Oh you mean Android M, not "MM". I think I know what you mean, with a major version not being considered an update, however in the eyes of the carriers, phone manufactures, and customers, it's called and considered an update for their phone. It's just a major update instead of a minor update.

Presumably, Marshmallow, the current Android iteration

It was the double MM that confused me, as marshmallow is one word and abbreviated as Android M
