Came across this if no-one has mentioned already - another positive review of the iPhone 14 - Note he mentions a different screen manufacturer for the iPhone 14 (BOE)

Also found this article on BOE

So it sounds like BOE's screens may be better, in fact, for PWM related issues, however, reading the article, given the displays of the iPhone 14 are still shared across the others, with BOE only getting 5 million display orders, one can't assume that you get a BOE screen just by buying an iPhone 14 🤷‍♂️

Reading the article suggests the BOE is shipping displays to Apple this month which would mean devices in hand now won't have these displays as they would have been produced ahead of release.

Hi there, another iPhone 14 Pro returned.

It was definitely better than last year’s 13 Pro but eye strain is noticeable… so I’m not comfortable spending 1320€ right now.

I’m using the standard 12 which is fine even with the 220Hz flicker according to notebookcheck… maybe should I try the 13 or 13 mini?

What is the general consensus on those two? They should have higher PWM frequency, but that is not the whole picture…

Thank you

Not convinced it's just PWM either.
No idea what cause is, think it also has to do with contrast or something.
8+ is just so much easier to read. But so is the 12 I checked yesterday.

All 14s are with BOE ? Please tell me to pull the trigger.
Samsung, LG and now BOE. Still a lottery I'm afraid. As normal you won't know until you have real world usage.

I'm thinking my 14 is a Samsung display as it's very yellow. I've found in the past you either get a yellow to green screen or a red to blue display (on the tilt).

Are you getting along with 14;

I don't think so. I'm restricted to evening usage as I'm not taking it to work (not until I commit). No headaches but I'm not comfortable using it, it feels a little intense on my vision and my eyes are very tired the next day 😣. Depressing.

Maybe if I was using it less, say if I had an iPad, as I use it for all my email and web surfing. But then that feels like I'm compromising to make it work. I am used to a larger display with the 7 Plus, so maybe this is a factor as well? Dunno, might get trapped in the return cycle as I'm considering the 14 Plus then possibly another 14. Maybe I'll get a better, whiter display. But that feels stupid as I've been here before.

👏 Congrats to @PwmMen for finally getting out of the club!

For all my issues before and persistent headaches still being an issue, I would still say iPhone 14 Pro Max is somewhere between a 2-4/10 on my eye strain scale.

This may be the best experience I’ve had in terms of headaches and migraines, which still doesn’t compare to a 0/10 on iPhone SE or any LCD iPhone.
I’m doing much better with my 14 Pro Max thanks to the reminder to turn off Attention Aware. It made a big difference for me to stop my eyes from being blasted with the infrared.

When my husband and I used to use the infrared iris scanners on our Samsungs, it was interesting and horrifying to note that pain became cumulative each of the very few times we attempted to use it. And that feature was removed permanently with no explanation.

Yes we’re constantly exposed to infrared light in our environment but we don’t naturally have focused beams of it shining into our eyes.

The white shimmering flickering at my left eye is greatly reduced on this display. So in that respect it seems better for me than my LCD displays.

How much better is the iPhone 11 than the XR. Maybe I will just upgrade to an 11 if the 14 doesn’t work out lol. Or rock this XR until the new SE.
The camera on the iPhone 11 was noticeably better in low light. Other improvements to the phone as a whole were made, but I forgot exactly what. It can work with AirTags. You may as well wait to see what the new SE offers. I would have stayed with the new XR AT&T had sent us for free if it had had more than 64gb. I was too constrained on that.

Here's my first experience with the iPhone 14. It's a blessing! It will definitely stay and replace my iPhone 12 Pro. Better battery, better processor, better speakers, better 5G/LTE reception, smaller notch, etc. But now to the most important thing, my eyes and my body do not react to the display at all. I'm so happy and still can't really believe it. The frequency is very high, or DC dimming must be implemented.
I'm happy for you. Although, now I feel like I'm on the circus or amusement park ride again. Do I order it and get it tomorrow and try it out? Or do I just be happy with my 11 and try the phones next year when all of them supposedly have dynamic island, which I really like. It would be very great to have a modern phone without screen issues though. We can all see where this is going :)

The two variables are that everyone's different, and there probably is some kind of "screen lottery "going on.

How do we know all the 14s are good for PWM?

Sigh.

I'm just surprised that it is available to order and receive tomorrow. That makes it awful easy to give it a shot.

OK iPhone OLED support group, I'm ready to order the 14 but I just wanna hear from some last minute folks that they are getting on better with the 14 then the pro please. Either that or talk me out of it!

It sounds like the iPhone 14 Pro has a much higher PWM frquency than the 13 Pro and earlier.... is there any reason, then, that for someone who had absolutely no problem with the 13 Pro- there would be any problem using the 14 Pro?

I made that upgrade, and I don't think I had any real problems last night when setting up my 14 Pro- but there was a difference when looking at each, as if something really minor with the 14 Pro was a little uncomfortable, and I can't tell what it is. I did the phone to phone transfer, so it has the exact same settings in place (including brightness up to about 90% and reduce white point up to 95%- which really worked for me on the 13 Pro, when turning down brightness there I did notice discomfort).

Thanks!

Just read David D444 comment [#17] on another thread about how it was great and then on the third day he developed symptoms. Pass.
I get mine tomorrow so will let you know how it goes. It will be my last shot at a 14 iphone. I agree with the poster above who said they didn't think it was all about PWM. I was still having issues at max brightness. I think it must be a combination of things and probably user dependent too.

It’s so hard to say. I was fine on 12 Pro Max but had a horrible time on 13 Pro. I had a horrible time on the 12 mini and then I somehow adjusted to it! Then got unadjusted when I got the 13 Pro.

So I personally don’t feel comfortable assuming that a newer generation is automatically going to be compatible with my sensitivity. I’m not even sure it’s purely pwm that’s affecting me. It could be something else that’s going on with the display. And Apple seems to change or tweak something about their displays each year. So each year it’s experimenting time if I intend to upgrade.

I’m still evaluating the 14 Pro Max. I’ve had to give up coffee in the middle of all this so it’s a bit chaotic. Just now I took a quick look at my 13 Pro screen just to see if I missed the smaller form factor and that quick peek made my head feel awful.

I’m posting this from my 14 Pro Max. Unfortunately with the 14 Pro Max I don’t feel comfortable using my other OLED screens, which are on a S22 Ultra and a Pixel 6 Pro. Between the exclusivity imposed by e sims and this pwm stuff, it seems Tim Cook is determined to force me to use just iPhones, and possibly only this iPhone. Yes, I’m starting a conspiracy theory! Eat your hearts out 4Chan. I am now: iAnon. Mwahahaha!

In all seriousness though, I feel like I’m in the process of adjusting to this display and there’s only so much bouncing around among different versions of pwm my brain is willing to tolerate. This is definitely the easiest of my 3 OLED displays for my eyes to focus on.

Would it be crazy to return the 14 when I take back the 14 Pro? While the 14 Pro definitely didn't work for me, the 14 non-pro seems ok so far (not a fan of the overly yellowish screen and have a display filter on + motion reduced) but I have realised I much prefer a Plus-sized phone. 🤦‍♂️

I say crazy because after 5 years of trying I may have a phone in my hands that currently appears to be working for me and my PWM sensitivity (won't count my chickens just yet) - I might just be gambling that away by returning it and ordering a 14 Plus!

The Pro Max would have been a no go last year and this year (far too heavy, too low PWM frequency) so I should accept the 14, but with the Plus now being an option......
.....my friend said I always want the thing I haven't got!

Of course, I'm hoping the 14 plus PWM etc is the same as the 14 non-Pro, but that's the gamble. My thinking is if the 14 Plus doesn't work for me a 14 non-pro can easily be repurchased. But with the display lottery, as it is, the one I have in hand might be the only one that works for me and I should be grateful for just that. 😳 I'm on the ledge.
Just because you’re literally asking: No, you’re not crazy. Think you should return both and try with the 14Plus. If that screen doesn’t work for you, you can try another 14 or just go back to your old phone.

Whaddya think?
