Happened to me this morning too, a little annoying as i would have thought with the 'require attention' setting turned off it would be more relaxed with the requirement for my focused eyes!

I have had the phone since launch, reset the Face ID a few times and I cannot recall a single time it had opened for me first thing in the morning.

It is both funny and annoying. I guess I must look scary when I wake up.

I was experiencing the same thing. It was because my one eye would always be closed or the phone would be in landscape laying on my side. I turned off attention aware and it helped.

I thought this might be the case too but it also happens with both eyes open. Also, FaceID works with sunglasses so wouldn’t that mean it doesn’t need to see your eyes?

Turns out it’s because my phone is too close to my face in those situations. Face ID does need your eyes, but it can see through sunglasses.

FaceID uses IR lighting and most sunglasses do not block much IR. That’s why FaceID work with most sunglasses. Not all because some do block a fair amount of IR.

Glad I'm not the only one having this annoyance. Definitely a situation in which TouchID is missed. I'm sure this will get better as FaceID improves.

I'd say it's pretty consistent in failing at least once or twice when I'm in bed either in the dark or waking up. For sure fails if I don't stick the phone out in front of my face.
