i asked someone on the Apple chat and he says they are the same, and the Facetime camera is just showing you the new feature. But I doubt this guy knows the real reason, it took him like 20 minutes.

I would like to buy a MacBook Air

Hi

I was just wondering if Photo Booth is still on the MacBook Air and if the FaceTime camera allows you to take photos with it in Photo Booth?

Thanks. :)

yes.

Despite the confusion on this thread about hardware/software, in my opinion the camera on the air is of a much lower resolution than my previous MB unibody. This is very noticeable in dim light where the old camera gave much better results in both Photo Booth and imovie. It's the only thing on the air that I'm disappointed with.

Not sure if this has been noticed before, but on the sticker on the back of the box of my new 11" MBA, "iSight camera" is on the features list despite the fact that the Apple says Facetime camera. Interesting.

I don't think iChat and FaceTime will merge. Look at what happened with the Quicktime player. Maybe in Snow Lion they will merge these apps and cut out more legacy code like 32-bit and Carbon.

I had a big issue with the MBA fan when using Skype. The noise was killing me. In the end I gave the MBA back, but I still miss it. Can anyone tell me whether FaceTime VDO will also ckick off the fan on a MBA 13".

Regarding the cameras, I've checked them in the Apple Store, and interestingly found that the unibody polycarbonate MacBooks have the best camera of them all, followed by the 17" MacBook Pro. The 15" and 13" MacBook Pro's and the MacBook Air's cameras are about the same in quality.

So I noticed that Steve kept saying that the new MacBook Air shipped with the FaceTime camera. I was wondering about this all day long, so I have to ask now.

On the Notebook comparison page of Apple.com, it even notes that they are 2 different features. What on earth is the difference?

Does the new FaceTime program only work on the Air? Is it a better quality camera? Maybe it's just that they wanted to drop the iSight name, and bring FaceTime to the computer audience?

They are one and the same, rubbish! I am quite disappointed by the quality of the cameras in laptops as a whole.

Why? They are only meant for video chatting. If you need high quality photos get a camera :)

I think they need to put the camera from the back of the iPhone 4 into all new macs as a replacement for iSight. It's sad that the built-in iSight hasn't progressed much sense they started putting them in their computers. We pay good money for our macs, they should have kick ass cameras in them

In the end, I decided to buy a MacBook Pro instead of the MacBook Air. I have the 13 inch model but it is the version with the higher spec. I must say, the camera is rubbish. But then, it is a lot better than some web cams. And anyway, if you need a better camera you should buy a camera. But I think that probably the iSight and and Facetime cameras are about the same if they are on laptops. However probably though if they are on desktop machines such as the iMac, they are better quality.

Let me start off by saying, I'm impressed a conversation of mine has gone on so long. :p I was just thinking about this debate the other day, and I figured I'd give its progression a look.

You know, that wouldn't necessarily be a hard thing to do, because without that chrome ring on the iPhone, it's not a whole lot bigger, and shouldn't be a problem regarding the size of the bezel. However, I think the thickness of the camera itself would be an issue. It would be great to have an autofocus camera as a webcam though.

Back on the discussion of the thread, I got a chance to play with both Airs at the Apple store. I'm 90% sure that the "FaceTime" camera in the Airs is a lower resolution than the regular "iSight" found in the rest of the MacBooks.

I think this was proven somewhere in the forums when 2 pictures were taken, and the one taken with the FaceTime camera was a good bit smaller than the iSight, because of the PPI.

It’s definitely a catchy marketing name, “Facetime,” —Facebook. Plus it’s appropriately titled for it limitations. Mainly captures face, not full close up full body or group capture. And no i’m not referring to porno capture. Lol

Well i don't think the iMacs would have any trouble fitting the camera in them. the notebooks on the other hand might, especially the air. I imagine that the extra thinness of the air probably contributes to the lower image quality of the new "facetime" camera. i guess they don't necessarily have to put specifically the iPhone camera in (though it'd be awesome), but i think they should put in a better one. Apple could figure it out. it'd be a cool shiny feature, i haven't seen any other company put hi-res cameras built-in their laptops. get on it apple. lol :D

The brand new macbook pros have 720p facetime hd now. but there is no telling whether that camera actually has 720x1280 resolution or has higher resolution like the one on the back of the iphone 4
