Old thread, but couldn't help myself after reading all the non-sense...

It doesn't work because your face will be in reverse in the mirror. So if you have a mole on your left cheek, FaceID will detect it in the right cheek. The same will happen will all your facial features, hence, faceID will determine this is not the right face.

Get it???
But it does seem to work...

But it does seem to work...

As mentioned earlier in the thread, maybe it works because FaceID doesn't read the 'mirror image face' but instead the FaceID dots are reflected by the mirror back to read the 'real' face, which would be seen as the correct one (not a mirror image!).

It works because your mirror image is within the tolerances of a successful match.
You’re able to recognise yourself in pictures/videos aren’t you? Your mirror image isn’t that different.

And for those who are still struggling to understand why Face ID doesn’t read the flat plane of a mirror, try using Face ID through a window, what do you expect to happen?...

Are you saying light bounces of reflective surfaces? Blasphemy!

Funny (or not) that so many have so little basic understanding of science. However there are situations when a mirror may NOT work. If you have lower symmetry in your left/right facial hemispheres then FID may not work since will......it is a mirrored image.:D

Well its been almost a year since anyone said anything here, but since no one seemed to reach a consensus, 2 points to make:

1) The mirror is a flat plane but reflects light in 3D, hence reflections of the face work. Let that sink in.

2) A heavily asymmetrical face would not work most likely, because it wouldnt be the same as a reflection.

ok byeeee
