Steve Jobs made plenty of mistakes while at Apple in the 80s, outside of Apple and with Apple from 1997 onwards.

The most egregious was allowing Eric Schmidt to sit on the board of Apple…

Brutal truth? Steve Jobs was a great salesman who got lucky.

I agree. I do not care about the headphone jack. But I do think if he was here Apple would have made much more intuitive and better products. And there would be a lot less people complaining on this site that the recent products have not been up to Apples standards.

This is of course my opinion.

Apple didn't start go downhill until 2015, when they started ignoring the Mac from both a hardware and software POV, and blindly thought that the iPhone was made with unicorn dust and would sell no matter what. And Jobs had nothing to do with that.

Fortunately their income is also reflecting that now, so perhaps Cook might actually manage to realize what dumb **** he is doing and turn the ship around.

For some mind blowing reason, Cook seems to think that services, which is what Apple is worst at (!), is the future for Apple.

I never wrote anything about them not being a Mac company? In fact, that moment you refer to is the moment that saved the Mac for the next 15 years.

Don't fully agree, I mean yes also in my eyes Apple is releasing uninspiring products and such, but that is just in the last 2/3 years.

Retina MacBook came after Jobs, and they are awesome, the New MacPro came after and it is a marvel (if only they updated it) the iPhone 6 was a hit and a great product (but stayed with us too long ....2016 should have been a new design and more feature), the Apple Watch is a good product, it is more the wearables that isn't soaring.

Steve made some wrong turns as well, but it kept Apple on its toes, in this last 2/3 years Apple has been resting too much.

I moved to Android, something I would have never bet a cent on, and was very surprised, I can do much more for less money, and actually don't miss a thing! Had you asked me 2 years ago I would have asked you if you were nuts.

EDIT:
Steve would probably have removed the HP jack himself, but at least he would have kept it consistent and removed it from the MacBook as well....showing that the path is clear and the jack had to go all the way not 50%.

Well, 1976 Apple started the transition towards 2017 Apple.. I'd say 2011 Apple had more in common with 2001 Apple than 2017 Apple, but that's of course a personal view.

Yes, but those were not viable products. I think the Newton actually ultimately lost money.
Also they were aimed at a different audiences, the iPod went straight for the hip & young, the Newton... not as much.

The iPod, however, showed Apple they could make money and thrive on gadgets.

I was just stating the truth...He might have became a VP later but he has been head of the design team from 1996.

Out of curiosity, not that I don't believe it, but do you have a source for that?

Anyway, the 1997 Power Mac 7300 is aesthetically identical to the 1995 PowerMac 7100; same goes for the 1995 PB 5300 and the 1998 PB 3400c. So did the original (pre-Wallstreet) Powerbook G3, which had almost the same exact case as the 3400c.

I would there guess the first Mac that was entirely the brainchild of Ive as the head of design was - perhaps alongside some Newtons - the 1998 iMac or something.

And that, I don't like.

Note that I'm not saying Ive is incompetent or couldn't design a minimal, black plastic notebook if asked - it's the newer designs themselves I dislike.

Ok, so now you have the opportunity to do something about this. Now you can focus your resources on finding alternatives to the Apple products which no longer meet your needs.

Same except I moved to Android about 5+ years ago and made it my mainstay by 2013. I realized I don't want an ecosystem with just one company. We need different paths. So here I am using Android for mobile and OS X for desktop computing. Android File Transfer is actually much faster to me than syncing and backing up on iTunes with an iDevice on any PC including a Mac. And pre-2016 MacBooks still offered an SD slot.

I wouldn't say Apple went downhill as they showed record numbers up until 2015. But with innovation? Hasn't happened since Steve was alive. I thought the Steve Jobs' Apple era peaked between 2004-2011 until his death. We can say Apple started to rebound with the iMac and Think Different campaign in 1997 and the birth of iPod in 2001 with the help of iTunes creating this ecosystem born in 1998. But I think Apple really started to hit mainstream by the time iTunes was compatible to Windows in 2003 and the release of the iPod mini in 2004. People forget how expensive those early iPods were at $400+. The iPod was the first device at a consumer friendly price for a gadget coming from Apple for under $249 and with hypnotic marketing and packaging.

Imagine people used to pay $249 for a 4gb mp3 player with no removable battery, no storage expansion, and no FM radio just 13 years ago? It also needed iTunes to organize media files as it lacked a file/folder system that couldn't be recognized by any computer when synced. This would set the stage on what the iPhones and iPads would become. Yet, the 2008/early 2009 unibody MacBook Pro had a latch underneath which made battery replacement very easy. It was short-lived but Steve Jobs was still alive in 2008 and an iDevices never had a feature like that. Post-2011, Apple became generally an iDevice company. Tim Cook is a bean counter. Nothing more, nothing less.

I've always thought it it a terrible example of form-over-function (and what an eyesore of a form) - I didn't even know it was Jony's first own design.

(I'm not, not trolling, I swear. I've been hating the TAM with a passion for nearly 20 years now.)

In fact I would have guessed that whoever had came up with that monstrosity would never be let come close to a pencil again.
