Since the dawn of the iPads, there has been this huge push from fanboys (and some general fans) to insist that Apple should take the appropriate steps that would allow the iPad to replace the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. This is all despite Apple being clear that the iPad is designed to have its own place alongside their laptop line and is not meant to be a replacement.

And so, with every new hardware and software release, we get mired in the same 'ol trolling, discussions and complaints of "Where's my MacOS??" and "iPadOS sucks because I can't use it like MacOS!"

Well, I think it's beyond time for people to accept the fact that there is almost zero chance of Apple purposely taking steps that would murder their very own laptop line. And frankly, why would they? Would it honestly be a good business decision for them to tell the public, "Hey, you know those MacBook Airs and Pros that we make? Well, feel free to ignore them! Because over here, we have a machine that runs the same OS, is designed to replace those laptops and oh, by the way, also has a better screen, better speakers, better cameras and much more!"

Look - an iPad is an iPad and a MacBook is a MacBook. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and they each are perfectly valid options. A MacBook will always have an upper hand for certain workflows...and THAT IS OK! And the iPad will also have the upper hand for a lot of media uses and other items...and THAT IS OK, TOO!

It's time to stop expecting Apple to do something that they have no interest in doing and that is against their business interests to do so.

I agree.

A lot of the recent discussion on here has reminded me of the 90s/00s banter from Microsoft fanboys that ”Macs aren’t real computers because it can’t do X or run software Y and Z“, but this time aimed at the iPad by ironically some Mac users.

I think the point was misconceived then and it is misconceived now.

If that was true, Apple would’ve never brought trackpad functionality to the iPad. Every argument I’ve heard about apple never bringing monitor support to the iPad would also apply to Mouse support.

It’s gonna happen, but it has to be done in tandem with a new app display paradigm for large screens. I like multitasking now, but it’s geared for small screens, not 32” monitors.

Some smartphones support mouse functionality, doesn’t mean that they automatically share the same space as a PC.

I think there’s really a lot of pro users who just want some specific power apps to be brought out on the iPad, so they can work on it with the iPad like they work on it on the Mac.

They don’t necessarily want to run full MacOS on their iPad.

Mouse support allows them to sell the extremely profitable magic keyboards...
There is no such thing as an iPad monitor, nor I see how Apple could do something similar to the MK with a monitor...
So that's a huge difference

In another thread I classified reactions to iPad as a laptop replacement in 3 categories, the dreamers (I want MacOS on the iPad), the naïve Apple lovers/sheeps (if it doesn't happen it's because it's best for the consumer, Apple does always what's best for the consumer, and will never hesitate to cannibalize their products if it's good for the consumers) and the realists (Apple puts their interests before those of the consumers, so there will never be MacOS on iPad and any desktop features will come to iPad if they can make profits, like the Magic Keyboards and pencils, and/or not hurt the Macbook line).
I am glad to see you are a realist :)

By the way, for those that think that Apple is leaving money on the tablet, that iPads could outsell Macs, it's not going to happen. Even now Macs outsell iPads and the gaps is only going to widen once the higher end Silicon arrive, and the entry level Macbooks are redesigned. Apple knows well that this transition will increase Macs market share and Macs will be a bigger source of revenues for them. I wouldn't be surprised if in a couple of years Macs make twice as much revenues as iPads. They can take market share from the premium Windows laptops, while the iPad dominate completely the premium tablet market. And Windows tablets are no competition, they are mainly used as laptops.

Why the hell are you openining another new thread when there are like 1000 000 threads on this topic???
Because based on the continuous trolling and ridiculous comments that are continuing to appear on this board, people are clearly not paying attention to those other threads.

Then one has to ask, why would they pay attention to this one? People are people and they’re going to do what they do no matter what. Save your breath and MoveOn.

They are being ignored on purpose by those who are cemented into their false expectation. Another thread isn't going to change that. Even Apple's reality at WWDC didn't change their mind.

I'm happy with the difference between Macs and iPads. I stopped using iPads though because I'd like some better way how to manage files and multitasking. If Apple make it better in the future I'd buy iPad again.

I mean yes, I agree completely with what you're saying, hence why I find value in owning a 2018 iPP alongside my macbook.

However, this doesn't explain why Apple would make the new iPP's so hilariously overpowered for their capabilities. I understand using the M1 chip as it's a lot more cost effective to manufacture just one chip and have it be used across all these products.. but 16GB of RAM? In an iPad for which apps could only utilise 5GB of ram maximum on iPadOS 14 and this already being more than enough for any app.

It just doesn't make sense and if anything seems wasteful.

If Apple wanted “iPads to be iPads” they wouldn’t have already allowed monitor out. Sorry, but the theory that Apple is never going to bring more monitor support to the iPad is ridiculous because it already exists TODAY. Apple has already shown that they have no problem with using an iPad with a monitor. All signs point to future monitor support.

Also, if Apple just wanted the iPad to be a big iPhone, they would’ve never spun off iPadOS. The whole purpose of iPadOS is to take the iPad where the iPhone can never go.

All the same arguments were made in 2015 that Apple would never bring the Mouse to the iPad.

Which theory? Monitor support has been available to apps developers for many years.... It's a totally different thing. There is absolutely no sign for OS level monitor support (extended displays).
And contrary to mouse support, Apple has no financial incentive, since they can't sell you an "iPad monitor".
And iPad hasn't been a big iPhone since the first gen pro (pencil, smart connector for keyboard), if ever.
iPadOS brought some changes but it has been moving extremely slowly because Apple has no incentive to do more, knowing that they won't go into laptop territory so that those that need a Mac today will need it in the future too.
There is no big change to be expected in this direction, at least until they figure out another accessory that can make them money...

The problem is that the hardware on the new iPad Pro is ludicrous overkill given its software limitations. The hardware updates suggested new functionality that would at least slightly close the gap between iPads and Macs for professional use, but iPadOS15 failed to deliver on that promise - much to the (very understandable) disappointment of many.

If Apple wants "an iPad to be an iPad", fine, but then there's no reason to give us an iPad with an M1 chip, a thunderbolt port, 16gb of RAM, etc. If they had even done a couple of small things to improve the device's capabilities as a professional device (like full resolution external monitor support that didn't just mirror the iPad screen), I think people would be a lot happier (and Macs could still remain Macs, capable of many things iPads are not). As it stands, it's not hard to see why a lot of people are feeling disappointed with their expensive, overpowered devices being deliberately held back by the software.

why not? makes perfect sense for Apple not to make a different SoC just for the ipad since the M1 works on it
And a lot of users i bet will keep this M1 ipad for 5-6 years easy thanks to its hardware. And the price still the same (expect the 12.9" but that is due to display)

Reason for M1: it's cheaper than making a A14X (M1 without thunderbolt basically) that just using M1. M1 is nothing special, it's just the usual upgrade to to iPad chip with a TB controller and some minor Mac related differences.
Reason for 16 GB RAM: incentivize high tier storage by bundling them with more RAM (and it has worked apparently).

Thank you for making my point. Yes, people were incentivized to buy the models with more RAM - it worked. And now people are understandably very frustrated that the extra RAM serves no real purpose, given the software limitations. The upgrades to the processor, RAM, and port make no difference in day to day use over a 2018 model iPad Pro, given the current state of iPadOS. People who spent a lot of money on those upgrades have good reason to be disappointed with what Apple gave us last week.

Absolutely, I agree. But to be fair, they were too impatient and did not wait for WWDC as many of us here had suggested...
Personally I decided to go with a refurbished 2018 12.9 last week (as an upgrade from a 2015 one).

If the users bought the ipad pro just in hoping for WWDC apple to bring something that they want/need...then its the users fault 100%
Never buy something on a premise that something will happen/could happen
I bought the ipad pro with 16gb ram because i needed 1T storage..so 16gb ram was a bonus for me
At least i have affinity photos and lumafusion in the background for quite some time
