Oblivion had swords and magic and fantastical quests and monsters and sweet colors and views, ...

... like maybe only, hm, 1000 other fantasy games that come out each month? :D

I like Fallout 3 very much, almost more than 1 & 2. Personally I have never been a "turn based" fan, but I still liked Fallout 1 & 2 because of the cool setting.

The only thing that's maybe even more beat to death than fantasy (rpg) games are world war 2 shooters. :)

F3 is superior in just about every respect.

Character creation is pretty weak in FO3 compared to Oblivion. And the opening sequence is too cutscene heavy. And fighting in both can be cheesy since lunging by enemies oftentimes leaps past an attack. (I had a deathclaw "jump" a bottlecap mine right in front of me as it lunged at me, and took nearly no damage) I hate swinging missing and having to turn in endless circles to throw a melee attack.

Other than that FO3 is far superior, especially since all the useless crap you pick up is actually potentially useful, unlike Obliv.

I thought it was because Deathclaws are so darn tough, but the prima guide says that:
Bottlecap mines: 500 DMG (Max demolition skill)
Deathclaws: 500 HP

So, i guess thats kind of a stupid system.

1. there's a reason not many realistic post apocalyptic games come out: its ugly and hard to make interesting. grats to F3 for kind of pulling it off.

2. and all those games are anywhere near oblivion in scope and graphical design...right.

I prefer Oblivion over Fallout3 hands-down.. largely due to the combat system.
I like the atmosphere in F3 (including the firearms), but with such limited ammo available it forces the player to become proficient in melee combat. Oblivion, ranged combat was a real option. Arrows were plentiful, and when those ran out there was always magic to fall back on.
In F3, you shoot until you run out of bullets (which doesn't take long) and are then stuck trying to conquer the world with a baseball bat (while many of your opponents have assault rifles)
That said, F3's a great game. I just don't think it's nearly as flexible and enjoyable as Oblivion.

yes maybe in the very beginning of the game that is true, but just follow the main quest and soon you will have more 5.56 than you know what to do with.

I love this game, I usaully don't plaY these type of games but I gave it a chance and wasn't disappointed.
