Sounds like a fun deal. Don't know if it being a prototype really merits any value, as its beta functionality may outweigh the rarity of the item.

Anyway, what did you pay for it?

I really love this new platform; I'd love to get a used one as a 'throwaway'.

Selling price on ebay was $730 (-25% live.com discount) = $547.50+ $40 shipping= $587.50 total.

p.s. just sent the seller a question asking where the laptop came from, we'll have to see if he responds.

If you decide to sell it please pm me as I am selling a day old 1.8/128SSD drive unopened in box,and would trade you,if not I do understand :)

Was going to return it but the Apple store is 2 hours away.

Very interesting, it definitely seems like a pre-production unit. Maybe you could take it in to an Apple Store and have them take a look at it, then you'll know for sure. The only thing that seems odd to me is that it appears to be running 10.4 (Tiger) and the hard drive is only 40GB.

If this truly is a pre-production then congrats, I would def. keep it!

If the OP takes it to the Apple Store, they may keep it and say "too bad, so sad". Or maybe they'll keep it but exchange it for a new one, which would be schweeet too :)

That is a pretty neat find. Nice price too! I did not know the MBAs were going so cheap!

I would say keep it and have a part of Apple history, unless you need the money. It sounds like you can get some pretty nice things in exchange!

I ran the serial number and it is indeed a prototype unit:

M82 PROTO2 ENC 4

Just don't ask where I checked the S/N...

thats really awesome! few questions:
  1. is Tiger installed on it? what is the OS version and build no.? (click on the version number in About This Mac to get the build no.).
  2. are there any things different in the OS compared to Tiger like System Preferences apps or icons?
  3. do multi touch gestures work?

The guy that I bought it from responded to my email and said that he didn't really know anything about the machine, and never took it apart, but the person that he bought it from said "it was a test unit"...I guess that could mean many things.

It is Tiger 10.4.10 (8R4016)

I haven't really played around with it much to determine if there is really anything too different on it. The OS is pretty bare, it doesn't have as many programs on it as a new fresh install would

Multi touch does not appear to work at the moment.

That, my friend, is truly awesome (assuming it is pre-production). I think you could easily get 3-4x the normal retail price (if not more) if you could somehow prove that it is indeed pre-pro.

EDIT:
a few things i noticed:
it has the old style apple keyboard, with no backlighting.
it has a different style power button
it looks as if the unibody production system hadn't been completed yet, as the aluminum over the keyboard is sagging.
no macbook air logo (obviously)

I noticed the same things, weird if this really is a pre-pro in the wild.
