Has your Face ID learned your face with a mask *without registering your face with a mask*?

Is there any way to make this happen? I keep trying but my iPhone 12 Pro doesn’t seem to be learning

Hi everyone!

I am wearing the mask in the attached picture, and today, my iPhone 12 Pro started unlocking even with it on! I have not done any Face ID registration with my mask on. I wonder if this is because my mask does not cover my chin?

Since the beginning of the pandemic, I have been wearing this mask and was using an iPhone 11 Pro Max–which never learned to recognize me with a mask!

Is this happening to anyone else?
I am using Iphone 12 pro max and running Ios 14.3(latest). Same thing happening on my phone since today (Devember 28,2020) only. I updated it a week before I guess, so its definitely not an update. I talked with apple support and they are unsure about it. They said “It may be picking up enough data from your Face to make the authentication. Or even with the Mask, the shape of your face is getting picked up. I personally grew out my Beard and its never given me an issue with FaceID and I set it up when I didn't have one. “ lol.

As others have mentioned, your mask is really slim around the nose, so my guess is that FaceID can read your upper cheeks and the shape of your nose, which does the trick. The most common single-use rectangular blue surgical masks cover our faces from just below our eyes down, so FaceID gets thrown off.

Makes sense, but I am using the single-use rectangular blue mask since the pandemic and got this phone a month before and it never unlocked with mask on. I did the update (ios 14.3) 2-3 days before and still, it was not unlocking my phone until today(Dec 28). I restarted thinking its a bug but from now my phone is unlocking with the same kind of mask on all the time.
