Outside of its lack of graphics, exactly how is it awful?

Apple Mail is very reliable for the most part. It's some servers that aren't.

Mail.app should be a mature product by now. There were a lot of issues with Gmail with Mavericks until they ironed out the bugs.

Good luck configuring a Hotmail/Outlook.com account to work. One of the major e-mail providers on the planet and it still doesn't work properly with Mail.

The client itself is embarrassingly basic and lacks features. I don't expect it to be as feature rich as Outlook 2013 but I expect more than the minimalist approach taken by Apple with the app.

I don't understand why my e-mail arrives instantly on my iPhone but can take upto 5+ mins to arrive on my Mac. I also have to manually refresh to see some new emails in my inbox.

Unread/read e-mails do not always sync properly with other devices. It's only ever an issue with the Mac. I have a few Macs and they all have this issue.

My Gmail account is my primary mail account but I also have a Outlook account that I have to use a third party app to view my Outlook.com e-mail (Airmail) due to it not working with Mail.app.

It's a damn mess.

I actually agree that is IS awful... but further to my comment on the previous page, what is the alternative? I have a Gmail account and an IMAP account for my personal domain name. The closest that comes to Apple Mail in terms of features and ease of use is Postbox, but that has some annoying quirks and is not free.

I don't use those accounts, so unfortunately, I can't give you an opinion, but I do trust yours that there are issues. I solely use my iCloud and Gmail accounts with no issues.

100% in agreement with you on that. That is why I had such high hopes for Airmail, but my God, 2 years in beta and it still is unreliable. It's like the guys designing it have no idea how to perfect it. How could you have an email app in beta for two years?

I don't understand why my e-mail arrives instantly on my iPhone but can take upto 5+ mins to arrive on my Mac. I also have to manually refresh to see some new emails in my inbox.

I see that problem, depending on the connection. At home with my fast Fios connection, mail arrives pretty fast but in spurts. I get half of it immediately and the rest about 30 seconds later. On a slower connection at work, it does take up to a minute or two until it actually appears. There have been 3-4 minute waits at times. So, again, agreed.

Unread/read e-mails do not always sync properly with other devices. It's only ever an issue with the Mac. I have a few Macs and they all have this issue.

I don't have this issue on my end. Everything syncs fine, including (miraculously) to my Android email client.

Listen, I am with you on this. I am not a huge fan of Apple Mail but as far as everything else that is out there for this platform, it is the most reliable. And, yes, at times that may not be saying much.

Do appreciate you elaborating on the problems that you see.

Mail is tribble!

Mail was never perfect but since the last few updated my gmail world was turned up-side-down! At one point i LOST all my gmail all the way back to 2007. The spooky thing was that I could still fish some very random emails from random years but the bulk of it was gone and I am still walking around with my jaws dropped! tried to seek some help on several forums but everyone just agreed Maverick subataged gmail in a bad way and send their sympathy.
I am still shocked by the frantic behaviour of my mail/gmail relationship. Strange things happen all the time. For example I get multiply saves for drafts, basically every few words mail save a copy as draft and i get 100 saves per email..or searching for an email brings all the results as if they came from me while I was the receiver, not the sender. Lots of app activity in the background, bars of loading/downloading show constant computing processing (reflected by the endless copies mail generates for my messages..) Its extremely frustrating experience and very unreliable, feels messy and can't be trusted. Simply shocking they got away with that.
I am looking for the best way out and as quickly as possible. Any tips for the best client that will work with gmail best would be much appreciated.
as for iCloud... i just get fed up with apple more and more. As a die hard apple consumer that falls for their sexy products I am now considering alternatives on any front.. i piped into the samsung galaxy page the other day thinking - "**** it!"
