Nope, not a bowling ball! You've got the "ball" part right, though. It's a 4" crystal ball. These things make wonderful photographic subjects in-and-of themselves, plus lend themselves quite neatly to creating abstract images as well.
So how did I get this image? I set things up on a dresser which is near a couple of windows. My plan was to position the iPad so that the crystal ball would pick up the colors and icons on the home page. The crystal ball actually reflects things upside down. While I was getting ready to do the shoot of the iPad, I noticed that in the meantime the crystal ball was picking up the colors of my bedspread on the nearby bed, so I tinkered around with positioning things just so, including my camera angle, and the result was this image. I liked the colors but also it intrigued me because of the additional reflection of the iPad itself and the lines of the window panes, too.
Shooting the iPad, my original idea, didn't come out as successfully as I had hoped, so one of these days I'm going to take another shot at that.....
