One person probably works on the calculator app and probably only when needed (literally the app had probably not even been touched by an Apple developer since it last got a “redesign” prior to the iOS 11 visual redesign.)

A whole team works on FaceID and is the cornerstone of the device security, that took many years to develope.

Not even remotely the same or comparable.

No bugs or security holes ever been found? No bypasses of lock screens or anything like that?

People can’t have concerns?

And you know what... first implementation of Touch ID didn’t work that well. It took some software updates.

Your comparison of FaceID to the calculator is what’s concerning.

People can be wary of FaceID because it’s new. But having said that, people were also wary of TouchID on its initial launch. Yet here we are just four years later, people upset TouchID is going to be fading out of iOS devices moving forward. The same technology many were sceptical of just that short time ago.

If they screw this up maybe they can’t handle something close to being essential. That is the cause for concern some people may have.
If they have a glitch in something that doesn't get that much attention and isn't of that much consequence then they can't handle something that would be at the heart and basically the face (pun intended) of a major new generation of their biggest product? I mean I guess anything is possible, like Earth's core stopping its rotation.

Going back to my original post...

If you are using your own phone. You are looking at it and then open your banking app which currently uses Touch ID.

I would expect the banking app to simply open with no authentication prompts whatsoever because the phone knows you are already looking at your own phone.

That said, I bet it’s not a seamless as that which will be a pity.

Does it currently just open like that with Touch ID if you simply rest your finger on the home button as you are opening the app?

Not a good idea. A second verification step would be better for security.

Even when im downloading a free app from app store, i still have to put in my password or use touchID.

Just because your phone is unlocked by you and you are looking at it, doesnt mean it secure.

CDM No it doesn’t currently work like that. If you open an app that requires authentication with your finger on touch ID. You are still prompted momentarily for your finger.

KGB7 I disagree. Firstly it’s not a second verification step. It’s using exactly the same information as initially logging in. If you have been using your phone and you REMAIN looking at it when you open an app it should open immediately if authentication is required. Is the app pauses for a moment for you to REMAIN looking at your phone which you may have been doing for the last 10 minutes is not achieving anything. Face ID is not Touch ID. It’s supposed to be inherently more advanced.

Think of it another way...

Touch ID - you are blind and you’re talking to somebody. They ask for some money. Because you can’t see them you ask them to re-authentic themselves using Touch ID. Siri then confirms they are who you think they are and you pay them.

Face ID - Now you aren’t blind and you’re talking to that same person. They also ask for some money but since you’re still looking at them as you chat you’re happy to hand the money over.

I hope when the X is out on Friday that’s how it works.

Same could be used for saved passwords for websites. If the system knows it’s you using the phone and you have given a website permission to access it via a password the X should just log you in and bypass the authentication screen completely.

I knew it would be disappointing.....

From the Apple Face ID document.

Autofill passwords in Safari
You can use Face ID to autofill saved usernames and passwords for websites in Safari. Just go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode and turn on Safari AutoFill. Then follow these steps:

  1. Open Safari and go to a website.
  2. Tap the sign in field. If you see your username or password appear above the keyboard, tap it.
  3. Glance at your iPhone X to autofill your username and password.

So how is that any quicker? If there’s a password there why is there a need to tab anything. The website should just open when you look at the phone.

Without Face ID you’d do step 2 and hit GO on the keyboard.

Isn't that better security?

No. Why is it better security?

If you have associated a password to a site and given permission for the phone to use Face ID and YOU are looking at the phone why should you be prompted to hit the username and then look at the phone. How is that more secure?

The phone knows it’s you so should let you in.

If somebody else was using the phone it wouldn’t let them in.

Pressing the login before looking is a wasted step and offers zero additional security.

Wouldn't step 2 and 3 happen pretty much at the same time as you are already looking at the phone?

Currently you do step 2 and enter.

With Face ID you need to do step 2 and look.

1: it’s not faster. I bet it’s slower.
2: it’s not more secure

Why have step 2 at all on a Face ID device if you have already setup Face ID entry for that site?

What Face ID entry for the site? Not sure how it's slower if you tap on the username and you are already looking at the screen. And as far as security goes, seems like without Face ID anyone who is using the device could just select a username and login by tapping enter/done, based on what you are saying.

You are correct. Currently you could do that.

I just don’t get with a Face ID device why there is a need to select the username. Your face is the security and that should be enough. Pressing the username serves zero purpose.

Think about it. What is the point of step 2?
[doublepost=1509690053][/doublepost]As an example here is the login page of a website I use for work.

Currently
  1. I click into the username box.
  2. Select my username from the bar above the keyboard.
  3. Press enter or login.
With Face ID
  1. I click into the username box.
  2. Select my username from the bar above the keyboard.
  3. Look at phone.
How it should work (if you have the auto-login option ON...
  1. Browse to the page and as you look at the phone you are logged in with ONE seemless action.

So now the issue is with item 2 which is there now and would be no worse? Seems like a lot of thought is going into trying to come with imaginary "fails" (which don't even come close to being even annoyances, let alone fails).

Just got my X and the web Face ID login is worse than I thought.

Before I’d go to the website. Click the username above the keyboard and click go and I was in.

Now I go to the website. Click the username. Authenticate with Face ID and STILL have to click go!!

So after a day with the X I can confirm opening apps that require Face ID to open work well. The Face ID displays momentarily before the app opens. It works better than Touch ID. You can now open your bank apps just by looking at them.

Opening websites that require a password however is a disappointment and I’ve turned this feature off.

I thought I’d be able to go to a website that I have a saved password for and it would log me in like above. No. All it does is add another layer of security to login. So now instead of clicking your password to login you also have to authenticate with Face ID. It’s a shame you can’t JUST use Face ID.
