I find it hard to believe that some screens suffer from the yellowish tint and others don't unless Apple is using different suppliers for the current batch! Either some ppl just dont see it or it is not as pronounced on glossy screens. Mine (matt screen) has it, its not pleasant but I guess I can live with it!

This AI article seems to indicate that it's one supplier, but it's not clear whether it's for the planned 13-inch version.

can be issue of european models with stricter certificates? and cheaper USA models because these guys are from europe and don't have problems and other people here in USA have this issue? That will piss me a lot if that's true.

I'm posting from one at the Apple Store Regent St right now and yes it is indeed gorgeous. So nice and bright that it's confusing me! I came in ready to purchase the 17" high-res version. That one's great though the fonts look tiny... I'm now being drawn to this one's screen.

Aaarrrgh so confused right now!!!

Do you think its better than the 17" screen?

It's a tough call.

I love the extra resolution of the 17" high-definition display and everything does look nice and clear and crisp, though the fonts are a little small. I know you can increase/decrease font sizes easily within applications but menu items etc and the overall [relative] size of what you're viewing remains the same.

The 15" on the other hand did seem a tad brighter, though it was hard to accurately judge because they line the 15" up on one side of the table and the 17" on the opposite side, so you can't do a side-by-side comparison. I was looking at the antiglare one, which has a very nice finish. I don't know if it was just because it was brand new and so free of fingerprints etc but the 15" had a lovely subtle sheen about it. "Sheen" perhaps isn't the right term; I'm not entirely sure how to describe it! Very bright, crisp display and not the same kind of matte (as in dull matte) as my ageing PowerBook.

I was at the store last week just before they got the new models in and remember being a little underwhelmed by the previous 15" matte display and thinking the glossy one looked richer. Tonight I decided the glossy just looks "cheap" in comparison. The matte LED display is truly lovely. To answer the question... yes I think the finish and the brightness are better on the 15" than the 17". It's just the resolution that's keeping me a little undecided!

I have to say I didn't notice any yellowing/uneven lighting/other issues on any of the models I looked at.

I was just about to buy the 15" when I remembered I could get a 2-year warranty by buying it from John Lewis instead! So no purchase made just yet...

Thanks very much for the information. I love the look of the new screens on the 15's but my 17" is only 5 months old and the screen is very nice. Hard to compare them in the store but mine still seems to hold its own,. Good luck with your purchase.

Coming from the last MBP CD2 2.33...

and I am finding the new LED display lacking. NOt only with the yellow coloring at the bottom (slight but its there, darker and yellowish) and the half dark half light strip at the top (finder bar) but its NOT as bright as my last MBP CD2 2.33 nor as sharp.

The machine itself is killer - fast, and have had no problems with anything. Gained a little speed over the 2.33 and the opp to ad 4GB of ram, which I will be doing.

BUT this display is NOT what its cracked up to be. IF you are coming from an old powerbook, then YES this display is MUCH brighter. If you are coming from an old crappy windows machine, then YES this display is much nicer. If you are coming from the last MBP line then no, it is not better.

Im disappointed in it and so far every one I have seen has the yellow tinge at the bottom and the odd half bright/half darker strip at the top.

Im sure in the next revision in 5-6 months it will be perfect.

^Damn shame about that yellowing. I've been reading some of the posts this evening and have seen it on the pics posted but I really didn't notice anything at the store. Perhaps there are just a couple of dodgy batches out there and the problem isn't *that* widespread... remember people tend to post about the negatives not the positives.

Yeah coming from a 2-year old 12" PowerBook they all look super bright to me.

How is the color? I've heard that it has a slight green tint, and even calibrating doesn't help--I've got a Pantone Huey Pro and I plan to calibrate the screen with it... Any comments on the color accuracy?

dcv -

Did you happen to notice that the 15" LEDs were a bit grainier when compared to the 17" High-Res? The Apple Store I went to in LA had them side by side so I was able to watch a 1080p Fantastic Four trailer on both and I noticed a bit more artifacts in the 15" screen whereas the 17" was completely clean.

I didn't notice that as much when doing desktop apps. iTunes photos looked stunning on both, with the brightness of the LEDs really enhancing the colors on the sample photos.

I guess when you get down to it, we're all putting ourselves through ridiculous agony over two options that are both fantastic. I just prefer to have a desktop that I can carry around with me. To me, the 15" is the best ultra-portable on the market. I know some people would laugh at my definition of "ultra-portable" but when you're talking 1" thick and 5 lbs, that's pretty damn portable and it's about as small a screen as I would want to go without losing some productivity/functionality.

The 17" just happens to be a full-fledged desktop powerhouse that you can drop in your backpack and take anywhere. I still take notes in class by hand and sleep or read on planes so the size of the 17" won't really phase me there.

hi. i'm posting from vienna/austria/europe. i just got my mbp 2.4 three days ago and i'm really happy with it. there is no yellowish tint on my displays. the quality just blows my professional viewsonic 19' monitor's away. really.

cheerio!

Wow! Thanks very much for the information. I really wanted to hear from people who had come from the previous generation 2.33 model (especially the 17") but 15" too. I am going to wait for the next update,

Lol, people keep anxiously bringing up the point that "remember people tend to post about the negatives not the positives." I must have read that statement in a dozen posts today. The fact that people keep nervously throwing around comments like that is making me alot more nervous than the complaints themselves...:(

Drawn just like a moth to the light on the porch at night. :) I was drawn when I first saw it as well. I am so happy I went with the 15 now.
