What do you guys think ? Will the next year, 2018 iPad Pro have a face recognition feature copied from the iPhone X ?

It would be nice as I use my 12.9 like a computer (with the apple keyboard).

Just hit a key and have it unlock.

Face ID would be in service to an edge-to-edge screen on an iPad.

I'm not sure how i would feel about a notch on the iPad though. True, the screen is bigger, but it'll still look annoying. Perhaps there won't be a notch if implemented on an iPad (w/edge-to-edge screen).

I would be quite happy to have a notch / etc. if it means an updated edge-to-edge iPad mini though. The iPhone X has an 18.5:9 ratio ignoring the notch. For the iPad mini, the physical dimensions are 8" by 5.3" (to the best of what I could Google). If we reduce the height a little to ~7.95", then we have a new 3:2 screen ratio with a diagonal of ~9.5". That's about 40% more in screen area in the same physical package based on http://www.displaywars.com/9,5-inch-3x2-vs-7,9-inch-4x3. Sounds good to me.

Just not interested. My touch ID has worked great, so great I bought the 8+. Maybe after a year or so and it is found to work well. We will see how it works on the X.

The X will be a real eye opener for the technology, still not convinced here.

I mean you personally not interested is a different issue, I was thinking maybe you were saying strategically or technically it is not possible that way...

So what you are saying implies that perhaps for the 10.5" iPad Pro it is not possible ?

I have just found that finger ID has worked so well.

I will only believe that face ID works well AFTER the X is out and we get input from the users. I am sure it IS technically possible but seeing it work out in our environment could be another story. I have great respect for Apple but we all know they did everything they could to get touch ID to work with the OLED screen and failed. It seem like Face ID was their second choice. That indicates to me that Apple wanted to stick with the touch ID.

Sorry I should clarify - I am highlighting the iPad mini simply because it hasn't seen an update for a really long time, yet it hasn't been discontinued, so it could possibly be part of the revolutionary new iPad series that Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned some time back

I love how to unlock my devices, I have to make sure I put a part of my body on a specific small area to let it authenticate me

Who wants a device that just sees you and unlocks without any further interaction? That’s lame

If Apple are happy with Face ID and are able to mass produce the module I would expect to see it in every Apple iPad, iPhone, desktop and notebook eventually.

I'm going to say no, just for the simple reason that Apple (actually their component makers) is having significant problems producing the chips needed for facial recognition. If they're struggling to meet the demands of the iPhone X, I doubt Apple will make matters even worse and add it to the next iteration of the iPad.

So what you are saying is, perhaps for next year (2018) it may not be there but eventually it will do come on the iPad ?

I'm saying that imo, its doubtful that we'll see in 2018. I have no idea what the likelihood is beyond that however.

lol ! BTW it is a big question and issue for Apple what other magic that they can produce for the next year's iPad Pro ? What more could they bring up their sleeve ?

Switch to oled and add force touch with force feedback? Probably not tho.

Im indifferent about the actual face ID, I would love it though if it mean reduction in bezel size! Not interested if they simply add it in along with everything they already have...

Decent multi tasking for one. Face is will come for the iPad X for the tenth anniversary.

The 5 year old Surface RT has better multi tasking than any iPad.

is 2018 going to be the tenth anniversary of the iPad ? But Apple doesn't sound like it is going to celebrate it big with some big changes and announcement for the iPad Pro models in 2018 ?

Well, if the ipads don't get it, they better make the home botton a non physical button like on the current iphones. Every ipad i've owned has had the physical home button fail. It's the most vulnerable part of the ipad next to the screen IMHO.

I don't see Face ID coming to the iPad in the June refresh. Apple is already supply constrained heavily for the new iPhone X due to the new true-depth cameras. Also this iPhone X is a guinea pig of sorts. If theres enough backlash they will keep touch ID around for a while longer than they'd hoped. So maybe in 2019 it'll be in iPads.

Personally I think Face ID (if working as intended) will just be something everyone forgets about BECAUSE THATS THE POINT. You just look at your phone and swipe up. Its completely natural rather than having to consciously be pressing a button to unlock.

On the other hand I HATE the fragmentation like when touch ID first came out.....I kept doing it on my iPad Air expecting it to unlock. Annoying.

please no faceID to iPads. in fact, i think that faceID won't be that amazing as apple think it is.
The idea of home button was simple. Press the button and it takes you home whenever you are.
Even now I don't like how it works that you still ahve to slide up. Sliding up is definitely not the move that I wanna be doing all the time I pick up the phone and certainly not with an iPad.
