those ipod mockups look soooooooo cool, and very very realistic. But i also think that there needs to be more variation from the iPod and iPhone, and i also think that the chrome/white plastic would look very tacky! i think that the look of the ipod will integrate itself more into the ipod family...

for example, the nano and shuffle use a sort of rounded side, blunt top and bottom look, as if they've been sliced from a long line of metal, i think that the new video will resemble this more..?

I made this back when all the "Apple's gonna make a phone" rumors were floating about.

Of course the iPhone is about 1000 times cooler, but I worked really hard on this! Especially the keyboard.

One can argue that it's not really a future Apple product but I imagine that perhaps eventually the iPod will become more than just a music player, more like an ultraportable Mac. 7" screen and a pullout keyboard! :)

I like the design. I really like the slideout keypad, but the whole Motorola-style menu button kind of threw me off. ;)

Haha, yeah, I was using a Motorola back then, and I couldn't think of a better way to represent "Menu." Seems fine to me! After all, Apple has/had a relationship (albeit a disappointing one) with Moto.

I doubt the 6G iPod will look like the iPhone.

It would confuse me, thats for sure.

It's more like the 8G. I guess it would be a sort of full-fledged mobile Macintosh, with a stripped down version of OSX, but better than the current iPhone's OS (ie. it can read/write word documents etc.) :)

I firmly believe your design is coming soon, Cleanup.
iPhone 2.0 will have a slide out keyboard. The touch keyboard is the biggest source of complaints right now on iPhone that Apple can control. (The slow data network of AT&T is beyond Apple's control).

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with it, I'm just saying that it threw me for a loop.

I think that design might be easier to use upside down with the wheel on the top. I've often thought that about the ipods. My hands are kinda big and so it makes it difficult to hold the ipod and use the click wheel where as if its turned around I hold the whole ipod and my thumb is extended.

Think so?

The touch keyboard is one of the things that I'm most pleasantly surprised with. It works VERY well. I can type around 30 words per minute on the small (vertical orientation) keyboard.

If it's a touch interface....whats the point of the clickwheel? :p

It's not a full-fledged multitouch interface. It's a simple touch interface, which keeps costs down. A multitouch interface is too large and expensive to implement into something like this. This can only register one point of contact and perhaps no gestures, so for scrolling, volume up/down, other miscellaneous navigation options, a Click Wheel may be used primarily or as a substitute. Also, the center button acts as the Home button. :)

I don't believe any of that.

Firstly, the screen will either be all-touch or no-touch. Apple would never release a multi-input device that is too confusing to use, especially something like that.

"keeps cost down" is false, as they would simply remove the touch screen completely if cost was a factor.

The center being a home button is insane. iPods are known for having a button in the middle as a select. Why would they throw every customer in a loop of accidentally pressing home? Where would you suggest be the select button, then?

I think that design might be easier to use upside down with the wheel on the top. I've often thought that about the ipods.

But this sort of design element isn't inherent to iPods. You can see it most everywhere, from phones, to video games to, well, a wide array of things. Even the computer metaphor usually works that way; you don't have your monitor below your keyboard, do you?

It's that way because it's the best way that the device could work (aside from the device being horizontal, in which case they can be on either or both sides). If the button or clickwheel were on the top of the device, your thumb or hand would be partially blocking the screen. It keeps the content front and foremost.

In the case of a touch screen, it could lead to "spurious inputs" as Steve Jobs would say.

Take it easy, bud. It's just a concept...

You're right, it is a bit of a confusing design, the way I outlined it probably wouldn't work that well, but I don't see how Apple could only put in a Click Wheel. Dialling and texting would be a hassle, and as for multitouch/no touch, I'm not sure if they can implement multitouch at low cost.
