Extremely Impressed With iPhone's Scratch Resistant Screen

Before the iPhone released i was really worried about scratches. I've had it in my pocket now for a few days and every time I take it out I worry about scratches (you would too after owning iPods). Every time I think I see a scratch it's easily removable by a simple wipe of your finger or using the cloth that came with it... amazing. :D

I don't think I ever need to own a case or screen protector for this, unless I accidentally drop it one day. Anyone else really impressed by this? :p
 
Shouldn't be difficult to keep it scratch-free if you are religious about using an empty pocket.

Is that what you are doing or do you have other things in there as well?

Keys and other metallic objects would be a killer I would have thought.
 
I'm not crazy enough to put my iphone with other metallic/hard objects in my pocket and I don't think I ever will. The only thing I'm worried about is dropping the thing, which i have once which left only a scratch on the bottom side of the iphone.
 
Well, you wouldn't expect it to scratch in an empty pocket, would you?

As regards that video, I don't believe it can be that good, judging by other threads on the forum.

Why not, its glass, not plastic. I dont plan on buying a screen protector just because its glass. As for the dropping, I am sure that apple took into account that the average person will drop their phone and made it stronger for that reason. Any cell phone is made to be dropped at least once, so I'm sure the Iphone is no different
 
i dropped my phone from five feet onto concrete in a parking garage, and the glass didn't pick up a scratch. i was very impressed. the back, however, wasn't so fortunate. :eek:

And your point is what?

The glass screen should only get scratched in your pocket if it's in there with something harder, surely?

There are reported cases on this forum of cracked screens from iPhones being dropped. They are not indestructible, however much we might like them to be, and however wonderful Apple are.

I'd be very surprised if the average Apple store was prepared to rectify the damage free of charge. It is user negligence after all.
 
I managed to scratch mine on my pocket somehow. I am thinking of an excuse to take it baxk to att and get a new one. I dont know how i couldve scratched it in my empty pocket. Normally they rubbed off easily, but this one didnt.

No I'm not. I'm saying that they didn't examine the phone carefully enough for scratches after abusing it in the way they did. I would have liked to have seen the phone myself up close, not on some small computer screen video.

There are many reports on this forum about scratches picked up in far less traumatic circumstances, particularly to the back and the silver bezel.

The screen may be fairly scratch resistant but can that be said for the rest of the phone?

all true.. but dont forget the back of the iphone is easy to scratch. and the chrome border too.
thats why i have the silicon incase case. the black model looks perfect..

That video was just sickening, it made me very uncomfortable just watching it! Maybe Apple should've made the whole thing out of glass :).

Of course this can and does happen. When I said that I would not spend $600 and treat a phone like that I was obviously referring to deliberately and consciously placing the phone into contact with metallic objects. In my view anyone who does that has more money than sense.

Please don't get me wrong, I am a supporter of the iPhone and look forward very much to the UK release when I will buy one (on condition that it has 3G by then).

What I am concerned about is that people may wrongly get the impression from the OP that the iPhone has some miraculous damage resistant qualities.

I believe, on the evidence that I have read, that such people will be in for a rude awakening. This is an expensive piece of equipment that needs and deserves a bit of care and attention - unless $600 means nothing to you!
 
That's the reason why they made the video... for the people who accidentally do those things to their iPhone, not deliberately. I'm pretty sure you have accidentally dropped a phone or some other expensive device before. No?
 
Incidentally, whilst the PC World stress test is impressive on the face of it, it is worth bearing in mind that they are concentrating on the resilience of the screen and the ability of the phone to continue working after being dropped.

They pay little or no regard to the cosmetic damage that must have been caused to the rest of the phone by being put in a bag with other metallic objects, although they do mention scuff damage to the bezel after it was dropped.
