Face ID with mask analyzes area around your eyes, thus requiring a scan without glasses.

Mine works without any problem.
I don’t think this is true, when I can almost never get face ID to work with a mask, even when I pull it down toward my chin. 🫤

I personally noticed that after setting up FaceID with masks (and glasses) it works SO MUCH BETTER for me even when I’m not wearing a mask. I used to have extreme trouble unlocking my phone when lying in bed in the dark and now it just works. It’s wonderful!
How do you set it up with masks? I tried and it directs me to remove it. …

Not sure if it is just placebo but I recently switched to wearing a black face mask and I’m noticing a significant improvement in FaceID performance compared to the white mask I was using. Both are pretty standard KN95 masks.

Just thought I would share. Curious if anyone else noticed something similar.

Interesting, thanks! In fact that the exact type of mask I’ve been using currently, black N95. I only have one Face ID device (ipad) so it’s all pretty new to me. Also I have the “require attention” feature on, perhaps I need to try switching if off for a while, in case that makes a difference.

I always turn off “require attention” so that will probably help.

Oh I’m using an Ipad, ipad pro 2021 (?) model I think. So maybe that’s part of the issue, there’s more options for phones…
What model of iPhone do you have? iPhone 12 is the lowest model that'll support it.

(My phone btw is iphone SE so still using touch ID on that one :) )

I picked the SE3 and not the 13 mini mainly for the reason to have Touch ID instead of Face ID. I drive many hours in high speed trains and need to wear a mask onboard and don't want to take it off all the time whenever I use my phone. This decision was right. I had hoped for the 13 mini to have Touch ID as well. I prefer sharing my fingertip with companies over sharing my retina scan as the second reason.

No iPads support FaceID with a mask on, unfortunately.

Ah, ok, well I learned something new today! Thank you. I wonder why that is? Maybe the new iphones have some special fancy tech that the semi-new ipads don’t.

Face ID with a mask is more resource intensive so only the newer models are enabled to do it.

According to this, it's because it relies more heavily on scanning your eyes.
