As the title says, I'm an iPhone 4S owner who soon will become an "ex - iPhone owner". I just want to change OS 'cause I need some fresh air.
Anyway, I don't know which Android phone should I choose.
Obviously, the choice is between the HTC One and the Galaxy S4. I've already "deleted" the Nexus 4's choice.
I'll use the phone.. well, to do "normal" things, such as web surfing, photos (I like, sometimes, to use my phone as a camera, especially when I'm abroad), social networking and stuff related to university.
So.. Thank you! :D

People may squabble about the differences in specs between them, but whats probably most important is the cell provider, their coverage and data network, and the deal you can get on said phone.

The best thing to do would be to hit the showroom and give both a good solid demo. Go with the one that gives you the best impression.

I would suggest going to your carrier and playing around with the phones first. I feel like people either love or hate touchwiz.

OP, both are amazing devices. I agree with others that say to go check them both out in person before making a decision. I will say this, however...

If the camera is a huge deal to you, then the S4 is the way to go. I've got the One and while the camera is acceptable for what it is, it doesn't hold a candle to the S4 camera (especially if you're looking to replace a point-and-shoot).

Go cry me a river.

He asked which phones are good and listed two options and I said they're both the best right now.

And yes, the Nexus 4 is such an overrated and terrible device in my opinion.

Fixed that for you.

And wow, your knowledge of mobile tech is astounding! The OP lists the two newest flagship phones as ones he's interested in and your only comment is that they're both the best right now. That's some hard-hitting knowledge you've got there! How did you ever come up with such insightful commentary?

Maybe you should try being a little more constructive with your posts and a little less abrasive and people might start to take you seriously.

How important is the camera to you? The HTC One does do better lowlight ones than the S4, which can often be apallingly average in that regard, but the 4MP means that you cant blow up the pictures much on a bigger screen. The S4 takes great outdoors shots in sunlight, plus the higher MP count means they'll come out great printed larger. Being able to store them on an SD card if you wish could also come in handy. Personally I hate the touchwiz skin on the S4 (Some people like it) so I got rid of it.

If you don't mind waiting a couple of more weeks, and have AT&T and Tmobile you could get the S4 or HTC One google experience phones. They are kind of pricy at $599 for the One and $629 or something like that for the S4, but you are getting the great hardware with stock android. I am not sure if you like the stock android, but I thought it might give you something to think about.

If you want to go with a skinned android phone though. The S4 is good and touchwiz will hold your hand until you can get a hold of android and touchwiz. I am not a big fan of touchwiz, but others that are switching from iOS like how easy it is. IMO I think the HTC One is better. I like the big speakers on the front, and I like that the phone is made of aluminum. It comes down to what you like more, but you can go wrong with either, or the stock android ones.

Both are great phones and really it's swings and roundabouts as to where you stand.

Sense or Touchwiz.

In a way I think Sense 5 and the HTC One is more 'apple'esque' so the switch to Android whilst still very different - isn't quite so abrasive as Touchwiz presents on the S4. Simple things like settings layout on the HTC One is a lot easier to navigate than the settings menu on the S4 which has things broken into tabs and categories that defy explanation at times.

HTC's Sense 5 aesthetic is consistent throughout the device - dialler - calendar - music - notes - tasks etc.. all have a coherent design ethos / look.

Touchwiz is more vibrant and in your face - however many of its software elements have conflicting design (such as dialler being big squares and yet music app being small round buttons) it often feels like each of the phones sections had a different design team working off a different hymn sheet.

Cameras...

S4's camera is very good indeed and could indeed function as your standalone camera. It's that good.

The HTC One is a social snapper - its designed for those times when your out and about with friends in low light situations and where other phones would struggle it produces better results. Likewise its lower resolution makes it ideal for facebooking, twittering and tumblr. But for outdoors Landscape shots the lower resolution struggles to compete compared to the S4.

Both have features like 'action shot' and both are great for portraiture (family photos).

So if your social snapping in bars / restaurants / dinner parties or at night the HTC one is a great snapper. As long as your not planning on printing them out anything bigger than 10x8 you should be fine.

But If you want a camera for landscapes, seascapes and such in outdoor daylight the S4 produces better shots because of the increased resolution - it simply is able to capture more detail in that scenario.

Performance

For me they both are much of a muchness. Speed wise you'll find little difference in real world usage for most things. The S4 does have little micro-stutters here and there (despite the recent patch) but they are not deal breaking by any means and only really noticeable when doing certain things in the launcher (quickly swiping through widgets or such).

Battery life is likewise much of a muchness. For me the One had better battery life but not a huge deal better by any means. But others have posted the other way round (vice-versa) too, so I think in general terms you'll find same battery life.

Storage.

S4 - if you can get the 32GB you'd be better off than buying the 16GB especially if your futurproofing. Whilst you can add additional storage - you will only be able to install music / photos to the microSD and not Apps. Jellybean / Google decided to not allow installing of applications to microSD.

HTC One - comes with 32GB as standard, but of course lacks the microSD.

Currently I have 11gb of music on my One, 72 additional applications installed, and the OS etc... I have 12gb free. I don't think I'll ever need any additional storage - but others might want to carry more music around especially if they dont want to stream via spottily / google music or similar.

--------------

Both phones are excellent and it will come down to small differences that decide your preference. Really you should go to a store and just see if you can spend 20 minutes with each.

Either way you'll be buying a great handset no matter what :)

Are you a troll? All I do is see you post things completely irrelevant.

I agree completely with you. All negativity and constant arguing.

Back to the topic, the Nexus 4 isn't all that bad, spare the lack of an microSD slot and 1080p, which I don't care for.

I'd go for an HTC One, it seems the closest to an iPhone build-wise, and doesn't have as much bloat as the S4 (apparently the S4 only has 8GB of space free to the user w/the 16GB version)
Spec-wise most of the current Android flagships are the same, so its really up to build quality, software, and personal preference. I'd suggest demoing some phones before making a purchase.

EDIT: HTC One lacks a micro SD slot, take that into consideration. Although I don't believe you could install apps on it if it did have one.

What a joke. For which company am I a paid shill exactly?

Guess that's hard to say since you allegedly own an iPhone 5, a Galaxy S4, and an HTC One, and who knows which other ones. Am I missing any?

Like I said, post a pic of your iPhone 5 by my post, and i'll believe your claims. Otherwise, I gotta call BS. You're way too trolly to take seriously.

I'd say go with Galaxy S4. lack of expansion memory slot is a reason i don't recommend HTC One. also another minor reason is fixed battery. I don't like it. you can easily buy a 64GB memory card for ~$50 and have massive storage on your phone.

however both are great devices. I disagree with the other poster claiming Nexus 4 is trash. it's far from it. if budget is a concern, then get Nexus 4. (fixed battery, fixed memory but way cheap). it costs half of HTc one/Galaxy s4.

If budget is a concern, the Galaxy S3 might be a better bet. I've seen them on CL for ~$300-350.

If you want vanilla Android, Task650 makes a good ROM based off CM/AOKP. If not, tons of debloated TW roms. It has better RF performance, LTE, sd card, battery life, so on.

No reason to get the Nexus 4.

i'd prefer the htc one, really awesome phone. the s4 lags a lot.
you can also wait for the iOS7, which will offer everything new.
you should also consider the note 2 or the note 3(coming in july-aug) it's very useful for taking notes.

You said you post on your mobile. And especially on an android phone it would literally take less than 5 seconds to take the pic and post it.

I guess it doesn't matter for me since I already knew you were BS. Its a shame other people might be fooled into your false claims.

Really just go away. Why are you making this attack on the nexus 4? Have you ever used one? I am sure you are going to tell me you have since you have an iphone 5, HTC One, and S4.

If you knew anything about smartphones you would never compare the S3 to the nexus 4. That is just stupid. The nexus 4 runs circles around the S3, and anyone that knows anything about phones knows that. I am sorry, but I have to agree with anyone else. You are just a troll trying to get an argument started. Not going to happen because with the stupid statements you are making everyone knows you have no idea what you are talking about. Time for you to move along.

Good information all around MRU but i must correct you on this. Jellybean/Google does allows you to move a portion of the app to sdcard but it's also dependent on whether the developer has coded the app to perform this function. For example beach buggy blitz is 44mb but i can move a portion over to sdcard and be left with 2.2mb on phone storage.

Oh Niko, what have you done? :p

I'd personally go for the HTC One over the s4 as I like the design of the hardware better. With the rumours that HTC may be providing a solution to use the stock Google edition on other HTC One's, this increases my interest immensely.

The truth is, either of those phones will do you fine. Will you be getting an unlocked handset or a Italian network branded one?

If it has network branding that would put me off as branded phones normally lag behind update wise compared to the manufacturer updated SIM free editions. Coming from an iPhone you will be used to swift updates but be prepared to wait for Samsung or HTC to update theirs.

ex - iPhone 4S owner: which Android should I choose?

Thanks everybody!
I think that the best thing to do, right now, is to wait and see what Apple will bring with iOS 7.
If that doesn't wow me, than I'll switch.

The thing is: I love stock Android, but I'm in Italy, so Google versions won't arrive.
Anyway, the news that HTC will probably release an AOSP is wonderful!

I will, in all the cases, I'll pick an unlocked versions of the phone.

Other thing is that I really hate Touchwiz and all the bloatware Samsung puts inside the S4. And I love the design of the HTC.

I'm a lil confused, but, at least for now, I prefer the One.

Galaxy S4 if you like touchwiz, removable battery and expandable memory.

HTC One if you like Design, Sense and great speakers

Nexus 4 if you want speed, fast updates and a decently solid build.

All devices will have their own shortcomings and people will squabble about them until hell freezes over and then even longer after that. My recommendation is to try them and make your own decision. Those are arguable the 3 best phones out right now.

Aww, looks like I hit a soft spot?

Have you ever used one?

Yes, I was one of the first last year.

Why not try to refute my argument, instead of acting like I insulted your wife?

The S3 is better because:

LTE
Better battery life
Better screen (larger, more vivid)
Removable Battery
Better camera
SD Card slot
Better RF performance
Variety of ROMs (so many diff't AOKP and TW roms out there)

Just because it is Nexus device and is cheap, doesn't make it better. If you don't care to admit that, then fine. There's plenty of people out there that think it's such an overrated phone.

Ok wow I can't believe I have decided to even bother with you. You are such a waste of time.

LTE- does not matter if you are on Tmobile. Which the S3 does not have LTE on Tmobile either.

Better battery life- really that is fact? I can get 4+ screen time with my nexus 4. That is with Stock android no roms.

Better screen- I am not even going to bother with this because it is clear you have no idea what you are talking about. "More vivid" really that is what you are going with?

Removable battery- your preference. Not ever one needs that.

Better camera- sure if you think so.

SD slot- again your preference. A lot of people don't need it. I don't.

Better RF performance- ?

Variety of ROMs- you don't need those when you are running stock android. Oh wait I forgot you have that suck fest called touchwiz that you have cover up.

You forgot one thing processor- S3
1.5GHz dual-core compared to 1.5GHz quad-core. Sorry but with touchwiz and a dual core slowing the S3 down the nexus 4's quad core runs circles around the dual core.

And no you did not hit a soft spot. I expect people that post so much hatred for one device to be well educated. I am using an iPhone 5 at the moment. I switch between that and the nexus 4, so I am no loyalist to the nexus 4. You just have no idea what you are talking about. It is ok I expect it from someone like you.
