I feel like it’ll be like these but the big snood-like buckle will cover the ugly bump and then the whole thing will be so streamlined and magnetized that the two layers that overlap won’t be so bulky looking. Basically Apple will hide everything with magnets and thinness.

And it feels like it’ll be the Trail Loop fabric?

Thanks for the picture ... that looks very „third-party indeed“ to me; will be interesting to see how much slicker Apple can make this type of thing look. Trail Loop fabric would be a great way to start, I guess. I love how thin, yet soft those are.

I’m just very sold on this thing of “fully magnetic fabric” I’ve invented hahaha

A much clearer look at the silicone from Majin Bu…the green is depressingly familiar Eucalyptus/Pine/Olive-23’ vibes, no yellow tones like I was getting from the fuzzy product marketing-type image he posted:

Could it be that they’re throwing in the towel on the BSL because of the stretching?
I don’t even mind the stretching - the BSL’s real weakness is, especially for lighter colours, it will attract a permanent layer of dirt, darkening it and making it look a bit grubby. Fine if it cost the same as a Sport Band - but not if it costs over double

On similar lines the very firey colors can diminish from very light use or necessary cleaning. But I guess the same is true of sport loops, we just haven’t gotten many neon ones like Bright Green or Flamingo…

I don’t know about permanent dirt being unavoidable but certainly the many crevices and surfaces of the weave love soil.

Hi Gang! This is my first post in this thread. I have looked at almost every page and have been inspired by all of you who post regularly in this thread, and also the Show Off thread.

Nice yoink! Pretty jealous of people finding Canada and Mexico at TJ. Mine only had USA.

Had to pay double that for my Canada… and then some!

Oh yeah! I am so excited! I watch most games. I missed last night's no-hitter though...
I like watching the games the next morning/afternoon but my dodger fan friend couldn’t help but tell me as it ended. Can’t wait for another playoff run, I wore my Azure sport band religiously on game days.

Apple may be changing the band connector with the Apple Watch Series 10 (or X?) since it apparently takes up a lot of space that can be used for a bigger battery instead. Hopefully they’ll also introduce an adapter to make it backwards compatible with existing bands if they do change the band connector. I’ll probably stop buying any new bands for now until the Series 10/X comes out next year.

Doubtful. The fact that Apple just released not one, not two, but three new styles last year (and supposedly another new style coming in just a month) gives the strong impression that the connector isn't going anywhere.

Also, I don't care how strong the magnet is, I don't trust a magnet to hold my band to my watch.

Interesting … but I don‘t buy it either. I mean, I’m sure they’re experimenting with many things working towards an eventual re-design but I can‘t imagine a magnetic system (or any other) would save a lot of space as the existing connector already seems pretty minimal. Also the security aspect is doubtful as mike said. Plus so many new band styles for the „old“ connector. Plus they explicitely stressed in the Ultra launch interviews that they know how important compatibility with older bands is for many Watch users.

Gurman doesn’t let design logic get in the way of selling more Bloomberg terminals. One definitely needs to learn to find the dividing line between the intel he’s reporting and the analytical flights of fancy. Also why not both, there could be new magnetic affordances that don’t hurt the legacy connection.

Also random afterthought: could he be mining random old apple patents to pad out the article?

A probable prospect is the introduction of a magnetised smart connector mechanism within the attachment cavity of the watch, probably where the old diagnostic port once stood, that could allow for interfacing between the watch and future "smart bands" to enable blood pressure monitoring or some other feature set that might require electronics contained within the watch band to function. This would retain backwards compatibility with previously released bands as the physical connection mechanism would remain fundamentally unaltered. Recall that the Apple Pencil attaches magnetically to the surface of iPads to charge -- the magnetic attachment bit is incidental to the interfacing process ie. the power draw from the iPad to the Watch via inductive charging.

Maybe this what the magnetic bit in Gurman's rumour is all about. The port will continue to take "dumb" and "smart" bands, but it will contain electronics and a magnetic attachment portal to interface with the latter category to power them and enable new features.

This then begs the question: If Gurman's brand of journalism is speculative in nature, why not explore this prospect? Perhaps I should be the one doing his job.

Also the % of things Apple tries out that don’t make it to launch…
