Glad to hear this problem is not just me. M1 MacBook Pro 13" It seems to be a USB-C only issue for me. I have a portable WD USB-C drive that also disconnects every night after I leave the computer for the night. I thought it might be a cable issue. I have tried 3, all same. If I connect it to my hub with a usb-c -> usb-a, it doesn't disconnect...only when connected directly with usb-c. Not sure if the is a symptom of the same issue, but I've been installing Steam and Battle.net games on the external drive. They run fine, but anytime I install something new, it seems to take 20-30 minutes to start the first time...eventually after a VERY long wait I get a security box asking if its ok for that software of access removable drives. Anyone know anyway to give them that permission myself before I try to run it the first time. I don't have the option in system preferences to add items to that list

@Nikelectric for me the problem happens for

Disk-->USBTypeA-->USBDongleHubWithPower-->USBTypeC-->MBP

So it seems like the problem can happen with USB Type A hub, or directly connected to with USB Type C

Glad I'm not the only one, I started experiencing this with 11.2. I've had no issues prior

... and macOS 11.2.2 did not fix the problem either, even though it addressed USB dongle issues. My Timemachine disk already broke (again, for the 10th? time), as Time Machine was backing up to it while the disk got automatically ejected.

This is unbearable Apple!

However previously mentioned program Jettison mostly prevents this problem.

I actually used my time machine to go back before this update. It breaks a lot of streaming sites using DisplayLink to my TV. They mostly worked fine before the update

I have the same problem.

Mac Mini M1, WD USB2 HDD, connected through a USB 3 Hub. MacOS 11.2.2

Woke up today to find my disk was incorrectly ejected 20x last night. I blame the power nap. and MacOS of course.

Lets not even start to talk about APFS and all these damned containers and convoluted partitioning structure... *headache* Poor SuperDuper...

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) with a Lacie 1TB connected via Firewire to USB-C adaptor began exhibiting this behavior as of my upgrade to Big Sur 11.2.3.

Have the basic model M1 Mac Mini 2020, with only 256GB. Bought the usb C base below to expand storage.
Was working just fine with the mac sleeping for a few weeks. Im not quite sure what update number broke it. But now, every time i forget to turn it off, or I'm absent for a long period of time, it goes into sleep mode, and get back to the message disk not ejected properly. Glad to hear i'm not the only one, but bummed there is no fix.

So you either eject it manually before you're away and it goes to sleep, or install Jettison, those are my only options right now?

Can’t believe I agave the same problem with my brand new MacBook Pro 14” M1 Pro. My external SanDisk extreme 960 SSD runs since two years fine on my iMac.
But my MBP 14” with Monterey 12.0.1 ejects the SSD every time the MBP falls asleep.

No problem with other external HDDs though.

I've recently purchased a 2021 14" MBP and notice my Sabrent Rocket drive sometimes does not wake properly from hibernation. I switched sleep mode from hibernate 3 to hibernate 25 mode so as power was cut to the external devices when in sleep. I thought that maybe it was due to that, so have switched back to default mode 3 (keeps power to memory) to see if this makes a difference

If you have a MBP, go to system preferences>Battery>Uncheck "Put hard disks to sleep" and uncheck "Prevent computer from sleeping automatically when the display is off."

I already had both of those options set to off and I still seem to get the disk not ejected properly on my sabranet sometimes

After updating to 12.0.1 I have the same issue on MacPro(late 2013). However, this does not happen on my MacBookPro (15" 2017) with the same disks and OS version.

Never happened before coming from BigSur. Unchecked every option in energy settings and tried cable alternatives - none of which fixed the problem. Improper disconnection occurs randomly, but often after 15-60 minutes of use.

Extremely annoying and I'm afraid disks might one day break due to this bug. Hoping this will be fixed in the next Monterey update.

I had the same problem. I have a LaCie External HD and LaCie tech support told me the problem was the Mac OSX. When I updated the OS, it saw my external HD and fixed it. I had this problem with my iMac 2020 and my Macbook Pro.

Did you try re-installing the O/S while the external HD is turned-on so the O/S can recognize it?

I don't think that doing this is going to make any difference... at all.

I am having exactly the same problem too.
I moved from a 2011 iMac (High Sierra) using 3 x ext USB drives, and all fine.

Moved up slightly to late 2013 Macbook Pro (Catalina), and drives are fine except a Samsung T7 Touch SSD?
When sleeping (which I used to do all the time on iMac) on waking, the Samsung T7 Touch SSD just gives the error :

'Drive Not ejected properly' EVERY TIME!?

I am worried that this thinks I am pulling out the drive, and the data on it will eventually be corrupt?!

I have :

Updated and installed the Samsung Software
Updated Catalina with any minor updates (dont need to upgrade to a newer OS X)
Changed a sleep setting in Terminal
Change the Power Options to Never put disks to sleep etc and the others settings..
Reset SMC
Reset PRAM
Changed USB Connection from Macbook directly to USB3.0 powered AC Hub with other drives.

This was always fine on High Sierra 10.13.6 with no Samsung software.

So on a powered USB Hub 3.0 with the other drives, just this Samsung drive keeps ejecting??
The other 2 drives (LaCie 2TB USB 3.0 & WD Drive USB 2.0) never eject and work fine.

Any ideas on why Samsung has started to do this?
Is it a Catalina issue?
Is it a Samsung issue, as its just this drive thats the problem?

Any possible cure I have missed through these posts, please feel free to post :)

I have the exact same problem and running a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2014) and it systematically happens with USB and a Jetdrive in the SD slot. That's painful.
I just upgraded to Monterey (with OpenCore) but the same problem existed even on previous versions.
I was expecting Monterey to fix that but unfortunately not :(

Hello there,
I am using my MBP (13" late 2016 with touch bar) a lot in clamshell mode on an external monitor.

And I have some HDD disks hooked up to it through and USB Hub (simple one : USB C towards the mac for power and data, USB 3 for the disks).

I often leaves my mac on for quite some time unattended (even at night sometimes), and when I get back to it, almost systematically the HDD are unmounted, and I have plenty of "disk not ejected properly" messages :

disk_not_ejected_properly2.jpg

And really a lot fo them (trying to close them all taking ages) :
View attachment 972024
(in French but same message as above)

And most of the time I need to reboot to remount the disks (sometimes they remount themselves but quite rare, and unplugging replugging the hub when they are unmounted usually does not remount them, so reboot the way to go ...).

So I have several questions :)

Is this behaviour normal ?
Is it an issue for the disks ?
Is the issue with the hub ? (but I have another one and the issue is the same)

Would a hub with its own power supply solve the issue ? (but I don't see any with USB C cable to the computer, except for the "dock" style hubs)

Must I go for a USB C dock ? (caldigit TS3 plus or others)

But as these are quite expensive, I might as well go for a NAS then (synology ds620 slim or something), as I would use the dock only for these disks I think (disks used for time machine backups and plenty of videos and pics).

Thanks in advance for any advice ! :)
Same MacBook, same problem. Started sometime last autumn, changing the SSD enclosure, SSD or Hub did not change anything for me. Last hope: Fix this, Apple.

Still happening here too, on 2013 Macbook Pro (Catalina).
I just put the Screen Saver to come on, so it never actually goes to sleep which is my only way around this while my Samsung SSD is connected.

Just ordered a new MBP M1 Max and hoping its not the same on there

I have had the problem of external drives randomly "dismounting" on their own while my computer is sleeping. Any disk access routines setup beforehand self-terminate once the drive is off line. This situation appears to be random in that it happens with different external drives....and only sometimes, not every time. I've had this problem for years on different OSX versions and on different MBPs.

I've come to accept this annoyance, but if someone an idea of how to prevent it, please let us know.
