Because most laptops will run out of juice (and slower) before the work day is over?
That and the fact that most of the time people use laptops in the settings where there is power outlet anyways. How many people do you see using laptops outdoors? Almost never. And while indoors, why not to use power outlet? Buying energy sipping (and underpowered) laptop and using it in the office is just not that smart.

Well, I would prefer to never worry about plugging in when I work with my work assigned laptop. But the fear of running out of juice is such that the first think I look for when I go to any meetings with my notebook is to look for a power outlet.

I manages projects so I travel a fair bit (used to before the pandemic) to customer sites. And even at work, I have to go to meetings with colleagues in meeting rooms. My computing needs are light but Intel based notebooks are bad at running unplugged. It can be quite liberating (to me at least) if I can go to meetings without lugging along the power brick.

I’m an author, and I use word processors, spreadsheets, photoshop, page layout software and about 50 billion open tabs for research. My (quite) old MB Pro wouldn’t last more than 3 hours. Being able to go places and not stress about needing to plug in is going to be magic. I’m even loving the possibility of doing some video editing while out and about. And some outdoor work sounds fantastic.

That depends on how much you move around for your work. A few years ago I spent a lot of time travelling to meetings, sitting in meeting rooms without close access to a power outlet, in airports, in planes, in coffee shops & restaurants, in taxis, in conference halls....all stuff that needs unplugged battery life.

For a lot of people, having decent battery life is a huge benefit. Being chained to your power supply is a huge inconvenience.

At home I use a desktop. If sitting at a desk in an office, I'll plug in a laptop (and use an external screen and network cable if available). Everywhere else, I want good battery life.

Pre-covid, I traveled for a living. Overseas 2x a month + lots of domestic trips. I was almost always in range of a power outlet personally:
  • Home office (outlet)
  • Airport Lounge (outlet)
  • Plane (outlet)
  • Hotel (Outlet)
  • Conference room (usually outlets or the damned conference room recessed ones). I took a 6 inch extension cord for these as many didn't allow my small gan PD adapter to fit in.
  • Client site (outlet)

So while having good battery is nice for when I'm too lazy to plug in (or occasionally working on a deck while ubering to the airport)... 6-8 hours is plenty for me. I prefer raw computing power over battery efficiency.

Now weight... that is significant for me. I was waffling between M1 MBA and the new 14 inch MBP mainly on the issue of weight. I carry everything with me for 1 day to 1 month trips in a single 26L backpack... so weight is a biggie for me.

You must have travelled in more style than my employer (super-rich Oracle Corp) was prepared to pay. No lounges or airplane seats with power sockets for me.....

I found that I used my laptop unplugged for a lot of the time, either because there wasn't a power socket (coffee meetings) or because it gave an unprofessional impression to be crawling under customers' meeting room tables looking for power :)

Yes, phone chips are more power efficient
what phones use over 50W SoC ? are you a gamer windows user that cant even understand tech and comes here just to troll with his "vast tech knowledge "?
I think this use can be ignored

And then there’s things like video editing where these chips really shine:

no no because falainber says that these M1 pro and M1 max are phones chips..please some respect
Or are you saying that an iphone chip is better than an desktop chip from companies like Intel and amd that are doing desktop/laptop chips like , forever ?!
Apple outplayed Intel and Amd in their own game :D and falainber cant acknowledge this

Apple did not simply outplay Intel and AMD and their own game.....

They started an entire new game of their own that Intel and AMD can't join. Apple just became the Mob Boss of their own destiny.

(Intel's CEO has publicly stated that he want's to "win back" Apple's business) Google it.

hahaha....neeh, they will join sooner than later because they cant drag this x86 arhitecture too long (of course they will never leave behind x86 in our life time), and every other company is addicted to apple
the issue is that they cant join Apple in the fully control of the overall product...they cant reach full potential of the software+hardware integration
Only Microsoft could do that if they start to design their own SoC for their own surface products

When Apple had to buy the same hardware as everyone else in the PC world, then the only way they could distinguish themselves was build quality and thinness and sexiness. They could not really make a Pro model without tuning it into a clunky alienware. THIS IS THE OLD PARADIGM.
I guess what you're saying is that with ARM being hot can be cool. But for Intel chips, being hot mean being sterile.

Even then, Microsoft shot themselves in the foot with windows mobile phones.

Not ONE company can touch Apple since the move to their own SOC's. Apple has full Hardware and Software integration designed In-house for all their product offerings.

Samsung isn't there yet, neither is Huawei. I'm not sure any company can do it at present moment ( top to bottom hardware + software to create the "ecosystem")

AMD and Intel? You're no longer welcome in Apple's products.

Apple has designed its "walled garden" in such a masterful way its not even funny.

Apple can control every aspect of its products and delivers the best "ALL AROUND" experience.

(NOT COMPLETE EXPERIENCE OR IN ANY SPECIFIC 1 thing...gamers....)

Their ability to deliver a consistent experience across all their devices ALMOST flawlessly is unmatched by anyone on the market. PERIOD.

I work for one of the Big4. They treat us quite well. Any international trips are business class, and they pay for an airline lounge membership. Plus with all spend on air travel, many of us get invited into our Airline of choice's "invite only" tier which comes with lots of perks (like upgrades to first on many domestic flights). United Global Services in my case.

for me I don't use a laptop to achieve 10's of hours on battery, I use a laptop as a mobile workstation that I take to various locations and plug it in. I'd argue that this is probably the most common usage for a laptop (or portable as SJ called them)
I actually use mine on my lap sitting on a couch mostly. Altho at the moment its plugged in at a table, but only because its a 2013 with the original battery that only gives me about 60 minutes anymore.

Of course INTEL wants to win back Apple's business... Motorola would have loved to as well. More customers = more money. Will losing Apple's business, kill them? No. Plenty of PCs out there needing chips. INTEL just lost a side gig, that's all.

A case in point: https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/as...-the-m1-macbook-pro-killer?comment=7765016119

I have no idea who made that comment. But the point is simple: The PC world can brute force marginally better performance, but battery life goes through the floor. Once again, I’ll wonder what happens when Apple produces one of these processors that will take the kind of leccy only a Bitcoin miner would steal.

Sounds nice :) Fortunately, I now almost never have to travel to work, and can't say I miss the life spent at airports and hotels, however luxurious they are. Business travel policy does appear to vary a lot depending on industry; I have a friend in financial services who always flew business class, and didn't quite appreciate how tiring (and trying) flying "cattle-class" can be.

I think maybe a lot of people will reconsider the need for business travel after the pandemic. Maybe for kick-off meetings, but it's been demonstrated that a lot of work can be done quite effectively remotely.
