Interesting thread.

Is the consensus that Apple’s OLEDs cause more issues that Samsung’s?

I’m upgrading next year from a regular iPhone 11 and want to avoid eye strain and headaches.

I had bad eye fatigue and headaches with iPhone XS, then used android only (except for iPad), but even Samsung’s devices are getting worse (my story is Galaxy S10+ perfectly fine, S20+ mostly fine, with S21 Ultra I need to use an overlay app to crank up brightness and be still able to use it)

The phone makers are addicted to OLED displays and there’s no end in sight.
I wonder how many executives at Apple can’t tolerate their OLED screens either?

I guess it's possible for the refresh rate to get high enough so that the brain won't perceive the flicker?

(Note: refresh rate is different from PWM flicker)

Yes, there are displays with PWM rates in the 20kHz range, which apparently only affects the most extreme cases.

Notebookcheck has a chart with PWM freqs of a bunch of recent devices. I'm not at my computer so I can't find it to link it but very high freq panels exist.

yes, that's normal when viewing the OLED screen in slo mo.

What we've found, though, is that the flicker really doesn't matter.... different people react differently and the only real way to know if it bothers you is to buy the phone and try it out.

Sorry about feeling like you have to return it. I went through the same thing last year with the 12 mini: I LOVED that phone and was so excited to have a small phone that didn't have a home button.... (but now I have the 13mini and it's okay for me).

Yeah I‘m gutted but have decided to return the phone and go back to my XR. I can’t justify spending £1k on a phone that gives me physical symptoms just through light use. I’m glad you’ve found an iPhone with OLED that you’re ok to use. Once my XR breaks I’ll have to go for one of these OLED phones too, but hopefully the price might have come down a little by then or if I’m extremely lucky the iPhone 14 will be much improved. I find it so depressing that this might not be sorted for years to come, thus punishing those of us who have been loyal to Apple for 10+ years. Even if it only affects 1 in 10 people, that’s surely still hundreds of thousands, if not millions of customers.

Out of interest, have the 13 or 13 Mini been reported to be any better than the 13 Pro as far as PWM is concerned?

If i am correct most of the succes story's here are about the 13 or 12 mini, seems to be better than any other phone.

Good choice. You gotta protect your health ?

You can read the last ten pages since September that people have discussed their experiences with the different phones, but you’ll find that it all depends on the person.

I find the 13 mini tolerable, while another person can’t and finds the 13 pro tolerable, and another person likes the pro max the best. It all depends on the person.

hmm my question is the same on notebook check iphone 13 is 609 pwm flicker which seems better and it should be than the iphone 13 pro

I’ve never had to much issue with my 11Pro which I am still using today over two years later.
Ahhhh the 11 pro. That’ll be probably another regret I’ll have: never had owning the 11 pro (that along with not spending an extra $100 to get the jet black 7).

My personal view it’s not just the model of phone if it will impact you or not but individual handsets within that model line. It really feels like there is no consistency between handsets of the same model. That’s pure blind luck if you get a handset you can use or not.

Yes there’s evidence where a guy could not tolerate his own 13 pro max but could use his wife’s 13 pro max fine. I think we’re in worse shape than we hoped when some of the displays from the same exact model are nervous system thrashers and some aren’t.
None of the displays of the same model are identical. Some have red shift on the sides, others green, some yellowish tinge. I think it’s a crapshoot what you’ll end up with.

First day with iPhone 13 mini. No issues at all. It even feels more relaxing to my eyes than 11. Time will tell but i can’t believe this…. 12 6.1 was giving me nausea after 15-20 minutes.
Wooooo!! Great news!!! :D

If we are to believe reports of the constant flicker frequency, my theory is that our brains adjust much easier.

Still doing okay with the 13 mini after four weeks. The mild eye strain I've almost completely forgotten. Every once in a while I'm reminded, "Oh yeah, it does bother my eyes a little bit." But mostly, I've adjusted. It certainly is better than the 11. (Which sounds ridiculous, but true. I don't get the same kind of long term eye "blindness" or "fatigue" I got with the 11.)

I do miss the wonderful screens of pre-8 days... before they introduced the Wide Color screens.... I suspect that was the start of everything terrible.
I am getting the itch to try iPhone 13 Mini…

I gave up on iPhone 13 Pro probably quicker than any iPhone in the past. I do see a potential benefit going from iPhone SE to iPhone 13 Mini. However, it doesn’t appear that holiday returns have started yet. Side note to Apple: I’d like to be able to buy an iPhone I don’t have to plan around returning.

We'll see! There was a lot of buzz around the 13 and its new updated graphics driver on this thread, and how Apple might have FINALLY fixed PWM. But, it wasn't a cure-all, and it seemed they simply tweaked the flicker (from variable, to consistent rate of flicker at all brightness levels.)

Maybe Apple is just experimenting with each phone release to try and finally solve the PWM issue ?‍♂️
It’s reassuring they’re making an attempt to fix it. Unfortunately realistically many of us including myself probably need the display to be flicker-free rather than at a higher rate, or at least at an incredibly low amplitude.

Holiday return window has started I think ?

One question I have is it generally considered that Android phones with OLED screens cause people less issues, and if it is why should this be the case?

I know my OnePlus Six has always been pretty good on this front as was the Android phone before it which also had an OLED screen. It’s only been an iPhone namely the X which has caused me problems.

So this thread has been going on for about 4 years now, and I haven't found a single thing that helps with this flicker sensitivity - until a few weeks ago. I've been doing occlusion therapy for about ~3 weeks now, and have absolutely noticed a huge difference in flicker symptoms by covering one eye with an eyepatch. By covering my left eye, I have a minor/medium reduction in symptoms. Covering the right eye gives a medium/major reduction.

I spoke to my optometrist about this, and he suggested that this may be either the eyepatch helping with a binocular vision dysfunction, or helping simply because the patch reduces the raw amount of flicker I'm seeing. The patch isn't a viable long term solution due to issues with overusing it, but it could potentially help indicate an issue with BVD. I'd be really interested in seeing if others have any kind of success with this, it could be a step forward with our situation.

For reference, I wore the patch on my left eye for a week, wearing the patch for 4-6 hours a day. Then I did a week with the patch on my right eye, same usage times. In both cases (especially while patching my right eye), I saw a noticeable reduction in my usual symptoms (Gritty eyes, eye strain, pulsing pain above temples, headache, nausea).

This may end up being nothing significant, but it's the first thing that's actually worked for me in 4 years, I'm really interested in exploring it further. Has anyone ever tried occlusion therapy with any success?
