I've finished both many times and played them to death and i've realised; they are exactly the same game just in different settings!

F3: Vault 101
Ob: Sewers

F3: Rivet City
Ob: Imperial City (I think its called that)

F3: Enclave
Ob: Mythic Dawn

I also noticed that in Fallout 3 in the Lamplight Caverns that they look exactly the same as a lot of the caves in Oblivion.
You get what I mean yeah?

Does anybody else feel let down or dissapointed?

Not that similar;

Ob: Worked ok
F3: Keyboard lockup after 5 mins

Ob: Worked on dual core
F3: Crashed unless affinity set to one core

Ob: Still in drawer
F3: On ebay and replaced with Mass Effect

Thats because there is about 2 years between each games release.
Obviously Fallout 3 is going to be a lot more demanding than Oblivion.
Although I did have a lot of trouble installing Fallout 3 and none at all with Oblivion.
Because the games are so similar and so much time was put into Oblivion and not as much was put into Fallout 3 I think Bethesda just couldn't be arsed to go all out on Fallout 3 so they just copied alot of Oblivion.
Although personally I find Oblivion the better game, much better.

I don't understand why you've posted this twice. So to copy/paste -

Does anybody else feel let down or dissapointed?v

Lol no. Oblivion was a buggy mess, Fallout 3 is much more refined (it's newer, go figure!). But I'm looking at this from more an engine PoV since I didn't bother with much of Oblivion past the 3 hour mark. Found the setting of Fallout 3 to be much more interesting.

I fell in love with Oblivion (PC). It's so outstanding, but admittedly not perfect. Fallout 3 is ok, but I'm not falling in love and am on the fence with it thinking about selling. The post armaggedon environment is not all the compelling at least not the area surrounding the vault. I don't know, I may sell it on ebay.

There may be some basic similarities between the two games but they are worlds apart. To summarize, I am disappointed in F3. For perspective, you may have identified me as a fantasy role playing fan.

Is it me, or is this thread similar to this thread? :)

I found Oblivion very stiff, so never played it past the demo, but if and when I get back to Fallout 3, I reached a point in it, where it started to become enjoyable.

Same thread, different authors. ;)

Same account holder! ;)

and as I said in the other thread

Well they are similar games, using similar game mechanics and of course they share similar experience.

But so what??

It's like taking two great rollercoasters, two great works of art by the same artist, two pieces of beautiful juicy fruit... etc.....

As long as the final result is a quality experience then what you complaining about ?

I also never found Oblivion to be a buggy mess. I enjoyed the game immensely, just as much as Fallout 3. However I thought the ending of Oblivion was far better than Fallout 3's endings.

Fallout 3 = Oblivion + guns

Fallout 3 = better

Just get it on PS3 or Xbox to enjoy it more

NO!! If you have a choice get the 360 or PC version. I had the PS3 version and it is an ugly non-antialiased mess in comparison to the 360 and PC versions. It's fine if you only have a PS3 to play it on, but like I say if you do have the choice then purchase it on another format.

AntiAliasing really does makes a considerable difference (more so than any other title I've played side by side / format to format) to a title that's about atmosphere and desolate wastelands and ruined cities. And it does improve the overall user experience.

Now if were talking Oblivion then the PS3 is the better of the consoles ;)

Eh, why hide the Xbox text? As MRU pointed out it doesn't have AA issues and will get DLC.

But it's not the PS3's fault. Just devs gimping their games for it, take Orange Box and GTAIV.

Fallout 3 is grand.

I'm an avid fan of Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout: Tactics. Even though there were some distinct changes in Fallout 3 I feel that the game is enjoyable. Bethesda in the recent patch (1.1.0.35) cleared up any of the technical issues I was having. I find the world immersive and very much Fallout. There are a some things that detract from the perfection of the game that are just oddities of the Havok engine such as NPCs walking into each other or aimlessly against walls, which does remind me of Oblivion. The story and mechanics do hold and easily overcome the drawbacks.

I loved Fallout 3, it was an amazing game. I decided to get oblivion after playing Fallout 3. I found it not to be as good graphics wise (obviously as it is like 3 years old now) but it was a great game once you got into it. It felt familiar as i had already played fallout 3, and they are similar games. I like oblivion more for the amount of replay, and i like fallout 3 more for the setting and the VATS system. They are equal in my opinion

The similarities are striking - even featuring much of the same voice talent.

After playing Oblivion, you'd recognise when a conversation is leading to a new quest/task as the build-up is similar.

The only "problem" with Oblivion - apart from the frame rate - was you could get the invisibility spell early on so the game became very easy. You could sneak in anywhere, and if you were losing a fight, just turn invisible and run and hide. I've probably spent more time in that game than any other and (with Shivering Isles just started) I've lots more to go.

I've only scratched the surface on Fallout 3 and am loving it. Though, I'm wary of finishing the main quest before I've a chance to explore everywhere.

Disappointing you finish levelling up so early in Fallout 3 though, in Oblivion I'm still going strong.

Level cap to go to 30 with DLC.

Capped at 20 for now, but when the new downloadable content which extends the storyline it will be increased to 30. Also the game will not end with the main storyline completion. The downloadable content will be out after Operation Anchorage under the name Broken Steel.

I don't see how you're computer not working has to do with the game not being any good. Play it on PS3 or Xbox 360 your computer can obviously not handle the games.

I loved Oblivion and played it to death.

I played Fallout 3 for about 8 hours and will never play it again.

I wanted to like it so much, as one of my favorite games of all time is Fallout 2, but IMHO Fallout 3 just blows. It's not funny, its *barely* strategic, there's no world map with no random encounters and no car. A two-d isometric view game with little more than sprites (Fallout 2) seemed to inject more life into its characters than does Fallout 3. Fallout 2 was insanely fun, yet I had to force myself to play past hour 1 of Fallout 3. In short, I think its predecessor does just about everything better than it.

Oblivion had swords and magic and fantastical quests and monsters and sweet colors and views, not to mention sweet abilities for your character to learn. Fallout 3 seemed to be all the same shade of turd, in graphics (albiet a very defined and realistic looking turd) and gameplay.

Oh and I played on the 360, for whatever it's worth.

Random Encounters

...It's not funny, its *barely* strategic, there's no world map with no random encounters and no car....

There are random encounters, they simply happen in real time. I didn't think they were there until I encountered one. I won't spoil content here, but it was rather fantastic. Also there are strategic ways to go about combat. With objects that can be destroyed, that chain other events. Evergreen Mills contains a possibility like that. I do understand if you don't like the feel of a game don't play it, but random encounters and other ways to go through situations are present.

I don't get what you mean...There is a world map!
You can even access it on your PIPBOY under data and then "World Map".

Can't wait for that. I was hoping the F3 map would be bigger and a little more varied from the get go, but I cant wait to go exploring round a snow wasteland.

Interesting, thanks! I'd been told elsewhere that once you completed the main quest the game would end, which I was disappointed with; hence I've been wandering and playing the side-quests as much as possible.

I'm playing on a PS3 (my 360 was MIA - red ringing) so I'm not sure if we're getting the DLC. Still, a lot less fun going on the rampage across the wasteland with no reward (apart from the odd finger... )

^ Well until the third expansion is released the game WILL end after the main quest.

This leaves us who have played to the end with a dilemma. My last save is only say 30 seconds from the end of the game, its gonna be strange and very disjointed to suddenly load it up again and then middle quest leave it at the pinnacle and head out on these new 'side quests'.....

Really breaks the game in a way.

I have been playing it on Xbox 360 and love it. I finished the main quest by mistake and just went back to a prior saved game and am now doing all the side quest. I have over 80 hours invested into this game. What drives me crazy is the voice talent. I get so tired of hearing the same voices over and over. The first several hours of the game are very dull, one you get past that its a lot of fun. Anyone know when the DLC will start coming our way?

I'm just being a scrooge because I loved Fallout 2...I was definitely too harsh on F3. And I'm glad to hear there are random encounters, just in real time.

I guess I hate the real time aspect of it, and I think the aiming system is silly and just a way to try and appease people who loved F2.

If I am coming off as scroogealishious here that's fine. I deplore the dearth of turn-based strategy games on the 360! Can't find a single good one. Where are my xcoms? Fallout 2s? FFTacics? I already have Halo if I want to strategically shoot the explosive box as the badguy walks buy in real time.

All in all, I just have other games to play.

/end rant

EDIT: Maybe in a year or so, when I have cooled down about it not being what I wanted it to be, I will find it is a good game.

After throwing the towel in on FO3, I'm back playing Oblivion. It is an amazingly beautiful RPG, not perfect, but a wonderful change of pace as compared to the desolation of a post Armageddon world. Yes, it's just my opinion. :D
