Just an exaggeration. I put that cause I don’t know how many times I look at it in a day. But it doesn’t work quite a bit of the time
Well it doesn’t work when laying flat, that is just the way it is. I don’t have an issue with it at all any other time.

If mine doesn't work (which is rarely) the numeric keypad comes up. I just hit Cancel and it immediately rescans and unlocks. Isn't this a 'retry'?

It’s a retry but I understand (could be wrong) that the learning kicks in when you enter your pin only.

What do you mean by "...the learning kicks in..."? The OP says they have to hit the Sleep button in order to try again. You don't have to, you just hit Cancel. Learning your FID is ONLY done in Settings> Face ID & Passcode.

When FaceID has a 'failure' in recognising your face, it could be that it is the first time you have a new 'feature' and it isn't sure. As I understood it from the Apple explanations the best way to progress the AI learning is to then enter your PIN which is a way of saying "hey stupid, it really is me" :)

When you hit cancel, or sleep, to force a retry you aren't teaching it, you are simply performing a separate attempt against already known data points.

I hope that makes it a bit clearer of what I meant....

You can get a second chance at FaceID if you swipe down starting from just above the home bar.

"To improve unlock performance and keep pace with the natural changes of your face and look, Face ID augments its stored mathematical representation over time. Upon successful unlock, Face ID may use the newly calculated mathematical representation—if its quality is sufficient—for a finite number of additional unlocks before that data is discarded. Conversely, if Face ID fails to recognize you, but the match quality is higher than a certain threshold and you immediately follow the failure by entering your passcode, Face ID takes another capture and augments its enrolled Face ID data with the newly calculated mathematical representation."

Face ID is constantly checking faces for everyone that unlocks your phone. Is there any chance that one's wife could unlock the phone enough times with the password that face ID starts to recognize them instead of the original person it was set for?

I don't think so since it has to recognize the person by a certain amount before adding their data.

@Paddle1 nailed it. Typing in password only updates the datapoint if there is a match up to a significant percentage already. Unless you and your wife looks similar there’s no chance of that happening.
