I have found the answer to winterboard slowing down the iphone.

Add the, Http://david.ashman.com/apt/ repository to Cydia.

Then add the winterboard settings from this repository. It moves the winterboard settings into the system settings app. Within the new winterboard settings select the springboard only slider and hit the home button and the phone will respring and then I rebooted just for anality. The apps are now fast initializing and shutting down!

I have tested this and amazingly enough, it actually does work! WinterBoard is a bit optimized by using WinterBoard settings, essentially, i am guessing, through "stripping down" some of WinterBoard's theming functions.

If you're like me and you only care about theming your SpringBoard and LockScreen, this is for you. It does not affect those (or widgets or HTML backgrounds). I believe if you theme apps and more specific system files then they might not work...however, you can always compensate by replacing those files individually manually through SCP...just make sure you back up everything you manually replace instead of using WinterBoard.

Using SBSettings + Winterboard + LockScreen Info + StatusNotifier as my only MobileSubstrate-based extensions, I was hovering around 36-38 MB free at all times; with WinterBoard Settings installed and the "SpringBoard Only" option checked, I get around 48-56 MB free now...an excellent gain of 12-18 MB of free memory, and all without breaking any of my WinterBoard themes I am currently using!

Highly recommended.

interesting.

this is on a 3G, i'm assuming?

i'll have to check it out... find out what exactly it does, in more detail.

It gives back some free memory and speeds up applications but you can not apply themes inside applications (like mobileme ui, matte ui etc), if enabled.
Not really a new thing, i believe intelliscreen had some kind of option like that.

Thanks!

I just installed this and it does seem to work well. Very well in fact.

I'm one of those people who just uses winterboard to change the dock and the springboard (black background) to something else. I don't do much else and don't really care to.

Anyway, when 3.0 came out, winterboard just slowed things down too much. This was most evident when launching apps and even more so when leaving apps.

I tried winterboard on two occasions since 3.0 and removed it later both times due to sluggishness.

This little fix seems to give it the speed to make it run like it did on previous OS versions.

Thanks for the tip!

Doubtful Sound. This just modifies Winterboard I think and doesn't actually change the program like needs to be done.

After using this fix for a couple of hours I'm finding things aren't as fast as I'd like them to be. Back to no winterboard for now...

I completely uninstalled winterboard on my phone yesterday b/c i felt it was making the phone slower. My friend has an iPhone as well and I wanted to see if I was crazy or not. He has winterboard on his and I didn't have it on mine. We both opened up the SMS app at the same time...and HIS opened slightly faster. And I had nothing else running on my phone in the background to slow it down. BTW...Jailbreaking iPhone FTMFW!

this work on the 3gs?

Works fine on my 3Gs. There is a slight improvement in speed and memory usage using Winterboard Settings but from what I can gather not as obvious an improvement as apparently experienced by others with 2G or 3G iPhones.

This may of course be down to the way I'm using my iPhone. I'm not really clear about what the "Springboard Only" option limits but I have it set to "On" and so far I've noticed no problems. JFYI, I'm running:

Backgrounder (backgrounding Skype), Insomnia, LockScreen Clock Hide, SBSettings + SBsettingsToggles, UltraSn0w, 20 Second Lock Screen, Five Icon Dock, Reflective Dock and SSH. Winterboard: Gruppled LockInfo, user wallpaper, transparent dock, along with a few other visual enhancements, for example a replacement slider in my own theme folder and some custom icons.

There has been an update to this in the past 8 hours. So, if you installed before 11:30p.m. est, go get your update.

Seems to be working well here. I do think I'm noticing a bit of a battery drain, so I'll be watching this update closely.

It's still winterboard settings. I added it through icy, as I couldnt get the repo to load in cydia.

However I seem to be having a few issues after install: long boot times, battery wont charge to 100%, so I'm watching it closely.

What are we talking about the they say"add the winterboard settings from this repository"?

Damn, you're getting less than 50MB...

In case anyone is interested in upgrading to the 3GS I'm pushing 150MB with winterboard sporting the iNav theme.

I also installed winterboard settings and had improvements. Excellent find!!!

As stated, add the source to Cydia, then install Winterboard settings, which moves the Winterboard app from an icon to your settings menu.

As info, I'm using Winterboard settings, and using themes on apps, dialer, calculator, etc (more than springboard stuff) and I have over 50MB of memory free on a 16GB 3G running 3.0.

Question, should I install just Winterboard settings or also Winterboard Lite?
Thanks.

Edit: I just installed Winterboard settings and I'm getting just 37mb memory free (16GB 3G running 3.0) and also the Mail.app just won't close, could that be becuase I have push turne on? How can I get your 50MB free :)?
I have:
Enable > ON
SpringBoard Only > ON
Hide App Icon > ON
Logs > OFF

Is that correct?

Update: I turned OFF Hide App Icon and now I'm getting 49MB free memory :D (though I had to free memory with SBSettings twice)

The amount of memory depends on what all you are running with Winterboard.

I am running a springboard theme and a lockscreen theme.

Most of my other mods I have placed directly into iPhone system files and replaced the stock pngs and files. In other words, I am not running a dozen themes off Winterboard.

Can you replace the Springboard background with SSH or SFTP? I don't like using Winterboard because I can replace most icons myself if I want to change them, but doing the background would be nice.

The theme backgrounds can be changed by SSH like you would with an icon. Just rename the original and rename the new .png to whatever the original background was. Respring/reboot for the changes to apply.
