Hello everyone!

I know generally people only make a fuss when there are problems, but I just wanted to say:

The LED display on the MBP is simply fantastic.

I've got it hooked up to a Professional Viewsonic 20" LCD and it's just putting it to shame. The MBP is replacing a 15" Powerbook (last revision) and the difference between the two laptops is massive. I was always trying to turn the brightness up on the PB, now I actually run the MBP on less than full brightness as it is THAT bright.

Well done Apple.

:apple: :D

did you get a matte or glossy?

congrats on the purchase!

seeing posts like this makes me wanna jump out there and get a SR MBP. but at the same time i'm telling myself that i should perhaps wait a little since i got my laptop in nov '06.

i'm curious to know if the MBPs are glossy or matte as well.

did you get a matte or glossy?

I picked up a matte as I do a lot of Photography. It looks a lot smoother than the Powerbook screen did (less grainy, kinda creamy). The glossy just had way too many reflections for me - anything black and you see yourself in it!

My screen is also matte. I talked to the guys at my local Apple store and they said they don't even carry any glossy screens for the MBP and that I would have to either order online or special order.

I can't speak for any other apple stores.

The Apple Store in the Bullring at Birmingham (UK) had both the matte and glossy 15" and the 17"s on display. The 17" was visibly darker than the 15" LED screens. Admittedly, the lighting in the store wasn't great for showing off the glossy screens - it had far too many overhead strips that caused reflections.

I'm just waiting until they update the cinema displays to LED panels now...

Thanks for the positive thread Imbalance! :)

The "negative" threads tend to outweigh the "positive" threads and it's understandable: When something doesn't work people get angry, but when it does people are indifferent and thus [normally] don't post.

Glad to hear you like your new display, I have waited since October for this and ordered a 15" glossy yesterday online. When I played around with it at the Apple Store the other day it was enough to get me to buy, something the old display could not convince me to do.

:)

what sort of photography do you do? is the mbp 15" screen ok for photos then? I'm looking for decent mobile solution for my photography at the mo...

I'm a photography enthusiast,... not professional. I tend to take landscapes, architecture, travel & some very limited portrait stuff. I'm currently shooting with a D80. Lightroom flies on the new MBP. The display seems good for photos so far, although I've yet to get any prints back that I've processed using it.

Were you not tempted to get the hi rez 17" screen for photography? I'm currently deciding between the two and want to use it for photgraphy.

yeah, this is where I'm at. I use LR too and hope to chuck it on a mac and have a play. its the deliberation between hi-res 17 or 15 and a separate monitor sitting at home, since the LED screens are meant to be nice...not so sure about the reports of them being yellow/flickering?!
D80's a good camera. got any of your images you care to share? I've slowly started making in-roads into selling and its starting to pick up...:D just after something I can use to work on images when away from home now

I have to agree with the OP. I have the matte screen on my new MBP SR, and there's simply no comparison to my old Powerbook G4. :)

Excellent! :) I ordered the matte last week as well to replace my current PowerBook G4 (2nd last revision). It will only take a while due to the 7200rpm BTO option

I am doing a bit of photography as well (EOS 400D); why did you choose for Lightroom instead of Aperture?

it strikes me as rather poor planning on apple's part for failing to stock more 7200 drives when I'm sure they knew it would be popular... silly that.

Does everyone think that the new MacBook pro's have a significantly better and brighter screen than the previous C2D's?

i think thats the general feeling, yes it is.
as long as it hasn't good a yellow tint which is apparently emerging as a problem, as well as the flickering(?) that occurs.

Well I was thinking about getting one as I am a "screen man" love the brighter screens but wondering about some of the problems emerging that you mentioned. Maybe better to wait and see.

As a photographer, I'm really looking forward to recieving my 17'' Hi Rez. Hopefully this screen will be as good as I'm hoping :) . I went for the 17'' because I feel like I need the real estate

They had plenty of glossy MBP SR's at the new Austin Domain store. Agreed
lots of reflections with all the overhead lights. But in a home
situation, I kind of prefer the glossy. Still debating that old question.

Can I hold out until October and leopard? Its up to my OLD ibook 933.
If it continues to live I will wait.

I am doing a bit of photography as well (EOS 400D); why did you choose for Lightroom instead of Aperture?

Lightroom was semi-usable on my Powerbook 15" 1.67Ghz, Aperture just wasn't. And when I say semi-usable, I found myself planning a photo import: I'd set it up, start it importing the RAW files and then go off and make dinner or something. It wasn't snappy for editing either, but given all of this... it was still miles faster than Aperture.

I also prefer the general UI layout in Lightroom. It works well for me.

Regarding the 17" Display
After owning a 1440x960 15.1" Powerbook (the only revision with that slightly higher res) the smaller PPI annoyed me. The 17" with the high res display would be even worse. Also, the 15" LED displays seemed a lot brighter to me in the shop. The only time I thought otherwise I was actually looking at a previous revision (2.33Ghz MBP).

Yep I've had mine a few days now and the matte screen is superb. Easily the best laptop screen I've had.
