I am currently using the iPhone 15 Pro Max and had initially intended to upgrade to the 17 Pro Max. However, my interest diminished after reviewing the reported design changes—specifically, the rear panel implementation. The visible tonal variation around the battery area gives the impression of an inconsistent material finish, which detracts from the otherwise premium industrial design.

Based on recent speculation, the 18 Pro Max may address these design shortcomings with a more refined rear panel construction. Additionally, there are indications of more substantive hardware advancements, including a reduced Dynamic Island footprint and the potential introduction of a variable aperture system for the primary camera. If accurate, these changes would represent a more meaningful step forward, both in terms of aesthetics and imaging capability.

Given this context, I am evaluating whether it is more prudent to defer upgrading and wait for the 18 Pro Max, rather than proceeding with the 17 Pro Max. I would be interested in perspectives on whether the anticipated improvements justify extending the upgrade cycle by another generation.

I’m waiting now for 20, I went 15PM to 17PM and honestly don’t feel much difference.
That’s helpful to hear, and it’s exactly the kind of hesitation I’m dealing with. I’m still on the 15 Pro Max, and while the 17 Pro Max does bring some notable upgrades—like the higher zoom capability, a larger battery, and improvements to the front-facing camera—it still seems like a largely incremental update in terms of everyday experience.

In particular, the expected enhancements to the front camera (likely in terms of sensor quality and overall imaging performance rather than just resolution) are appealing, but not necessarily enough on their own to justify the upgrade for me.

When I combine that with the design concerns I mentioned earlier around the rear panel, it makes the decision less straightforward. At this point, I’m leaning toward waiting for the 18 Pro Max to see if it delivers a more meaningful jump both in design refinement and overall hardware.

I have both the 15 Pro Max and 15 Pro and have been okay using these devices, even upgraded the iOS to iOS27. I also got my Deep Blue 17 Pro back in December and will say at this point wait for the 18 Pro/18 Pro Max to come out. Don’t consider upgrading until then.

how does the in-hand feel and overall perceived quality compare when going from the titanium models to aluminum ones? Does it feel like a noticeable downgrade or not something you really notice day-to-day?

The 17 Pro has the updated tech and improved front and rear camera setup but I have found that, for me, I still prefer the look and feel of my 15 Pro series iPhone.

It does not take much to dent or scratch the softer aluminum unibody frame of the 17 Pro series iPhone and they look and feel like a brick to me in comparison and as a result my 17 Pro has spent more time in my iPhone collection than it has actually being used. I took mine out last night to update iOS27 on it and it only has 14 charge cycles on it since I have received mine in early December.

I have more or less been using my 15 Pro as my daily iPhone since February. Regarding my 15 Pro Max . . . I have been comparing my 17 Pro to my 15 Pro and the difference in look and feel is evident. I can only surmise that comparing the 15 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max will be no different except the 17 PM would weigh significantly more due to it’s larger size. At this point I don’t fancy carrying a literal brick that, when dropped, will easily dent or scratch the colored finish. I still prefer not having to worry about dropping my iPhone for fear of creating a dent or scratch on it. For me the 15 & 16 series iPhones are the ones to get right now.

Expensive, premium devices like the iPhone Pro Max are much like fine jewellery—beautiful, valuable, and surprisingly vulnerable without proper care. No matter how tough the build quality or materials claim to be, using them without a case or tempered glass leaves them exposed to damage.

I learned this the hard way over a decade ago when I bought my Nokia Lumia. At the time, I was quite casual about protection—I trusted Gorilla Glass to live up to its name and didn’t bother with a screen guard. One day, my toddler niece accidentally smacked it onto the floor. While the phone didn’t suffer any major damage, I later noticed a few micro-scratches on the screen. They were barely visible, but it still bothered me.

That experience changed my mindset completely. Ever since then, I’ve made it a rule to always use a case and tempered glass protection for my smartphones—no matter how durable they claim to be.

Based on my upgrade timing evaluation, it still makes sense to hold off — but I’ve got to admit, that cherry color is incredibly tempting. Apple really knows how to make aesthetics mess with otherwise logical upgrade decisions.

Not gonna lie, everything else aside — that cherry finish looks gorgeous. If the final design looks anything like the renders, it might be one of Apple’s best color options yet.

At this point in time, I think you’d be better off waiting for the 18 Pro Max, the 15 Pro Max is clearly still serving you well and I imagine it will easily serve you well for a few more months, we are already in late June, in about 3 months the 18 will be announced and launched.

The ONLY reason I would recommend getting a 17 Pro Max now is if you are price sensitive want to avoid the rumoured price hikes the 18 series will get due to the whole RAM pricing spike situation, if a $150-$300 price hike won’t affect you then rather wait, we are not even sure if how much price hikes will affect certain storage variants.

Yep the differences are not huge, I like all that the 17 PM brought compared to my 15 PM; I am loving the larger screen, better telephoto camera, significantly better battery life and the design IMO is great, it really dissipates heat so much better it is very rare to find my 17 PM warm, but an iPhone is an iPhone, and when we are just 3 months away it is better to wait for 18.

IF the 18 Pros come with 16GB RAM it will be an even bigger upgrade as it will mean more exclusive Apple Intelligence features for them.

I'm stuck with a similar problem. Currently using an old SE as my 16 Pro was smashed to bits after driving off with it on the roof of my car, and as much as I love this phone, it's just not working out.

On one hand, I need a new phone so technically I should just get the 17 Pro. On the other, I'm really not a fan of the colours/look of the 17 Pro and I'd hate it if the 18 Pro came in my favourite colour of all time -- light blue! Talk about bad timing.

I just purchased the iPhone 17 PM. Coming from an iPhone 15 PM. Based on the price hikes that Apple just implemented, it sounds like the 18 PM will be ~$200 more than last year’s model. Add to that, my trade in offer will likely drop by $100 by the time the 18 PM launches and the 18 PM would likely cost me ~$300 more - or, $709 for the 17 PM after trade in vs ~$1000 for the 18 PM after trade in - for a few small spec bump features that just aren’t worth that much more to me.

My battery life on the 15 PM was down to 82% after only 429 cycles. Yeah, it gets hot from time to time. The larger screen, improved battery life and better cooling will be nice.

The 15 PM is the best PM recent years if you are a PM user like me. because its lighter , screen size 6.7 is a sweet spot

I am currently on the same and my next switch is definitely to a 6.3 regular pro

Recent PMs : (Last 5 years)
13 PM : Great phone with great battery at that time but it was too bulky to handle with 240 gms
14 PM : same 240 gms , too bulky to handle
15 PM : Lighter with 221 gms (it felt like i moved from a PM to regular Pro when i made a move from 13 pm to 15 pm )
16 PM: started getting bulker again 228 gms
17 PM : Again feels like a brick with 233 gms
18 PM : Surely going to increase again

so if you are a PM user i suggest you to stick with 15 PM for one more year if you are not a heavy user. See what the iphone 20 has to offer and move to a 20 regular pro version (based on rumors, a huge design change is on the cards for iphone 20)

Thanks but I am a big screen fan. So if I wait for one more year, its still going to be PM. Wight is not an issue, but $300 price hike will hurt my wallet

yeah the 18 pro max may start at 1500$ so you have to consider getting the 17PM now and just using it for a while or like others have said wait for the major redesign next year. honestly the only phone worth it this year is the Fold/Ultra and thats if you even want a folding phone as that is going to be the only big change this year
