There are reports of GTX 1070 FE working in Mac Pro 5,1. Personally running a GTX 1080 FE without issues in a 5,1.

If you're going with one of those cards (or one with an 8-pin power requirement), you'll need a dual mini 6-pin to standard 8-pin cable to power. Many available, but know for sure this one works:

Sticky thread has all setup & install info.

Thank you.

Edit: Except that its front page introduction appears way out of date. And I have to read 179 pages of technical fix its. The Intro pages recommends a GTX 570 or GTX 680. Hmm ...

Might be easier to buy a PC for game play (driver sim actually) rather than put a decent GPU into my Mac Pro 5.1. I would have liked more oomph for video editing though. Darn its tough with Apple.

Maybe if I run windoze on my MacBook Pro 2017 with its 2.9Mhz i7 and its Radeon Pro 560:
Bus: PCIe; PCIe Lane Width: x8; VRAM (Total): 4096 MB
Vendor: ATI (0x1002); Device ID: 0x67ef; Revision ID: 0x00c0; ROM Revision: 113-C980AJ-927
Automatic Graphics Switching: Supported; gMux Version: 4.0.29 [3.2.8]; EFI Driver Version: 01.00.927
Metal: Supported

How would that compare to my Mac Pro with a 970 or 1070 card in it, runnings Windoze and playing a driving Sim?

The Mac Pro should be way faster than the MacBook Pro with the 1070. But that’s depends on settings. The cMP will work better at higher resolution, but MacBook pro may be faster at extremely low resolution and low setting.

That FAQ very clearly states that I'm not going to bother keeping an up-to-date list of what GPUs you should buy. All NVIDIA GPUs will work now, so just pick a modern one that you can afford.

It is recommended to stick with a X70/XX70 or X80/XX80 card for the most compatibility moving forward. For best driver compatibility on Mac side, would recommend getting a Founders Edition card (made by NVIDIA themselves) or as close to a reference card/design as possible.

Search this forum. There are MANY current threads discussing these same recommendations.
