Now that the return windows are coming to an end, I’d like to see how many people are thinking of exchanging from 8GB to the 16GB RAM models of the iPad Pro. Has anybody made the switch or thinking of making the switch? How much of an impact do you feel having the 16GB of RAM will make?

Zero as iPad iOS apps are limited to 5gbs
Yup, which is pretty sad.

Of course this might change in the future, so I guess getting a 16GB could be a way of future-proofing.

This was kind of similar to the Apple TV 4 (HD) when it and tvOS first launched. Apple really crippled it in many ways back then, one being that the static storage size for apps was set at a ridiculous 200MB.

It was virtually impossible to fill the 32GB ATV4 at its launch, let alone the 64GB.

This has changed since once Apple backpedaled on the static storage size limit, raising it to 4GB. Now, the 64GB isn't big enough if you are an Apple Arcade fan.

16GB on an iPad would have a very limited use case (even if Pro apps are announced next week) and I’d guess not many would actually need it…

The problem is we don't know what they're going to do to make the difference in experience. If my return window was like tomorrow, I might exchange just to get a new window going before the event.

I don’t know if I’m just too logical, but why would anybody think Apple or any developer will optimize for devices with 16GB Ram?

In the universe of ALL iPad Pro users, it probably breaks down to 50% have 6GB Ram, 40% have 4GB of ram, 9% have 8GB of ram, and 1% have 16GB of ram.

Once you add the most recent iPad air users and you can forget about it.

So don’t worry, buy the storage you need.

Apple and developers will optimize for the 16GB iPad to the extent Apple allows. Otherwise Apple has no reason to sell the 16GB. Also, app developers can optimize for the 16GB without negatively impacting other iPads.

I’m arguing that there’s no reason they’d shift any resources into doing so because the ROI is so low. Take what you’re saying, expand out to previous years, did anybody notice a significant difference between the 4GB and 6GB ram configs in 2018?

The most likely explanation for why Apple sells the 16GB config is just upsell. There are so many “well i want ot future proof my machine” people out there. Just check the macbook forums.

By the way - all the power to the people buying 16GB configs, you got a great machine. I just think these threads trying to get people riled up about apple unlocking the power of 16GB therefore rendering their machine less than perfect is not sitting well with me.

Developers need to optimize for the lowest hardware.

With that said, I don't see why doing so automatically precludes enabling features or reducing constraints when the device has better hardware. For example, higher resolution/more layers in ProCreate or higher details and textures in games.

Safari runs on both an iPad Air 2 (A8X/2GB) and an iPad Pro 11" 3rd gen (M1/8-16GB). It runs much, much better on the latter than the former, though.

With that said, if I only needed 256GB storage, then I wouldn't spend $600 extra just to get 16GB RAM.

Wait until WWDC tomorrow. If MacOS then make mad dash to Apple store to exchange for 16GB otherwise just keep 8GB.
