Does Whatsapp use location service? I just checked - whatsapp doesn't list location service unless its doing something behind the scenes. same for instagram-no location service listed.

You are still tracked if you're using WhatsApp. If so, what's the point.

They do use location services.

Whatsapp features such as sharing your location needs location services on.

I can't be the only one, but while I don't use Facebook regularly (I'd be totally fine with the Safari version for the odd time I might want to), I keep the stupid app installed for one reason and one reason only.. Candy Crush Soda. Say what you will about the game, but if it didn't require Facebook to sync progress between my iPhone and iPad I'd simply delete it.

Well.. then why is whatsapp not listed under location services? and since it's not listed, you can't even turn it off when you don't need it.

It's listed for me. One of the nice things about iOS (when compared to Android) is that an app doesn't have to ask for permission for access unless something is triggered. In this case, WhatsApp won't be listed under Location Services and won't use your location until you send your location to someone for the first time.

Obviously it isn't tracking your location in day-to-day usage. Only when you intentionally initiate a location share.

But... Facebook and Messenger apps don't need location services turned on either for both apps to function.

In fact the Messenger app works exactly like Whatsapp as you described.

That's where I draw the line. I've downloaded fun games that want me to connect to Facebook. They get deleted. Facebook is where I do Facebook. When I'm in another app, that's none of Facebook's business. I don't care if they're just handling the authentication or not. I have no intentions of making Facebook my main login for everything I do.

That's not really the size of the update though, it's more along the lines of the size of the app (although even that's not fully a match).

They update so often to scrub away all the negative reviews on a regular basis.

Reviews don't really matter for an app like Facebook given that people either get it or don't because of other reasons, with the reviews playing little role in it all, so it's most likely one of the lesser things they care about as far as deciding whether to update or not. The more likely scenario as to why they update regularly is because they are on a fairly typical Agile model of development.
