I have the 16gb but I bought it just to get the 1 terabyte storage. I like to download my music, movies, and tv shows without having to worry about being connected to the internet for iCloud.

So put 8GB ones in everything. The storage is not part of the M1 SoC. So it’s not a case of “the 1TB/2TB storage M1 comes with 16GB RAM so we will just use that”
did you conveniently miss point 1 for better caching at higher capacity and half of point 2 for upsell?

Now that WWDC is over I guess it's easier to say now than before, but it's not that hard to draw conclusions. Just look at the iPad configuration screen. Do they mention ram anywhere? if it's truly for the pro market, why tie 16GB to 1TB versus offering it up at all storage configurations? WHy not mention 16GB Ram in the storage options?

Apple rarely surprises on software, the simplest explanation is the easiest to understand.

Looks like the 16gigs is solely for "flex purposes" now. What a stinker by Apple.

Like I said earlier, Apple knows that by advertising 16GB of RAM and only making it available on the 1TB and 2TB models that they would get some people to buy it because they think they need more RAM. There is zero reason for 16GB of RAM on an iPad.

To be fair, they are marketing it toward the Pro market segment. On the M1 SOC RAM is unified unlike on Intel devices. So the GPU frame buffer and RAM have to compete on M1 devices. Although normal programs may not need 16GB it could really come in handy for professional applications like video and photo editing…

Doing those on an iPad also line up with increased storage needs as you aren’t consumption focused which tends to be streamed onto the device…

There is room for a valid reason other than just pure up sell. I think the up sell bonus wasn’t loss on Apple Execs though.

Its just for upsell.

There is also the extra RAM available for graphic intensive applications due to the unified RAM nature of the M1.

I am very confused by the light weight iPadOS announcement though. I’m running the Developer Beta and still there is no additional information on the RAM or how it is to be managed. So I’m at a loss for explaining it. None of the new features appear to need it. With the extremely small updates in iPadOS I’d wager it will be hard to fully utilize the RAM even for dedicated professional workflows.

But I will admit I was off on the reading on this one.

Same! No M1 features. No revamped multitasking. Nothing really exciting for iPadOS in regards to the newest iPPs.

Your install didn't have a bootloop?

After today’s keynote nobody is impressed with those specs. I’m already seeing a few people mentioning that they wanted the 1TB models just for the storage. Keep telling yourselves that.

I was away during the install for personal reasons, but when I came back to my iPad an hour or so after I initiated the install it was installed and ready to go.

Some nice enhancements especially the expanded and revamped keyboard shortcuts.

Yeah, I’m trying to get accustomed to the new features.. keyboard shortcuts looks solid. The new multitasking features is going to take awhile to get familiar with, I think going forward Apple might have some plans with the center window on top of the SplitScreen.

I like the new Safari layout, that’s dope. App Library looks solid, won’t have to put all my apps into one folder. Can’t wait to see how developers take advantage of using bigger widgets for the iPad. I am leaning toward keeping the M1 iPP though…

There are also new pencil gestures and a lot of other little nuggets scattered around. Like finally bringing back the magnifier when highlighting text.

That's not the point. The point was that 16GB is complete overkill for the iPad. If it was at any point needed, Apple would allow people to customize the amount of RAM they can choose to have for any of the models just like they do with their Macs.

There isn't anything to be confused about. Apple is going to keep all of the iPads the same. They want them all on the same OS capable of running the same software and applications. The Pro models will always do things faster and have a couple of extra features (things like camera enhancements that no on cares about and a better screen) but that's really it.
