!

Great idea.

I can just see it...

GOAL: 10 Billion Dollars.

Sponsorship starts at $1,000,000. That get you a "Thank You" mention award...

Love to see it!

I'll contribute the first $20. We're well on our way now! :D

Sorry, minimum sponsorship contribution is $1,000,000.:(

But if you happen to have that minimum amount lying about the house, I will PM to arrange that large loan I need.:p

Wait while I check under the couch cushions...

It would of course have to be built deep underground to block any radiation that might effect the flavour.

I could pitch it to David Cameron that the coffee would be so good that other governments would do anything for one cup.

I knew there must be a way to squeeze it out of the Gov't. I forgot you were over there...better out of your Gov't's budget than mine.

BTW...lucky thing this is a serious discussion about roasting coffee, or we might be a tad OT!!

sounds great, but you'll need some kick-ass magnets for that (either very, very large, or very, very powerful; preferably both :p )
