Watch faces always show 10:09 before switching to correct time. This is annoying and intolerable for an expensive product. Rolex or Seiko wouldn't force 10:09 on owners before updating to current time. Apparently 10:09 is used in marketing as it is aesthetically pleasing for visuals. Apple needs to neuter their marketing ****s.

You mean when you first select or change the face? For some momentary period? I certainly haven't noticed it at all.

Rolex or seiko don't allow watch face changes at all, so if you want a comparable experience just pick one face (suggest: modular) and carry on with life?

edit:
Oh, it's before you even select the face, as a preview of what it looks like and it updates within half a second once you select the face. Is that really worth complaining about?

Flip side, on analog faces, the hands in that position enables you to easily see the included complications without obstruction.

10:10 is the standard time used in marketing across the watch industry for visuals. Whether it is 10:09, I don't think it matters and I don't really understand what the problem is here tbh.

Or maybe the currently inactive watch faces stay on 10:09 until becoming active in order to save precious battery life …

This is such a non-issue I’m genuinely surprised this thread exists.
For the record, 9:41 on iOS and 10:09 on watchOS is the time when the first generation of such product category was introduced Back then. You can’t change it and virtually No one will pay any attention to it.
TLDR, get over it.

Exactly when do you see this? When you change the watch face or whenever you look at the time?

Wasn't there a bug where it would display momentarily while on AOD mode? I know S4 doesn't have AOD but it might be related.

Reboot the watch?

When you press on the screen to change the watch face, all the faces default to 10:09 until you pick the face you want. Such a non issue, definitely wasteland material

Yes, I know that. I’m trying to determine if thats what the OP means as their post is completely non-specific.

What exactly are you talking about? When do you see the time as 10:09 incorrectly so regularly that you'd need to post an angry thread about it? This feels like a software bug.

I also hate this “feature”. Analog, static image yes the hands frame the face nicely.

Digital face saying 10:09? Pointless.

The 10:09 time displayed did not occur when switching watch faces 2 or 3 watchOS ago. Apple changed the implementation, probably something like fetch default watch face first then update info, instead of updating all watch faces in the background.

I’m pretty sure mine have always done this.

True, and I also noticed that starting with WatchOS 11, the steps counter (pedometer) will sometimes show 0 steps, then jump to the number I've actually walked. Not every time I check, but sporadically during my Outdoor Walk workout. Things like this aren't an impediment to functionality, but rather a lapse in refinement that seemed to happen far less frequently in the days when Steve Jobs was at the helm.

Since posting the OP I've seen there is a huge discussion over at the Apple forums that mirrors this thread exactly...

You mean when you first select or change the face? For some momentary period? I certainly haven't noticed it at all.

Rolex or seiko don't allow watch face changes at all, so if you want a comparable experience just pick one face (suggest: modular) and carry on with life?
...when changing the face from one to another, this is important because I use 3 or 4 faces during the day, depending on the situation, a simple analogue one for driving and sailing for example, one with certain complications for one environment, another with other complications for another reason, etc.
Exactly when do you see this? When you change the watch face or whenever you look at the time?
...when changing the face from one to another.

When changing the face, the watch momentarily tells me the wrong time, its counterintuitive.

My point about Rolex or Seiko is that Apple is a premium brand and judging by the thread over at Apple they've upset a large proportion of the owners of these expensive watches. Rolex and Seiko would no doubt seek to avoid this at all costs.

This must have been done this deliberately for "reasons" tech or marketing or maybe it's a bug.

Imagine opening a book and having it display the wrong words momentarily. !!! a new "feature" for the books app?

As one who has survived a major stroke and also had brain surgery for metastatic cancer, I do not need reality appearing to differ, even for half a second when it did not do so, prior to Watch OS 10.

Now I understand that it's not just my watch, I'm OK with it going forward, but I think it's wrong for a brand that values excellence.

If any Apple folk are reading this, if this is such a good idea on the watch, why not the iPhones and iPads and laptops and desktops? make 'em all display 10:09 momentarily when a time is displayed....

It started when Apple changed the way to switch watch faces from swiping to requiring a long press (which the former got added back).
Thank you, now it makes sense, but still annoying if I want to use the swipe method, it is somewhat understandable using the long press.

It just goes to show that when there's a OS upgrade, one is expected to pore over the release notes to acquaint one's self with new "features" that are not readily obvious.

I'm a user that want's a watch that "just works"

Thanks, this makes sense!

I have the same issue as the OP & while I wouldn't have described the issue as forcefully, it is odd. I notice it on the time, and also it used to happen on the weather app (I switched to another app that doens't have the issue so not sure if it's still going on or not) where it would always say 73 degrees IIRC. It also happens on one of the third-party complications I have which tells the upcoming Civil Dusk or Dawn, it always displays Civil Dusk @ 5:57 PM, and then will updates in a few second.

Good to finally have a reason for why it happens.
