Exactly, which is why the whole issue is a tempest in a teapot. Personally, I have one MBP w/ a non-user replaceable battery and one w/ a replaceable batter. The former gives me a couple hours longer life before charge so I don't need to carry around an extra battery. That is exactly the point of the non-user replaceable batteries.

No exactly shocking news but cnet is reporting that apple will charge 100+ bucks to replace the battery and you'll need to send it in. that is why I hate non-user replaceable batteries. I'm sure some of us could live w/o an iPad for a week, but the same goes for the iPhone and MBPs. [/rant]

I almost always agree with your posts. This time, I am in total disagreement.

Replaceable batteries weight more and they add a lot of bulk. The battery itself must be encapulated in plastic... and then the cavity often is encapsulated as well. The estimates that I have seen is that it adds 40% to the bulk for the same ma/hr capacity.

My duaghter just changed the battery on her HP laptop. She paid $139. A replaceable batter just isn't cheaper most of the time.

I used to carry a 2nd battery for long international flights. I gave that up. I find that I cannot work longer than the life of my laptop battery anyway. My iPod classic lasts much longer than any flight I've ever been on... and the iPad will have enough life for most flights... especially if I work for a few hours on my laptop.
